Does anyone play FFXI on a dialup connection and if so how does the game run. Can FFXI even run on a dialup connection?

Actually, it was made for dialup. My understanding is that actual game play bandwidth is limited to dialup speeds even for broadband players, making broadband only useful during version updates.

As it is, when I first started playing we actually had two computers and a PS2 on a single dialup connection, and two FFXI accounts would run just fine (though certainly a little laggy in a bad way if both players were in Jeuno). Still, it was playable.

PS2 player I take it? The PC version is only 20 or 30 USD.

Cant afford that either. Sucks pretty bad. I wish i could download it but that's not fair to Se who spends so much time working on it.

Actually, I ordered my copy for PC Friday and got it for like € 12, which is about 16 USD. Look for Amazon.co.uk or .com, maybe you'll be in luck. Also, keep in mind that if you're not bothered by it, used copies are much much cheaper.

Amazon has both the PS2 HDD version and the PS2 CoP expansion, if you want to get the PS2 version, and the Vana'diel Collection is pretty cheap for the PC. However, if you can't even get that, you really have to find a better way to earn money than you're getting now...

That's the one I have, I believe. Vana'Diel pack thingeymabob. I don't remember it's name but it has all expansions included (except for the new one, of course).

Yep. Super gay u.s. economic system. My mom gets SSI and if i get a job they take that and i have to support her. I was like WTF. I am 17 in school and no part time job anywhere can support one person let alone two.

I need some under the table jobs like mowing a lawn or something. If i could get my novel Published i would be fine but until then i have to scrap up anything i can.

A novel? Really? Wow... What's it about?

And as for jobs, try to keep it legal. Since you're 17, I doubt you'll be sent to juvi (spell check), but trailed as an adult. And with you behind bars, there'll be nobody to support your mom. And sorry for sounding like her too, I couldn't help myself.:o:P

I have a hard time explaining it so go to my blog (http://blog.myspace.com/adam_atlantian) and read the first four chapters. As for my mom she suggested a few thiigs fro me to do so hopefully by the end of Feb. i'll be in Vana'diel becoming a super cool Warrior/Paladin. Or a summoner i'm not sure yet.

Tell me if you like my novel. It's fantasy. You'll probably have to scroll down to Ch. 1.

The biggest problem you will have on dial-up is the PATCH!
No joke, you have to keep your dial-up going non-stop for at least 20 hours to
get an orriginal version patched. Its less horrible for the gold box version
or a computer that already has the expansion installed.

My advice in either case is to take your computer to a high speed connection for the first big patch. But as for playing over dial-up, it works just fine. I had two different accounts going at once over a 26k dial-up connection with little to no lag. The patch is the only thing that you'll be hurting on.

Your going want to get the expansion, though, to make this not quite as horrible.

I play FFXI on my labtop with a dialup modem and it works just fine... It does lag a ton in Jueno and when a bunch of parties are fighting side by side... Too much action and I lag out... lol... Besides that you can play with a dial-up modem. PEACE

Patches suck. Gold version the download isn't that long, my sister acutally bought that. I bought this game early last year but just started playing this year since I got a pc that can actually run it. It took around 30hrs online to get it fully installed, my sis had dsl and it was like 2hrs for install. I tried to get a high speed lan connection through a friend but go figure it would not work. Brand new out the box and the ethernet wouldn't connect. Alot of party activity and it may lag, the bad thing is if you pull a monster when solo and the connection lags, the monster may disappear and be out of your view actually hitting you and when the connection catches up you have to turn, not too bad really but I did get killed by a forest hare at a lower level that way, by the time my connection caught up I was down to half hp and couldn't knock down the hare in enough time, so just be careful. Sometimes other characters will warp or ghost on you. If you are following a party member running and it lags, they maybe out of sight and you'll have to call for position.

Weird thing is when you go through a doorway where it downloads that new scene information I usally appear for about 5-6 seconds before highspeed users...weird. Oh yeah I turn evironmental animation off and everything else is compressed and at minimum.
