I just picked up Ranger last night. I'm liking the job, as it is a big change from what I usually play, Paladin. But I notice I can't just shoot the crap out of my targets, so I wonder, what's a good melee. I picked up Axe, might as level that as while I level this job, but I'm curious if this is a good idea. I already capped sword pretty high, so picking that up migt be a good idea for the immediate future. . .
((My first post! yay))

I wish I could answer this, but I never really meleed as RNG. I solo'd from 1-30 something on worms.

usually one decides what wpn to use according to the grade assigned to it by the job, for a ranger the 2 highest melee wpn grades are dagger and axe (B-). I would suggest using axes for the lower levels until archer's daggers are available

Short answer: Don't melee.
Ranged attacks are affected by your distance to the job. Find a weapon that gives +AGI or +r. acc. or r. atk. and just stand at a distance shooting.
Before the patch we would use axes or daggers, not its best to go with a melee weapon with good stats. (Usually daggers or axes, but later on a Fire Staff can do wonders.)
Good luck.

what level are you?
if you're still in the solo levels, try to learn where the sweet spot is, then simply one-shot all the easy prey you can find. equip an axe, and if the mob runs to you with a sliver of health left, melee it to death after you landed that first shot. if you miss, then it's just an easy prey, right? you can melee a bunny...
if you've started the party levels, equip an axe but don't melee. figure out where the sweet spot is and fire from there (with a bow. xbows and guns aren't good in dunes) when you get 100% tp, run up to the mob and use your axe waponskill then run back to the sweet spot. the arrow ws's miss too often at the lower levels x.X. also, remember to bring quivvers of iron arrows and beetle arrows. you can buy the arrows from npc's pretty cheap. figure out how to quivver them yourself.
i actually reccomend soloing until you can equip your ranger's necklace. you miss waaay too much on xp mobs before then.

Okay thanks for the replies. I think I got the basis of what I should do! Thanks!

As an aside, a RNG could theoretically melee just as well as any other melee in an EXP party. The Accuracy bonus trait adds more than enough to offset the skill gap in terms of Accuracy, and Axes are very damaging. I wouldn't encourage anyone to do this, as you'll perform far better with bow/crossbow, but it's good to know that you can do it if, for whatever reason, you need to one day.
The above posters are pretty much correct. Learn the sweetspot, then one-shot all EPs, a single axe swing will definetely finish them if they survive before they can even get a shot in.

Okay then, sounds good. I don't think I'll be focusing on Ranger, as I am too dumb for such a complex class, lol, one to many head shots as a paladin will do that to you. But this is a great job which I do plan on having a great time with.

dagger and axe, level them even if ranger meleeing isnt usefull anymore.
Jesus i'm glad i hit 70+ before the patch, it'd suck so hard to ahve to skill up dagger and axe in xp when you shouldnt be meleeing.
good luck man, @ lvl 34 i'd try gun to get a few skill ups since you can melee w/ a gun.
