I need to know which weapon to raise skill in. Do redmages use staves or swords?

Lol yes, level throwing and use pebbles in parties. I'm sure all the people that previously hated rdms that melee will be glad to get them instead of the ones that throw pebbles as their main job.

Anyway, yeah level sword and dagger. Those are the only two that are really worth using though I am currently leveling archery just so I can have the fun of hitting some one with sidewinder in ballista when I hit 60. Also leveling club when I am bored. Not exactly sure why I am since we can't use any good clubs and the weapon skills that we get aren't in the least bit impresive. Oh and rdm don't get skill in staff so you can't even level that with rdm main.

RDM can't use pebbles.

Also, RDM doesn't have skill in staff.

Try to keep your sword capped or close to being capped for farming and if you are xping off of beetles or crabs you could benifit from the dagger's Energy Steal and Energy Drain weaponskill for stealing MP.

Dagger is great for farming elementals, too, you get low delay for your en-spell which is most of your damage, and Energy Steal/Drain (especially nice when you're farming because you probably have THF subbed instead of BLM and thus don't have Aspir).

Unlike sword, RDM get the EX dagger weaponskills (viper bite and cyclone) regardless of subjob. Viper bite kinda sucks without the SATA though, especially since we don't even benefit much from the poison effect - I think it is weaker than Poison II. Cyclone on the other hand is INT based, like most elemental WS, so a RDM's cyclone can be stronger than a THFs even though the daggers we can use are weaker.

RDM can't learn Dancing Edge or Shark Bite, but *can* quest for Evisceration.

Sadly our dagger selection is very limited - I am currently using Darksteel Baselard, but trying to get my hands on a Bano Del Sol, which has more damage and less delay than Garuda's Dagger and is usable 4 levels sooner. Daylight Dagger looks very nice too, but you have to kill Tzee Xicu the Manifest... oh and be level 70, which I'm not yet.

Using clubs to actually *hurt* things seems to be the exclusive province of WHMs - although PLD have a high skill in club, the available maces are so weak in damage/delay that even the bonus damage vs. bones isn't enough to make them worth using compared to sword. RDM have a bad skill in club and can't even use maces, so don't try it except for skillup. And as already mentioned, RDM can't skillup staff.

We RDMs have dainty hands, all the better to cast spells with. You can't ask us to pick up dirty rocks off the ground and throw them! :spin: Yes, level sword and dagger, blah blah.
