...has already been posted on this forum. Have some curteousy and do yourself, and others, a favor and look through the forums yourself, like we/they did, PLEASE. Chances are, your "New post/please help/how do you do this" thread is gonna be answered saracstically anyway because it's been answered several if not a hundred times already.

These forums are not a mystery. There are direct threads dealing with help topics as well as Sticky's to either teach or link you in the right direction.

...and since I don't have the points, nor do I think it would do any good to sticky this again, I'll just update it everyday to keep close to the top.

Yea, I get tired of answering the noob questions sometimes. Its like good grief for the 500th time Goto my fourm and LOOK at the tutorials or support section maybe? Or the million other noob questions about MCD. And many others.

Don't get me wrong I don't mind helping others. But its usually pretty obvious when people dont' atleast try to help themselves first.

FYI, its been tried already, stickied and everything. http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11555

But despite the valiant efforts of pai pai we're doomed to answer the same 10 questions day in and day out in new threads.

Thats true. But its not stickied in here :/ I honesly never goto any part of this fourm but here.

I got it bookmarked Directly to this fourm :)

But yes like you said, I doubt it would help any anyways.

aegina

anyone who asks a question that was answered in the op page of a sticky should be shot lol.

but it happens all the time.

if you sticky yet another n00b guide, it'll get ignored too.

Monet
12-10-2005, 02:52 PM
No no no, I don't want it stickied. Cuz perosnally, I don't pay much attention to them either. Not when "Mod This..." and ".dat here" catch my eye from below. I want it left right here in the main Topic area so that when someone asks a question the link to this post can be pasted in their response.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all about helping people, too. But, when you're telling 100 people a month where to get Model Viewer from and how to export FFXI models, it gets a little redundant and seems counterproductive to our efforts. Like everyone said, modding takes work. If they don't even have the drive and motivation to search through help forums and stickys, then they're prolly not gonna be much of an assett in the mod community.

i agree, to be a modder takes initiative, if they can't look, try things out for themselves and you have to hold thier hand the whole way, you'll be better off teaching a monkey.

luckilly no one can buy an accout of a level 60 modder, the works speak for themselves

Yeah, a few bad nuts can spoil the Glace, but I personally detest any White Mage that charges for anything that requires merely MP. When I teleported, it was "Pay What You Wish". When I raise people, it's always R2, until I get R3, of course. XP is XP, regardless of level. I even just help people, it's for the sake of helping. Hell, I can't complain, I get skillups most of the time doing stuff. I've chewed more than my fare share of asses for people talking about how much they charge for Raise or doing the famous Valkurm Dunes "/sh Raise, Do you need it? XXk, /tell Retard"...whatever...

I hate selfish people in the game.

Jiang :

Good work, especially with the Link outfit. Maybe you can start answering the same questions repeatedly. ;P

XD.. yea.. go to HIS forum. :P
By the way, downloaded your translated VRS. Was kinda dissappointed. All the translations seem to have been done by an auto-translator :(, not someone who actually knows chinese. Didnt help me much to be honest. Ow well.

And I agree people need to look around the forum first. But seriously, no one who quickly wants to find some info even wants to register. They just quickly drop in, cant find anything, create an account and post a post somewhere round the forum.. Thats why I think there should be a big thread or guide on the homepage of this forum.

I really do like the Link outfit, it made me smile and the sword looks sweet. Only thing I'd change on the sword is making the blade more metallic and silver. Good job though

Well, Yea it mostly was auto-translated. I don't Know Japanese so I was just using transltors on the net. But its atleast usable now. And alot of things have were changed so they made atleast a little bit more sense from what it was orginally.

Mean have to take what you can get. Cause i'm guessing there is not to many people who know how to do it or would have even put the effort into it. And well I figured it out from the same translation everyone has now. With nothing to help me really to start. So anyone can figure it out and the basics pretty easy if they try. Cause that was basicly my start into FFXI modding, I really hadn't done any before that. And also now there are serveral very usefull tutorials to help you do stuff.

