Last night I fought maat for I think the fifth time. I dont mind fighting him a lot because prior to this fight I have never spent a single gil on him, infact, farming the testimonies provides 100xp a kill and rubies nearly evertime. Its not a horrible way of farming, the rubies go for 15k a piece, sell fast, and I can get two or three an hour. I acctually think the maat fight is a lot of fun, it acctually requires strategy.

Since I didnt mind fighting maat multiple times, I decided to try and make a point. I hear so many RDM complain about millions of gil required to buy gear and medicines, so I went on a mission to show it can be done w/o any such things.

Here's my character info:
-Hume
-lv69
-equipment
-Warlock hat, tabard, leggings
-Custom Boots
-Spirit Torque
-Phantom Earing
-Moldavite Earing
-Phantom Tathlum
-Zircon x 2 (electrum for convert)
-Dark Staff
-Ryl. Knt Belt
-Red Cape

As I said all pervious attempts cost me no money at all, but this time I just wanted to try to kill him so I used a melon Pie +1. I managed to get Maat down to probably 15% of his HP when I hit 49mp. I have no doubt that one more Aero III would have killed him. I calculated my damage around 2,300-2,400 so he was near giving up. I did make a few mistakes however. Paralyze/bind/blind I found to be pretty much useless. Bind may have worked better if I used it while he was running toward me, but then a sleep 1 just worked better. Right after I did chainspell I accidently did a sleep2 instead of aero3. And when I ran out of mp at the end I didnt try to sleep, i just tried a low lvl nuke, i did aero regular, If I had done maybe a lvl 2 spell I probably would have been ok. Another thing, all previous attempts I had a wind staff, but this time my friend was offline and couldnt borrow it, I think i did about 339 damage aero 3's and with the wind staff i was in the 370's, that alone would be enough to allow me to win. Also, after the convert I forgot to swap back the INT rings, however I saw no increase in resists or decrease in damage, so for the next fight I would use rolenberry pie instead.

The next fight I was pretty sure I had him beat, but I forgot one important thing, my stoneskin dropped real early, he did a diaga to wipe out blink and ate stoneskin, causing me to take some damage, I completely forgot about converting and I didnt realized I had only 1/2 the mp I needed until I was out. He was at about 1/2 life maybe lower and I was able to do one cure IV and One Aero3 after my convert.

So with all that information I find it highly likely that you can do maat without any medicine at all. I could spend a million gil on the Marine Gloves and wait till lvl 70, the ocean rope along with MP added for that lvl will no doubt give me enough MP to do maat without the aid of even food. So for all you RDM's out there, don't worry, maat is fun and low cost, so long as you dont mind fighting him a few times to figure things out.

It depends on our luck (= whether Sleep/SleepII land or not) but I think it's possible for us to defeat him without medicine.

In fact, I only ate Pumpkin Pie +1 and a bottle of Yagudo Drink when I challenged to him. No medicine was used.

However, it is hard to expect whether we're going to win this battle or not because it is mostly dependent on our luck as I said. We don't really know the result of the battle until we finish it.

Most of us don't want to waste our time here. I myself don't like to run between Jeuno and Temple of Uggalepih for another testimony. Therefore, I would advice younger red mages around me to do whatever they can to increase their chance to win.

'cept me

I'm only using medicine as a last last LAST resort. Mila loves a challenge

I love that, too! I believe RDM is the job that makes what they call "impossible" -> possible.

Well, I beat maat. I brought along a vile elixir with me just incase I needed it, I did. I'm confident that it is still possible to beat him without medicine, but at this point I just wanted the pressure of having to beat him gone. Also some LS's i'm looking to join require maat to be beatin, maybe I will try again sometime without medicine to prove my point.

I don't know that you need to prove a point really... My Aero3's were landing plenty hard enough to kill him without using medicine, I just wanted to stop farming testimonies. I had no nuke resists and going with the worst case scenario (7 Aero3's @ 457 each), I would still have ~300mp left (enough for 2 more Aero3's and a few sleeps.)

I just wanted the fokker dead and to not worry about it anymore, that was worth medicines to me.

it took me 4 tries. first 3 times. i made all sorts of new macros and stuff. because i normally don't have aero III, or sleep I macroed. so all my battles i felt like a fish out of water. 4th time i tried. i decided i just treat him like a high level quadav that i normally might solo with my regular macro setup. i buffed up for a melee battle, ate a meat mith, ran in there. slept him. dispeled till his buffs dropped. then attacked him, i think i was hitting him for like 80 dmg not including en spell dmg, and i had a joyesuse. so when he 2 houred, i used mine to heal myself and keep blink and stoneskin up. and then i converted some where in there, and started nuking. we where really hammering away at each other. i used a vile elixir +1 in there some where because i nuked all my mp away. it was pretty intense.

i was so happy i beat him my way. with my macros instead of all the guides that people have out there.

imo luck has a lot to do with it to :o .
