which race should i be when i start
ive been having a hard time choosing between taru-taru,mithra, or hume male
i just wanna know which would be the best and more fun to play?

Get some dice and assign the races to a number. Roll the dice and which ever one you get that is what you'll play. Seriously, it doesn't really matter but if you have a hard time choosing I say go with the well rounded Hume.

I find your choices odd that you want hume and taru MALES, however a mithra is alright. What wrong with the female versions of hume and tarus if gender isnt an issue?

Unless you wear a hairpin, headband or ribbon there's no difference between male and female taru anyway. =/

just try em all out... you can make a character and walk around with him and then delete him in a matter of minutes... just make a character of every race and pick the one that you feel comfortable with :)

If your undecided about what job you want to be, then go Hume. They are good at everything so switching between jobs is no big deal. I find Hume to be rather boring though. I am a Hume in real life so why do I want to be one in a fantasy game?

If you want to go with a mage type job, then go with a Taru. Taru's are incredibly cute and fun to play. I don't know how anyone could be an a-hole and play a taru! They really do well with mage jobs and have the best amount of mp.

Mithra are fun. The only problem with being a mithra and being a guy is that you get tired of always telling people your a guy. My son plays mithra and at first it didn't bother him that much but now he REALLY wishes he could change to Elvaan Male. In game, mithra make great nins and thfs. They are about even with humes as far as being damage dealers but just look better doing it! LOL

So look at the jobs and see what appeals to you. Then choose what race you think would look best doing that job. If your undecided, hume is a great start!

I changed my character many times before i got the one i wanted. One reason for that is because when you choose the character and faces they look different in game from when you made your character. Anyways just pick what you think looks good to yourself bc if you dont you might want to make a new character after you have already done alot

PLDs have such horrible evasion skill that even a Mithra won't be dodging blows very often at all.

If you want to get a good sense of aesthetics, particularly in choosing the character's face, I recommend picking up the Model Viewer at http://phabin.folye.net/

You can view any PC race with any face and any equipment the viewer knows about. New lists of equipment .dats are made available from time to time to keep up with updates to the game. Note that using CoP data requires a "Custom DAT directory" be set to the CoP directory. (Only an issue if you installed FFXI in a non-default location, such as my drive D: install)

Picking the right face can be very important in getting the right look for the character, and also in distinguishing yourself from other characters. My main is Taru Female with face 8-A, it helps to give her a tough and sometimes a bit sullen look, which is not often easy to manage with Tarutaru Female.

I choose mithra as my beta character avatar. But its taru all the way ^_^. I almost wish i kept the same face as i did on Ragnarok but i changed it when i moved to Midgardsormr T_T. I wish there was some quest you could do to change your hair style.

Race really doesnt matter. Hell... look at me, Elvaan THF. I tear up mithra and taru THFs in Ballista. My melee damage makes up for my lower dex, and I still crank out high end weapon skills. In the endgame race doesnt matter too much. Obviously certain races will excell at some jobs, where others wont, but that doesnt mean you cant do the job effectively with the right gear.
