Gs vs. bs = Good shit versus **** shit? :P
Anyways... I think you make most money with Gold Smithing. Very expensive though. Smithing is easy if you do Mining with it.

Haha, if only it were that easy. Even if you got to 50 Goldsmithing, you'll still just break even with the ingots ^^; And Gold isn't terribly common while mining, either... Trust me, just buy the ingot.

hi there everyone, wel i would like to add something in this post
no matter if you level up Smithing or Goldsmithing its always best to have a little backup craft to fall back on for the gil you need to level both of these crafts
my smithing is currently lvl 30 and goldsmithing is lvl 17, not all that high i know since i also been leveling up all my other crafts for gil
most people just go like "hey that craft seems like you can make huge gil in"
though they forget that they also need to put huge gil into the craft to see the results of the profit that you want at the end
i'm more of a person that likes to level all of the craftings at once, since i'm also a WHM elemental hunter
if you are bored with like hunting down monsters for the items you need then try doing a checkup on the item you need
most NPC sell items at a very very cheap price compared to auction house
god if i only knew this before lol
for a few items i payed like 60 times the price then when i would buy them from a NPC
as you can see that was a pritty painfull moment for myself also
though once i done the checkup on the items then i found out where i can get it the most easyest way
might be good good advice for the people who don't like spending big gil to level up a craft

Investing in crafting before u hit 75 on ur first job is insanely hard. I would just avoid it until ur a high level so u have more farming/BCNM options.

Depends on the pace, I suppose, but expect things to slow down a good bit the higher you get in the craft.
Smithing and Goldsmithing have a built-in moneymaker in terms of the jump from very cheap but non-stackable ores (Copper, Tin) to stackable ingots used in many recipies (Bronze, Copper), which is very helpful to begin with. Even if you buy your fire crystals at the AH in Bastok (where they tend to be highest) you can still turn a decent profit on Bronze Ingots considering how low-level a synth they are.
Otherwise, I'd point out Gardening. Once you get the hang of it, it's fairly easy to turn this into a relatively consistent source of income. Seeds are also pretty easy to get, just kill sapling enemies. You can even steal the over-priced Grain Seeds from Strolling Saplings in Konschtat Highlands, if you have THF high enough. The main downside of gardening is that you have to be able to make it on at specific times of day to get the best results. The upside is that it takes little time to actually do Gardening tasks, freeing up the rest of your time to pursue other things.
That said, many people seem to feel that one of the most profitable things you can do is solo low-level jobs, farming crystals and other useful drops which can be sold on the AH.

Lunaryn is pretty much correct. Every craft has its own low-level recipe (usually creating materials for the craft, like turning ores into ingots or turning hides into leather) that is profitable and consistent. You need literally millions of gil to take any given craft to the point where you start getting huge profits. Nothing wrong with levelling crafting, but if you do it with the goal of getting higher up, you're gonna drive yourself into bankrupcy when the money could've been used towards better equipment. Research the recipes you can do, and if you find that at any given moment that craft is going to start costing you too much, then just stop. Activities that don't require your character to statistically get better at them, like mining, gardening, or farming are usually the best profits until you can get to a high enough level where you can make millions of gil and invest them into a craft to get that gil back once you're done. Levelling low level jobs is one of my favorite things to do for many reasons. Monsters die so fast at those levels that it's the best way to collect many crystals, drops, and priceless beastmen's seals. If you know where to look, you can buy most of your equipment from NPCs and actually turn them in for profit at the AH when you're done. You get EXP really quickly too, which is turned into CP and can be used for more profit. Even if you don't level new jobs regularly, be sure to make as much money as you can while levelling your main and sub jobs for the first time, and it'll save you much farming later on ^^

Yea hes right, get a couple level 75 jobs first. ...Assuming you have no life either, ofcourse.

Deciding what is better out of Goldsmithing or Blacksmithing all depends on how much gil you have to sink into it. Goldsmthing can become more profitable then Blacksmithing, but takes a considerable amount more. That being said Blacksmithing is still very profitable.
Also, with the comment regarding do not try to lvl a craft until you are 75 first is not true, I got my Blacksmithing up to eighty something with my highest job being in the 60s and I have a friend in the high 90's of alchemy and is only a 62rdm. Just do not expect it to be any easy walk for either of those crafts and good luck.

My bonecraft and leather has potential to create more gil than my gsmithing and smithing, with significantly less overhead to lvl.
High level crafts are all smoke and mirrors, until you actually reach these levels. Many people theorize which craft is better (gsmithing and smithing) and such, but in todays economy it's not entirely true anymore.
Unfortunately there aren't many people to offer first hand experience what it's really like to have all these crafts leveled. Such is the illusion we continue to see.

I think you make money in GS through desynthing. I know of a player that exclusively did this (hardcore style) and profitted nearly 80 million gils in a couple of months. I seriously doubt leather and bone can rake in that much (Yes, I'm talking *net profit*)

Used to always be the trend to farm the bejeebus out of Davoi for gold masks and desynth them but that place began to be overun by RMT'ers and other GS's en masse.

Yeah it's possible over the course of months, but so is any craft really.
Just over a 3 week span I accumulated 90 million profit from bone alone. My gsmithing can't touch that, and I know nearly every market well.
Of course all markets are suffering atm though, everything is slow.
