Buy a Barebone online!!!
Barebone- $150 (includes case, motherboard, and procesor)
Harddrive- >$140 (120GB 7200 RPM)
Video Card- $100 (get a GeForce 3 or somethin)
CD Writer/DVD- $50+ depends on how good you want the drive to be
512DDR RAM-$70+ (shouldb't cost much now)
Total: about $460 (you can still cut down some, just depend on whether you can get a good deal or not)
Keyboard/mouse etc- Use those from your old computer
(still using my 5 year old keyborad from windows 95 ^^;)
EDIT: opps..didnt know u got that much money ><
$1500 DAMN...i can get a really good PC
(I build my own by the way)

$1500-$1800?! Holy CRAP! If I had that much to spend I could build an absolute MONSTER!
I can definately tell you what to get and even give you various alternatives as far as price and preformance differences but I still have two questions for you to answer first so I can give you the correct responces.
1.Are you comfortable with putting together your own system?; or are you looking for something that's already built and ready to go? (Building your own is going to be ALOT cheaper and you can make the most of your money but you'll also need to know what your doing, what you have to work with, how to make it work effinciantely and what to do if something goes wrong. I've seen people waste thousands of dollers because they didn't static proof themselves before touching their new hardware. Whereas you could spend a little more money and buy a prebuilt machine that's geared toward gaming from Alienware, Falcon Northwest, etc. that's going to cost you probably ALL your budget but will give you a really good system that's been tested for realiability and is definately ready to go, just plug it up and play. Alot of people put prebuilt machines down simple because they cost more and truely that is their only disadvantage. Simple overclocking can do wonders for the prebuild gaming machines if you wanted more from them.)
2.Are you wanting to buy something from your local store or are you going to order products online? (you can simply find much better deals online than you can at your local dealer, but I also understand that not everyone likes to or can order online.)
Answer these two questions and I'll be your very own personal advisor.
