I know the NA public beta has not started yet, but does anyone know how to get in it, or if it is too late to sign up already?
You can send me an email if you know. Or just put it on this thread.

Osaka, I don't think we're talking about the same beta. The one that works on invite is about connevtivity and is exactly like an importer's material, but it's not the one mentioned on the site (since this would refer to a CLOSED Beta).
The Public Beta has not started yet and we don't know when it will start indeed, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled and signing up at the moment it comes up. They would make a selection amongst applicants (need to be a North American resident and apply, basic requirements) afterwards.

ok... well, that's probably just the connectivity test... but there's another thread devoted to that, so whatever.

people though that the closed beta was just a connectivity test, but what happened? closed beta testers ended up getting entire japanese ps2s, hdds, and import versions of ffxi! Square-enix is not just gonna send a simple program that isnt ffxi for the beta. It's going to be the game, how often have you seen betas where it was just something that tested the connectivity? you cant log into the japanese servers unless you have the game! hello?! Beta means they get peoples reaction on the connection and how well it works, players wouldnt learn anything otherwise.
Terikan

well, you basically made the argument for me.
And as I'm sure you are aware, this isn't comparable to other betas because the actual game mechanics have already been tested and are already released. A true beta would have no purpose whatsoever. The game is out.

Just because the game is out in Japan doesn't mean that it's perfect. In translating and doing whatever they do to localize the game for North American release, new bugs and translation errors can surface in Playonline and Final Fantasy XI. Why else would they be doing a public beta?
My Assumption is... this public beta will be in English
they will be testing the translation, looking for typos ect
I don't know about that. Square Enix has some pretty good translators. I mean, has Square EVER needed to ask for our opinion on their translations before? Final Fantasy IX and X both had fantastic translations and I can only guess they'd get the same guy to do it again (I can't remember his name).
Just because it's an online game doesn't mean anything is different from previous games. They don't need our opinion on the translation, trust me.
However, IF the Public beta isn't the same thing as the closed beta, I would say the public beta would be for testing the new servers dedicated for North American use, and for possible bugs created from the translation (It's not like all the code can remain intact when translating from one language to another).
That's what I think.

One Word: Aeris.
Faylore
04-04-2003, 07:51 AM
What you mean Aeris? What u talking about Luc, sorry don't understand.
Pai Pai Master
04-04-2003, 08:57 AM
"Aeris", the name of the flower girl in Final Fantasy VII, is actually named "Aerith". That was one of Square's few, but major translation errors. I think VIII was the first in the series to have a near-flawless translation.
Fox Excalibur
04-04-2003, 09:47 AM
are you kidding FFVIII had horrible translations like this...
Squall: In the japanese version his name was the word for "wife beater"
Rinoa: here her name was "co dependant"
Sypher: was named "jealouse obsessive psychopath" another translation of his name is "penis envy"
SeeD was called "cult"
gunblades were "hah can you believe what these americans will buy?"
so you can see the gross misuse of just these few tranlastion errors amoung the many more.

Aeriswas a fitting name in my opinion...I beleive she was the Greek or Roman or Celtic or something goddess of discord, and hot damn, she really messed things up for us CloudxTifa fans. Acutally, I'm a CloudxCid fan >_>; >_>; >_>; >_>; And a TifaxYuffie fan.
But I went of topic.
The game was supposed to be ready to go when it first came out in Japan, we were just waiting for the HDD, so I have absolutely no idea what this beta is about. Because it shouldn't take 2 and a half years to translate item names and NPC babble.

do u people listen to what everyone else is saying? its not just translating the text they've been working so hard on for the past year, it's so much more. It takes a lot longer to localize an MMORPG than it does a traditional RPG. Get used to it, we'll be waiting at least 4-5 months more until we actually get the game.
Off topic: Fox, what the heck are you talking about? Square doesn't mess with the characters' names when they translate. It was Squall in the Japanese version, it's Squall in the English version.