But not everything was figured out alone. Me and Strom figured out alot together. And Onmike helped with getting some stuff figured out also.

Monet
12-13-2005, 07:31 AM
I guess what she's trying to say is that the "Original/Old" Translation read like the back of a chopsticks package at China-Wok. That was a big problem for me, too, at the beginning of using VRS. That's why I used a combination of that guide, the ACTUAL site, Babelfish, and messing with the program to make my tutorial.

Come on now...why would someone that even knew Chinese/Japanese bother with translating the program?

i always give my cures and raises out for free.

i could understand the translation for the vrs ok. i had some trouble getting it to run on my pc, but i'm sure i'll get it to work once i go back and try again (a little too busy to mess with it atm)

i voted the "This is stupid. i give it 3 days" option, but now that i think about it, it's worth a try. putting all relevent info in one spot, so if someone asks another dumb question, we can just copy/paste the n00b guide. if it works out well enough, maybe we can even port the idea to other topics

This has nothing to do with learning Final Fantasy XI. It has nothing to do with Playing Final Fantasy XI. It has to do with Final Fantasy XI .dat Modding.

It has nothing to do with learning how to do .dat mods. It has nothing to do with learning how to reskin. This has to do with laziness.

This post will not be stickied... BECAUSE of the fact that noone reads stickies, especially the "Read First" stickies. This post will remain at the top of the normal .mod section because thus far it has served to thwart the 10-12 posts per week that all started along the lines of "Help me open Model viewer" and "What's a model".

It is here to kindly remind people new to modding that their question has been answered more times than the cost of SH+1. All they have to do is actually look through the old posts and find out how to do stuff themselves.

I am not being rude about it, but reduntancy is counterproductive. Likewise, speaking of counterproductivity, I've already noted my feelings about this elsewhere in this post... Like in the very first thread.

Seeing as 75% of the vote is "no, this isnt going to work" perhaps you should stop "bumping" this back to the top.

Monet
12-27-2005, 01:19 PM
/laugh

Seeing as how it's been working despite what everyone thought from the beginning, I'll prolly keep bumping it. The pole was more of a joke at the beginning of this thread, than an idea of how long this post would last.

By my last count, since this thread was started, we've had about 2-3 "Lazy" posts from people. That's one a week, versus the 5 or 6 a week that used to be posted.

Brayden
12-27-2005, 02:23 PM
8 of the 50+ posts here are just you "bumping" your own topic. As this trend continues, the page count of this thread will lengthen and the original post, which was done weeks ago and was 1/1 will be drowned out by idle chat and banter so that when people finally do click on this link they will be at page-lord-knows-what. Joke or not, the poll shows what people think, 3/4 of those people say that this is a waste of time. You bumping your own topic doesnt change that.

Double Post Edited:
And where are you getting your numbers from? rhysdavies just posted two threads in the course of hours reguardless of stickes, search function, or this useful thread.

Monet
12-27-2005, 03:23 PM
My posts on this thread all stay IN the thread, B.A. They aren't scattered all over the forums. The very first post on this thread is what's important, not the rest of it, or the "bumping" to the top. I bump it to keep it within view of people searching the forums for help.
The poll, from what I've seen hasn't been updated in forever. Noone has mentioned it being a waste of time, besides you. It doesn't take time away from anyone else on here. There isn't even an option on the poll about it being a waste of time. It was simple joke at the beginning of this asking if the people who actually posted on here "frequently" thought it would work. And it has. Maybe if you had actually posted more than 5 or so times in the .dat section, you could challenge my "numbers".
I'm not going to get any further into your little flamer-war. But, facts don't lie. This thread has either worked, or the number of new modders joining the forums has dropped considerably. Which also can't be the case, becasue I'm seeing new, great stuff all the time.
As far as Rhysdavies post, I believe it was answered appropriately, and it was taken into consideration of my numbers game...
Also, thank you for your help in bumping it to the top^^

Exactly, other posters, moderators etc used their time to answer the questions that a "Beginner" posted. Rhysdavies did not come here, to this thread, and then divert his attention to the wealth of knowledge that already exists.
By the way, I have done nothing to help "bump" your thread as you seem to do so quite well all by yourself. ^^

I have to agree with Battle Angel. While this does seem like it may be a good idea, the fact is it's pointless to keep bumping this because it won't make a difference. I for one don't care if you want to keep bumping it but if you believe it will work then more power to you.

