View Full Version : Lu Shang's - Still worth it?

I've just decided to take up fishing again after quitting it shortly after the changes to the whole fishing system were made a while ago and I started loosing all my lures.

Not wanting to start out as a total novice to fishing again and starting by loosing more lure I decided to practice a bit on moat carp for a while. 6 stacks of bait later and just over 50 fish I go and hand them in to the Elvaan to progress my quest for the Lu Shang rod, I though was futher on than I am but I only have just over 300 fish so far. With the rising prices of late a stack of moats are now selling for 15,000 gil. With those prices Lu Shang's Rod is going to cost in the region of 12.5 million gil worth of fish. Is this ever going to pay off or would it be better to just skip the rod comepletly and rely on other rods?

When I first started the quest it was going to be over 3 million gil worth of fish, 1 million of which you got back as a monetary reward when handing over the fish but what you get back now barely covers the cost of the corn to make insect paste.

Thoughts?

I never thought Lu Shang was that great of a rod anyway - at least not 1-2 million great.

From what i read in various fishing sites...around lvl 50-60, if you dont have a LuShang, alot of your rods are going to break for one reason or another(fish size...wrong rod..etc) and it will be incredibly frustrating unless you are ok with repairing them over and over(more than LuShang). And many times i have seen fishers tell me, if you are serious about fishing and taking it past the halfway point...get a LuShang...

On that note has anyone even gotten Ebisu?

<- Fishing lvl 4.

Insect Pastes go for 50-198 gil in the Windy Guild, even my noob ass knows that. a stack of insect paste doesnt cost more than 2k, and you get at least an 8k profit off of 15 minutes of fishing, assuming Moats are at 10k, which is normally a low.

I have no problem fishing and turning in the Moats for the quest, I have all the time in the world, and I can make a mean profit off of it in the meanwhile. I think you're making it look worse than it is ^^;;

Inflation has evened out a bit, and I'm inspired to raise NIN again, because Utsu NI is back to 1mil, from 3mil, due to there being a crap load of them in the AH.

Wish Ni would drop back to 1m on Fairy. 2.5m? Blow me.
What is LuShangs going for on the AH now on your server?

Lu is one of the best things Fishing ever gets. It WILL pay for itself.

Even if you get to 100 fishing skill, it doesn't mean much without a Lu. On the other hand, a level 0 fisher with a Lu can still pull in incredible catches. Judge for yourself.

Lu Shang's is an amazing rod. Never misses a catch due to size, extremely strong, great line time on most fish, good stamina drain boost.

And if you're hard-core about fishing, it's the only way to get the Ebisu - no other rod in the game will as consistently land Lik and Gugrusaurus for the quest.

I haven't checked in a while but I believe the current price for Lu Shang's on my server is somewhere in the 14 million+ range.

Lu Shang's is definately worth it if you intend to take fishing to 100. It goes for around 20mil on my server

I got my Lu Shang the hard (stupid?) way. I fished up every one of the 10,000 Moat Carp and half of those were after the payment per fish was dropped from 100 gil to 10 gil. And I've never regretted it. I like being able to consistently catch more and tougher fish at a lower fishing level (I'm 63 fishing now.)

If you're looking at it from a purely financial aspect and you can take or leave fishing - you may be better off with other options like camping NMs, crafting, etc. But if you enjoy fishing, I think you'll enjoy it even more with the Lu Shang rod.

Just watch out for some of those Legendaries!

edit> I forgot to add that you can buy Insect Paste for ~35gil each I think in Khazam. I'm sorry I don't remember the vendor's name but it's a regular one, not a regional or guild vendor.

It's impossible to get Ebisu without Lu Shang's. :) Well, I suppose you could... but I'd bet you'd slit your wrists long before you ever got close to enough Gugrusaurus and Lik without it.

hmmmm those monsterous fish you need for ebisu, i really don't know if composite/mithran will be able to reel them up at all :O

Lu Shang was the rod that gave me so much fun fishing with it ^^ Without it I wouldn't have enjoy fishing this much.
Fishing in SSG with Lu Shang was fun and relaxing.
Fihsing in port jeuno with Lu Shang for blacksole was boring and angry
Fishing for coral fragments was boooooorrrrrring D:

I am catching small fish just fine with ebisu. Cobalt jellyfish seem to bite less with this rod, but that's a good thing imo ^^

several months of everyday fishing at least 200 (4-6hrs?) carps on one character... but nowhere as bad as lik/gugrusaurus fishing :D

should not be to bad hoping they adjust the fatigue system, tho doing the math id say only weeks not months but either way its worth it

10000 moat carp / 200 moat carp per day = 50 days if you fish to capacity in a place that only has moat carp such as West Ronfaure, Rolanberry Fields, or Boyahda Tree (takes a few hours per day, depending on how well the fish are biting).

Minimum time to fish every carp yourself: 1.7 months. Realistically it'll be about 2 months even if you're religious about it every day, since you might lose some fatigue to items or monsters, real life interruptions of your schedule, etc.

In all reality, and to answer the OP's question, fishing for your Lu Shang is far superior to farming for it more than ever*, depending on character level and your ability to make gil. I fished over 8000 MC myself in Rolanberry Fields over a 3 month period before they changed fishing. I had my Lu Shang by the time I was lv. 53 WHM, and I still carry it everywhere with me just to see what I can fish up (or not in the case of a few places).

The caveat* with which I say this is that I'm a fisherman. I love fishing and the relaxation it brings. Lu Shang's is wonderful tool to allow you to enjoy fishing to it's full potential; however, if you don't enjoy fishing enough to put in a few months worth of work for Lu, then maybe some KSNM99's and such are a better means of obtaining your Lu Shangs. I loved the journey as much as the destination, and the journey after that (BARF on cheezy cliches;) ).

The short answer to your question is that it will take a fairly long time to farm/BCNM/ENM/etc. for enough gil to buy Lu or the MC's for it, and then get it to pay for itself at a $12-16M pricetag so that you come out in the black.
