I'm a few levels below you and I remember being kind of embarassed by how much dmg I took. I'm 55 at the moment with what I consider top-notch gear (for someone playing through to 75 the first time) and I've been taking (depending on what I fight) anywhere from 80-120 dmg normal hits. With food I think I was up to +29 VIT. How much damage were you taking at that lv?

With food I take around 60-120 @ Lv71. Specials can peak at 350 though... ; ; ... like Death Slash or whatever that Skeleton special is.
When fighting mobs that have nasty specials I usually change to Jelly Ring to decrease damage recieved a bit.
Well, this is a somewhat pointless topic. How much damage you take depends on what you are fighting at the moment, what your gear is and what food you are eating. Unless you provide more information such as what mobs hit you for what range of damage I think its safe to say PLDs in the lvl 55-70 range get hit for anywhere between 60-120 damage.
Are you leveling in Vally of Sorrows and fighting Velociraptor and the occasional Peryton? Because you'd be getting hit for more like 60-100 not 60-70. I took on Perytons at 58 in a party of all 58s, those things hit damn hard but there were no deaths and it was fun to take on such a hi lvl beast.

I take about 80-120 dmg per hit Darters and Tormentors at level 67 with food. With defender, it's the same damage, so I never need to use it unless the mobs is +13 levels or higher. I have somewhere between +25-30 VIT. Got rid of my Gluttony for an Espandon +1 and Diamond shield. Only saw like maybe 1-2 points of damage difference, if at all.
Yeah, you start to realize the quality of your party makes or breaks you as a tank. As I said we took on Perytons at 58 to end our chains, with an all 58 party. I went back at 60 with a bunch of others and I got beat up bad. I will never ever join a 2 RDM no WHM party again I got killed twice by Perytons.
Oh yeah and Defender does seem worthless now.

One thing to really watch out for are mobs that Double Attack. I was fighting Processionaries in Boyhada at lvl 62 and taking 80-100 Dmg/hit wasn't too bad; except that they would be Double Attacking me for the damage in the afforementioned range about 1/3 attacks. Chaining was tough, especially since we had a Smn/Whm (who did a very good job).
However, doing something like Cockatrices or Toramas at lvl 62-64, respectivly, with my current gear I'll only be looking at maybe 70-90 Dmg/hit and a lot of misses and parries.

Defender's use only pops up in scenerios where the mobs you are fighting have a massively higher ATK rating than your own DEF.
Examples: Gods (duh), Aura Statues, etc.

Yea for EXP you will rarely see a use for Defender, but once you start doing Gods, Dynamis, HNMs etc. Defender can make a lot of difference.

I don't see the harm in using Defender, I mean, A party does not invite you thinking "Sweet another DD" I doubt they think of your DMG at all. Anyways, its nice for that boost of 80 DEF or w.e no harm in it, not like your wasting them lol.
All I'm saying is in an EXP party sometime in the 60s you will be getting hit for 80, 84, 96, 84 hit Defender and still be getting hit for 84, 80, 96.

There is a harm. You will quickly notice that you'll get massive diminishing returns for the DEF gain you get from Defender as you increase in level. Your DEF is high enough that adding that extra 25% makes little to no difference against most exp mobs (there are of course the odd few that hit pretty hard).
So, you're losing -25% attack for pretty much no reason. This is detrimental when you start getting all that lovely +enmity from your AF. You want more successfully landed hits, not to mention being able to Spirits Within often. With Defender up, you'll be whiffing / hitting a lot of 0's compared to when you didn't have Defender up.
As for Damage output, you'll really start to see Paladin pick up by level 68+. We're not DD's by any means, but you do deal damage and it's useful in keeping hate. Defender really starts to lose it's usefulness around 55 I'd say.

Yes, defender is detrimental to use if the defense boost does not reduce your damage taken. I typically do 200-300 damage to the exp mob per fight. That 200-300 damage kills the mobs that little big mcuh quicker. That could save about 2-4 hits of damage being done to you, not to mention the fact that it's MUCH easier to hold hate. Just because you have an ability, doesn't mean you have to use it all the time.

I usually click Defender on if an exp mob is regularly hitting me for over 100 (e.g. at my level Hobgoblin Alastors in bibiki bay have stupidly high atk for their level, so I use it there), not counting criticals and specials. This is normally enough to reduce it to ~75-90 per hit which I find managable.
I do this on a mob-by-mob basis though, so if we suddenly fight something that's only hitting me for ~50 per hit I will immediately click Defender off as it will not be reducing damage taken by as much.

It works for me at my level, I go from getting hit for 80 then Defender and getting hit for 50-60 which is nothing.

As I said, depends on what you're fighting.
As well, you'll really stop seeing a use for it once you get Spirits Within (unless you're fighting mobs that hit very hard).

I agree with what most people are saying i am Level 73 and it depends on the Mobs your fighting atm, gear and food really. as far as im concerned. I take varied damage Skeles in KRT do diff dmg then Gobs in Bibiki Bay. And if i am using Sword or Earth Staff and Jelly Ring Dmg Varies also.

hmm, at i always use defender. at 62 i have vit gear, and life belt and mermans gorget for acc. against toramas i've noticed a difference with defender. like when i get paralyzed and dont realize, i use defender and it ends up not working. then i cant use it again for another 3 minutes. i definitely notice a difference during that 3 minute period.