Instead of putting a How To Mod somewhere hidden in the forums. . .

( to be missed when someone used the wrong keyword or phrase or lost/missed trying to go through 20+ Results, none of which pointed to the original other than with sarcasim)

. . . Perhaps we should look for or link to an information site (that isn't a forum) that has an easy to find Tutorial like Phabin's site.

A better one would be a collection of written guides and "how to"s in 1 read-only section that cannot be added to by anyone other than admin. That way there's less /cheer /praise spam that fills up the page to obscurity. It gets old going through those checking for any updates to a particular tutorial.

I've only read the first page and the last page of this thread. First page made me wonder why the heck this poll is even on this section of the forums. Thanks for clearing that up. . . or perpetuating ignorance. . . whichever you prefer.

Monet

Deo...

Have you even checked the sticky's on this forum? There is one labeled "Dat Links" or something like that.

There are already resources organized and lain out for people that don't know what they're doing. But, aftert answering the same question about Model Viewer 10 times in one week, it gets kinda old.

I'm not posting here to detere new modders. It will actually help them in the long run if they learnt to look for what they want.

Deo
12-30-2005, 01:04 AM
Yeah, I looked. First thing I did. I even checked again just now. Only tutorials I see are a link to Phabin's and Amadaun's coloring guide.

All the other links are for downloading tools or pre-made dats. I don't understand japanese, and I shouldn't be expected to, so an easy to understand or step by step tutorial on how to use those odd tools is still lacking.Taking a program and spending 24hours clicking randomly is not how I would prefer to learn how to do things.

I myself have spent hours looking up and down this forum and kilandor's and have yet to find an easy to understand tutorial for say, metaseqoia. So I'm left with coloring and alpha mapping. Have yet to see a guide on reflective surfaces, metalic mimicry, nor a basic understanding of making aesymetrical designs.

So far, it's pretty much been left off to "Practice using VRS." I can't even download it due to the current server problems on kilandor's site.

Most of us "noobs" keep asking because we've already ran up and down the forums using search and skimming through text finding nothing on specifically what we want to do.

So where is this "Beginner Guide to Everything" that this poll is about? nothing but a few stickies as far as I can tell.

Monet
12-30-2005, 02:38 PM
How do you think WE learned?! I'd never touched a 3-D App before I started with FFXI mods!

You're going to sit here and whine about a lack of resources because you "shouldn't be expected" to do something that everyone before you did?! You are lazy and ungrateful.

The program has been translated for you. There are numerous links to "How To" articles. Posts have been made about fixing problems over and over.

Why don't YOU make the tutorials? Spend hours upon hours with the programs like some of us did and YOU type out the tutorial for a program like Meta. Then post it somehwere on here or on your own site, and even THEN, watch how many n00b questions about that same topic you read.

Meta tutorial : Open .MQO File > Select Point > Move Point > Save

Not much harder than that.

Deo
12-31-2005, 06:42 AM
Yeah, just figured that out after I posted. Pretty much all that needs to be said is: 'Figure it out, yourself. It's either stumbling in the dark or thumbing through archives upon archives. Both will take time and there's no point asking those that figured it out because they had it tough and easing the suffering of future generations is not their responsibility. All questions will be left in the dust and all requests shall be denied.'

As much as you don't like answering noob questions, couldn't you just ignore them? I'm sure they will figure this out on their own in time.
