Confirming a Rumor

Hi guys

One of my THF friends said that certain keys could allow for either a mimic to pop. If the mimic pops and we kill it, it is suppose to drop a coffer key. Has anyone even confirmed this? Or is it just a rumor?

P.S I think he said it was a living key that he used to make a mimic pop

Supposedly this is fact. I've never spawned a mimic (lucky me, but I don't wanna jinx it), and so I've never killed a mimic. But so far every thf I know that's killed one solo or in group has gotten a key drop every time.

So I'm willing to bet it's more than rumor.

So you go to oz a high lv job /thf so the max lv you can get for your thf is 37 then open a coffer and youll either get lucky or get to kill a mimic which gets you a key for the next coffer anyway?

You can't use thf keys to open a coffer unless your main job is thf, so if you went in as xxx/thf you'd have to use a standard coffer key to open it... meaning you'd never get a mimic.

And every mimic I've ever killed have always dropped a coffer key.

Personally, I don't know. I've only ever owned two living keys, and the one I used on a coffer didn't get me a mimic. I did, however, get weakened. So, eh, maybe. I dunno.

I prefer thieves' tools.

O.O you're level 65 and have NEVER spawned a mimic???? That's so wrong. So very, very wrong.

I've never killed a mimic, so I'm afraid I can't comment on the question at hand. But I'd just like to say that i hate skeleton tools and will never use anything besides thief tools ever again.

Okay, I've read about this a little bit more.

So far from what I gather mimics will pop on living and skeleton key, but I cannot find out which one gives a higher chance. So does anyone else here have any more information on this?

Oh and the reason for actually wanting to pop a mimic is because well after 5 hours in Monastic Caverns/davoi fighting for a stupid key for my LS's DRK AF we figure just spawning a mimic and killing it and getting the coffer key would be a much better option ^^ Hence why I want to know highest chance of getting a mimic.

Mimics always drop coffer key to it's dungeon.

I've resorted to trying to get mimics when helping out friends with af coffer keys, also if you get a mimic and kill it, coffer repops 5 minutes later (or if it isn't killed).

me as a 75 thf/nin and my 75 blm/whm friend are enough to kill one, to give an idea of difficulty. It has a strong poison to look out for and very large aoe stun to start fight, (taru's might die if they're close). If you have a lvl 65-70 group, i might say a pt can do it, except you might get aggro from surrounding mobs.

I think at lower lvls, thf tools might spawn mimic more than keys. Since i think thf tools are more effective as you lvl up, i would say living keys are the most effective for mimic.

This happned to me when I had my old character I made a Mimic pop (forgot how tho) killed it and got the key I forgot what the key is used for....

Ive only gotten 1 mimic using Skel keys, the rest were with Living keys and ive owned and used about 4x as many skel keys...

Using a living key on a coffer is pretty wastefull because you will more then likely break it and get weakened. Then you can't open another coffer untill the weakness wears off. Would just stick to Skeleton Keys.

yea dont be a cheap ass stick with skeleton keys u will never get weakend but will get mimics on ocasion ... i got 1 last night killed it and got a key so as a thf in the low 70s bring some antidotes becouse that poison is realy strong lol

lol -- I'm a cheap ass. I use thief's tools, and haven't once been weakened or gotten a mimic with them. I've failed before, but not much -- not nearly as much as I did with skeleton keys, at least in Oztroja.

I think people seriously underestimate thief's tools, and I will continue to use them :P
