When does account/character expire?

Lets say you quit playin FF for awhile cancel your card, etc.. how long do they keep your account/char open ?

Wrong, I lost my character after 3 months of cancelling my content ID.

Please don't go spouting off what you don't know:

FFXI TSR John: You are correct. Canceling the content IDs does not remove the credit card. You will have access to the Play Online viewer as long as the credit card is valid. The three month policy has changed. Now you have twelve months to reactivate the characters before they are deleted.

When did this happen? I'm telling him what I know from MY experience so the fact that I lost my character in 3 months is very much the truth.

Yes, I know, this is the <b>old</b> way of doing things, it has been changed for pretty much a bout half a year or more now.
