Hi Guys,

My name is Monkeh from server gilgamesh.

I am currently making a website for FFXI dat files to share, compare and gather together a FFXI dat file / skinning community. ( ITS NOT UP YET )

I have already done this for the game Black and White : www.BWSource.com
please feel free to check it out so you know what I am on about :)

I am looking for DAT file editors to get in touch and send me there work. In return they will get there own personal status on the website when it is up.

All files submitted will be displayed with there image and the download hosted for free.

Also they will get there own forums to gather requests and showcase there new files.

I'm sure everyone already was up for it once. That's why Kilandor's website has a forum area like that. And it was pretty difficult getting people to go there to begin with.

We don't need another site. We don't need more places for information to get scattered and hotlinked to. We have enough places between this, Kilandor's, and the JP sites.

Not trying to be rude, I'm sure your website would be great. But we really don't need another extension for things that are already hard to find for people.

Thats understandable Monet, but let me just clear a few things up..

no 1. The site will not just be a forum. It will have pages of information, file downloads, images of each file and also a place to grab old files and help if needed with dat fook ups. yes we will have a forum but this will contain a showcase for file makers and a place to request files as an addon to the main site.

no 2. Skinners or ( dat makers ) will be able to upload the dat files and screenshots to the site themselves. This saves time on skinners having to wait for people to host the files for them.

no 3. I have seen many posts on this site on people hunting dat files they can not find. one thing our site will have will be "file hunters" whos job it is to take these requests and find files new and old to put on the site.

no 4. All credit is given to each and every file maker. For dat makers this could be a place to get noticed as we have had alot of success with BWSource.com skinners with this.

no 5. NOTHING will be hotlinked. All files will be hosted by us.

no 6. There will be a "Dat File of the month" run on the first of every month in hope to keep the files comming in. ( Signature rewards E.G : http://www.asreid.com/rd/forums.php?m=posts&q=17 )

no 7. our front page will consist of a rotating banner showing off new and old dat files from our members.

Plus more we havent added yet but hope too.

I understand your concerns but all I ask if you feel this way is to check the site out once it is fully up.

I am not trying to take the shine away from this site at all and I admire all who submit there files here as a community, if anything we would wish to affiliate.

Hope that clears a few things up.

You and Kilndor shoulda just brainstormed together something. Keep his forums, add your idea for .dat posting.

I like the idea of having a place where thumbnails of .dats are shown and able to be downloaded. Please be sure to add category functions to the download/upload process. Like Race>Sex>Armor Type.

I like the sound of your idea, but my damn favorites folder is too big to begin with...^^

Kilandor's site has mainly focused on the tools and techniques for modding and not so much the mods/modders themselves. He also maintains very strict control over the site, which is good for information but not so good for creative exchange. I like his site and visit it often, but I really like the idea of a place dedicated to the mods and modders, and I plan on actively participating in Zenith's site.

Before it was clarified that posting would be done in thumbnail fashion, we had a site exactly like the idea posted. You can goto General Dats in Kilandor's forum and get just aboue every .dat you've seen on here. Beyond that, there was Devifoxx's Collection.

That being said, I think a thumbnail site would be fine, but I still think that the 2 main ones should just be combined, rather than seperate. Kinda like a Modding Wal-Mart.

FFXIDats.com will focus on dat makers as well as show players how to make there own Dat files.

Just 1 question..

I have come accross a list of dat files that make the game easyer for players, One such dat file changes the colour of coffers to a light red or green to enable theifs and hunters to not miss.

As well as the 18+ and every other dat I will catagorise these, but are these dats classed as cheets and would they be welcome to the site by the members?

Hey,

Well I sent you a PM zenith, we should talk I agree. My purpose was to help try to bring everyone together. Maybe we can wokr something out.

My site is for everyoen modders/tools/everything. Only restriction, was no 18+ mods, and nothing that can cause unfair gameplay/cheating. And the no 18+ was decided by the members not myself. 18+ being basicly no private parts, (Nipple, Vagina,etc) you get the idea. As long as the model is clothed I think it would be ok to post there.

As for the strict part, Its really not to strict, Just want to keep things clean. (I dont' want it to be a place like Allakazahm).

May not be the most perfect place but I try, ^^, and know its not greatest forum, but I got no money. And its the best I could find for free BB (wish the creator finnaly update it :/ then it might be really really nice).

I've also tried to let the more frequent modder's have FTP access to upload as they want. But the fourm upload really works just as well for that.

But we shoudl talk and we can likely work soemthing out.

With registration you will need to accept for this.

So if a member does not want to see them they can choose this on registration and the 18+ pages will be blocked.

I like the way this site sounds, and the beta looks nice. If the final product turns out well I might start releasing my .dats there (currently using Kilandor's). Looking forward to it being complete.

I'd really like to see a good feedback system implemented. This would only apply to members, since it would be hard to force anything on people who aren't members.

Something similar to what they've done at Anime Music Videos

Perhaps make it so that after you've downloaded something, you can give it a rating on a 1-10 scale. Make leaving a long response optional. I do know one of the more agrivating things I've experienced is getting little/no feedback on my dat files.

Thoughts?

well, depends on how you will show files to members. if you show the pic before downloading a straight 1-10 raiting may not work. But maybe a checklist of ratings showing how good the dat works. Like a list of things they can rate like "performance in-game" "texture quality" "lightign quality" things like that. I've seen several dats that looked nice in the picture... but the skin texture was offcolored, or had glitches that made it look funny if you used it as an incomplete set. Just an idea if you think it wouldn't be hard to implement, or if you'd want to spend the time hehe.

Well, you wouldn't be able to rate a file until after you downloaded it. Hopefully, people would have actually tried it out before rating it, to see how well it looks ingame and whatnot. Also like what you mentioned about the different catagories.

But, I have no experience making websites, so I wouldn't be able to help you do this. Maybe someone else around here could, lol.

Another possibility would be this. After you download a file, you're allowed to post a 'review' of the dat. Completely optional, you'd have to be a membe to leave a review of it. Anyone would be able to read the reviews of the dat, or maybe just the creater.... I dunno.

As you can see the review/comments are set out the same as alkazams website, so yes you will need to be logged in to submit a review but you will also be able to post images of you using the dat in game.

Also we have had to make it so you can download any Dat file without being logged in but can only download +18 once logged in :

This is so we dont restrict the under 18s or those without permission.

Well, zenith seems to be gone. But I plan to goto the same style system, and convert over our current forum from FFXIMC, but that will of course take some time. But I don't plan on doing the adult mods but you probally coulda guess that :)
