Leveling in Western Altepa Desert, I've seen a few high levels farming with a BST subjob. I've seen a 70+WHM and a 68+BLM with pet cactuars/dhalmels helping them out.
These mobs are too high to charm with the maximum level of BST subjob (37) so how does charming work when you sub BST?
Thanks.
It's generally believed that to calculate what level your main can charm when subbing BST, you take your main job's level, and add it to your BST level (as a main, not a sub) then divide the sum by 2.
Example:
My main = 72, my BST level = 62.
72+62= 134/2 = 67
In my case, as my RDM, with BST subbed, I should be able to charm anything up to 67 without any problems, assuming I have decent CHR gear. I can technically charm a level 72 mob as well, and it will stay charmed as long as any EM mob would normally, but since it is 5 levels higher than the recommended level, it will be more difficult to charm. It would be like a level 67 BST trying to charm a level 72 (VT mob).
On the other hand, if I only had my BST at 37, and subbed it on my RDM, even though its as high as a sub as it can get, charming a mob will still depend partially on the BST main.
72 RDM + 37 BST = 109/2 = 54
For proof of this theory, we have a handy ability called "gauge" which allows us to check how likely it is that we can charm a mob. It should reflect this pretty accurately.
Don't trust gauge.
Monster signa + gauge, even slime = can possible charm
Light staff + gauge, even slime = might be able to charm
Gauge mearly tells you how much CHR you have.
But Light Staff charming > +CHR, to a degree.

I agree, gauge is rarely useful, but it can indicate whether you should be able to charm something or have a snowballs chance in hell of charming it.
Theres this level 70 RDM who is part of the Amemet team on Alexander (gil sellers). I'm not sure why, but she subs BST. Several times when passing by the area, I've noticed that she gauges the Sand lizards and they are always "it would be difficult to charm" even though as her main, she is 7 levels above them. However, I'm pretty sure her BST is only 35. Her success rate on charming these is horribly low.
On the other hand, I can charm any of that stuff no problem.

Sorry if this will cause flamage, but /BST should never be subbed IMO to a BLM. In order for that to work, you need +CHR equip and this makes their main, BLM, weak as we need to concentrate on MP(depending on class), INT, and Magic Attack bonus, or Elemental Skill bonus equip.

The BLM in question was just farming, not in an exp PT. If it helps the BLM kill stuff quicker, why not sub it? (other than losing the obvious advantage of /THF for Treasure Hunter.)

For farming, sure, though its not pratical to do that, /whm for healing or /rdm, /thf are all better subs.

a BLM farming efficently shouldn't need to /whm or rdm for cures. Drain and Aspir work wonders.
Hell, just mana-tap a worm, and run away ^^

Do you know how much stronger those pets are than a BLM? You can kill 3x as quick with no downtime with BST sub. Whm and Rdm are useless subs, and THF provides better drops, but at the disadvantage of killing much slower. Sure you could run up to a Spider and cast Freeze on it. So half its HP is gone, and so is 1/3 your mana.... You finish it off with a -ga2 spell and a few swings of your staff. Sure this is quick, but it would only take 10 seconds longer to kill with a strong pet, and you wouldnt need to use any mana.
/BST is awesome for farming, but really only practical when you get "Leave" at 70/35. I was able to successfully farm several rare items from level 65+ mobs with no danger to myself. Charmed Greatclaws in SSG to use against Mindgazers for my Golden Hakutaku eye ^^. I plan to use Girtabs against Spelunking Sabotenders in Quicksands to get my Star Spinel for Star Necklace quest, but I need help getting in behind the doors ; ;
Helping lowbies with 50 cap items is a breeze too. Sub BST, charm a Crawler Hunter and kill 2 exorays per minute for mold, and kill explosures easily with a pet for coal. So many uses, its ridiculous.

So far I've used /bst while on blm for skilling up. I only need to cast blind, then sit and whack the entire fight. I have just as much success charming on blm as I do while as bst. I don't need to use +chr gear at all, I just use all my blm stuff.
I'm a believer of the (main lvl + bst lvl) / 2 = charm potential theory. I'll also be quite happy once I hit 70 blm so that I can release, haha
lil off topis but is this the Jonah from Midgard?

yes, yes it is Drew =D How are you doing?
Back on topic, BST subjob is freakin' awesome.. since my initial post, I have easily solo'd my CN coffer key, farmed items for opo-opo crown, and killed Tainted Fleshes to spawn an NM as a BLM/BST. I rarely mischarmed and received mad skill ups while my pets tanked.

... But you almost died from mischarms yesterday while we were duoing! omgwtfbbq ;o
I plan to go out on RDM one day and hold a better solo skillup by myself for club. Robber Crab vs. Robber Crab should be nice enough, yes? o:
RDM64 + BST61 = 125 / ~62.5 (62) Charming ability of a BST62.
What would happen if you have a let's say, NIN25 job subbing BST, though?
NIN25 + BST61 = 91 / ~45.5 (45) Charming ability of a BST45... surely, with this formula, there's also a type of priority rule as well?

If you tried to charm a level 45 mob with a 25 nin/bst, you better start running. Otherwise, you will fail and die a horrible death.
The "formula" is just an estimate on what you should be able to safely charm when subbing BST. Obviously when dealing with mobs 20 levels above you, this is not going to work.
In short, yes, there must be a priority rule...

I do agree there must be a priority as well, but im all for the formula. I didnt want to PT with WHM so i subbed BST and headed out (WHM9 BST18). According to the formula i should be able to charm a lv 13 mob, and i was able to charm toughs pretty easily. There were a few fails but thats bound to happen. I really focused more on EMs though, but I did notice there was a decrease in the time the charm would hold.