Hmmm well if everything goes the way i think it will, the beta will be out around summertime, and the retail will be released around fall. now if Sony could quit draggin their butts with the HDD being released....

do you seriously think it will take months? i dont think so... heres why.
1) the hdd is "supposedly" out already, or how else do the closed beta testers play? i could be missing something but hey :)

Haha do you really think Sony is just sitting there and doing nothing or in your words "draggin their butts"? How would you like to them to just release it now? Possibly(<--Key word) with bugs/glitches still in it now that wouldn't be too fun would it. So why dont you just be patient and wait till Sony is finished with it and they send it and you will be one happy FFXI gamer just like the rest of us.
And yes the HDD may already be out we just dont know it or *are* missing something but we are still going off topic from Aeris to HDD this is about the Public Beta....

Don't you see? Without Aeris, Squall couldn't beat his wife and sell the pictures to Sony so they'd release the HDD. Once the HDD is released, seven public betas all featuring Aeris and Squall's beat up wife Rinoa handing out HDDs to citizens to Vana'Diel.
^_^ Then the Beta test will start. ^_^

lmao, how nice to turn off-topicness into a joke like this
The HDD isn't out yet in North America. The Closed Beta testers use Japanese material (including Broadband unit, which incorporates the HDD/Network Adapter).
In the Public Beta they will use the North American version (no point in testing the Japanese version's features as they already work good there) and this means using HDD from North America as well.

I think I heard somewhere that FFXI release for the NA version was sometime in the fall, somewhere around October. So the beta for the NA version will most likely be durring the spring or the summer. Only thing that seems logical, I think someone already pointed this out. Ughh as for the HDD it is going to be released April 17th which is comming up pretty fast. If I'm not mistaken probably durring around spring break for some of us. Hopefully the beta will be open around then. Becuse either way I know that I'am going to be glued infront of the computer and tv screen playing a video game, and forget everything I learned in school. ^-^

for those of you who have never played a mmorpg
'public' beta means they recruit testers from the general public. either via a closed application process that will probably NOT be widely advertised. OR they could pull your name out of a hat from their database of KNOWN PS2 owners whom fit the criteria (ie. already have the BB connection gear for their PS2)
OPEN beta is where they make the client available for any tom dick and sally to download and test on their own
due to the nature of this game there will NEVER be an OPEN beta for the PS2 version and quite likely there wont be one for the PC version either.
since the game has ALREADY been tested in japan and has been running for months, their beta testing will probably be ONLY translations and server/connectivity side issues. in which case the beta period will be relatively short and requiring a smaller tester base (it is likely that other than connectivity testing most of the testing will be done in house)
so what does all that mean
if you havent already been invited to be a tester .... then in all likelyhood you never will be
so like ... get over it and dont ask pls , cause whether or not you know when the beta starts it is completely irrelevant to you =)

woah april 17 for the hdd?!?!! is that a postivie conformation?!
ooo i hope so as for beta im dissapointed they wont do an open beta, but i guess in a sense that is a mixed blessing, the shorter playerbase they need the shorter testing period.

I saw the date for the HDD somewhere me forgot, but not sure if that is the actual release date. And as for the public beta I don't think they are gonna announce it for everyone to know. I think they just picked random people that they know already have the network adaptor for online play. So if didn't get invite chances are slim.

yeah they have those, and they have to send them back when the test is over :p
I dont think Square would want to send even more out to people, I think they more then likely will do a PS2 beta, for the american version tests, i dont know how though, it may be after the HDD release.
The japanese beta testers needed thier OWN HDDs to beta test when it was first being done.
I dont see them inviting alot of us to do the PC/PS2 betas, they just dont really need alot of people, but i am thinking the next phase of the beta may let more in, just not that many.

ok thanks i just hurt my eyes reading the post from Raze about it...
i still can't believe that each tester gets that much (even though they are supposed to return it.......-- surely u can't expect 100% of pple to do so... an extra jap ps2 is something u know?
...and they even forgot to say where and when to return it???
that just sounds stupid... i wish i'm one of those.... :dead: )
sorry pple for OT.... please carry on with the original topic:p ;)  :handsdown :handsdown :handsdown

Actually April 17th is the release of the Expansion not the HDD, you must've read it wrong or something.

no, no one knows the HDD date. Sony will reveal all we need to know at E3. let's leave it at that, and keep this on the subject of the NA Beta Test.
