Ok so was trying to synth up some nin tools for a friend of mine (Hojo tools to be specific), and i was out of grass thead so i went and tried to get some off the AH. Now bear in mind last year when i started clothcrafting and actually all the way until 6 months ago the thread was going for 1-2k, a little high but tolerable.....what is it now
6K NOW OMG give me a break.
I know this has been said before, but let me spell it out. You want cheap goods you need to make the supplies (the base material) cheaper. Now some inflation...ok, but a 500% increase in this.
And just so everyone knows....grass thread, sheep leather (another notoriously overpriced item) lvl 2 synths....which all this goes for crystals as well.
Everyone wants to make a quick buck, people see what others are willing to pay for and so that is what they charge, but you know what it is going to take you, and me and everyone else ignoring that and looking at how much *we* think it is worth. /sigh as that will not happend i am sticking with my proposal of SE just making a cap at which things may be sold at i.e. "Items on the Auction House can be put up for less than this, however they may not exceed this maximum (not the 999999999999 or whatever it is now)."
Please dont turn this into a rant (although i know it started that way) put some ideas on what we can do about it.
Thank you for your time, have fun and good luck

Midgard has it going for 15K a stack, so it could be worse, but with high prices especally on stuff like that i would suggest farming for materials Yag necklaces break down into grass thread that can be turned into grass cloth, although this requires you to be around Yags, but since the Cloth Guild is in Windy anyway its not that far to go to Giddeous. I feel your pain since i'm trying to work on weaving myself unfornatly at this time my highest job is mnk/15 so i have some trouble farming for supplies. It can be done though.

yagudo beads are, i think, 2k each now. i remember last year when they were 300 each.
and prices are doing this across all items...
i, for one, don't mind the hight inflation too much. i've used it to become rich. something still needs to be done though

I dunno if you can really call yourself rich unless you have like 50+ mil or so. With the inflation that's going on you really can't get much for your gil anymore. 10mil right now probably equals 2mil back in the day

15k.....for a basic basic item >< how do you tolerate that? and yeah i am going to set aside time on sunday to farm some up, but dam i feel sorry for your crafters ><
and yeah with gil depreciating everyday...well like i said any ideas on fixes?
How about trying not to buy anything on the AH for like a week? or would people just increase the price of their stuff rather than decrease it?

This is not only happening in FFXI.... I work with a guy who plays WoW and he said prices there also went way up! Ever since Xmas, the economy went up. Weird...

someone buying 1 million gil isn't the problem. it's those knuckleheads who go buy 10 million, blow it like it's worthless then buy 10 million more a few days later.
that's the problem.
Don't we have, like, 5 million threads on the same topic? Just wait and the prcies will eventually go down ^^;;

see i dont think they will go down, and here is why. People see what others are willing to pay for the items, others are lead to believe that they "must" have that item so will pay that price for it, or, in the case of materials simply decide that they will charge more on the other end (the crafted product) and to "save" time...so i dont think prices will go down, i hope they do, but that hope is very small.

off topic but related, in WoW the only things where the price of an item has gone up significantly are low level rare items (also called blue items and are fairly exceptional for their level) due to it's usage in low level pvp and rings and necklace items.
otherwise, prices are pretty steady and in fact, the prices of high level epic items (allso called purple items and are godly for their level) have even gone down. for example, there was an epic staff that used to cost 1500 gold 6 months ago and now people are seeking 500 to 600 gold for it.

Difference between gold buying/inflation in WoW and in FFXI is that in WoW it really doesn't matter how much things are selling for. Just about any item, besides maybe the previously mentioned low level blues, can be replaced with a BoP(basically rare/ex) item that drops elsewhere and is often better. Since you don't really have to camp these guys, there is really no NEED to buy stuff off AH. One of the things I really like about WoW. But lets not get into a WoW vs. FFXI thread here. Gnomes are no replacement for Tarutaru, enough said.

Usually you can see how prices go up.
It is quite surprising how fast items go up, but it usually goes up for a common reason.
That common reason is that people cant be bothered farming or its a rare piece of item.
I bet there have been many times when you could have farmed something but you just chose to buy it because of the hastle or perhaps even laziness.
Also people dont realize sometimes how hard some of these items are to obtain.
Some ofthese items and which are good examples are the cursed item siren hairs, or the famous elemental ores.
Thats alright target the newbies who buy gil and just tell them you'll do great deeds for them o.O
