Okay. So..I got super excited today because I finally got around to installing FFXI on my computer. (Windows XP user.) I followed the instructions to the letter, which is incredibly unsual for me. But I wanted to do it right, and so I was tedious in my efforts to make installation run smoothly for me. However, life handed me the usual failure.

I have no desire to play the game without a controller. So, I followed the booklet to get to the configuration menu. That is;

Start Menu>PlayOnline>Final Fantasy XI>Final Fantasy XI Config

This is supposed to display the Configuration menu. Which it does, however..I just get a box. I have no tab window in which to adjust my settings. o_X Excuse image posting, but for better understanding;

I even tried uninstalling everything, then reinstalling, but to no avail. I wonder if something was corrupted during install, if I'm missing a file, or if I'm a complete and utter r-tard and missed something. Anyone have any idea how to help? I will totally offer myself up for slave sale if someone can guide me through this. Please? ;_;

This is a "bug" that happens on many games when theyre being installed, but only for specific users.. Even though they did everything right. Its so annoying.. Anyways that wont help you.

First of all, youre not a noob or a retard. This is just a bug. What you could try is to download VanaDiel Benchmark http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/multimedia/download/bench/ and see if FFXI is compatible for your PC.. That could be a problem. For the rest.. I really dont know. There are several things I did at other games.. Such as trying to acces Config menu through another Icon.. Closing down programs such as Virusscan. Weird things.

Maybe I do can comfort you with the thought that a Controller for a PC player is kinda unhandy, since you have to type a lot, use commands etc. I play almost never with mouse, i dont remember me using it last 10 hours :P. If you do would use controller, you would still have to put it down a lot and get your keyboard to type something. Cause youre required to talk in Party's for example.

Good luck on installing though.. maybe someone else can give you some better technical advice.

Double Post Edited:
Also, after you installed, make sure you updated FFXI and everything. You can do this by opening PlayOnline Viewer (POL) And going to the FFXI screen, and press the button "Play". FFXI will start looking for and downloading updates.

^^

Thanks for all your advice, Sweetkitty! It turns out that it was in fact related to a graphics problem. After an upgrade and reinstallation of the game, the configuration menu appears as it should.

Thanks again!
