Yes I got elitebar from one of the ads on this site. This happened a few months ago, and appears to be happening again. The ad is:

www.freevegasclubs.com/opm/?from-banner2

I hope the admins will fix this quickly. These continual problems really make one not want to come to this site. Or at least offer a premium membership with no ads. I have no problem paying toa void this annoyance, but IE is required at work.

technically adware/pop up ads arent virus's. but in my honest opinion it does the same thing. an what i have found out is that most adware is placed on your computers in the form of cookies. ( cookies is a way of your computer remembering sites you visited)

another thing some dont know is when you download a pop up blocker, you are in fact down loading a program that produces pop up ads. only thing is it does block other website pop ups, it just fails to tell you its giving you its own pop ups ads. plus never download anything you see placed on a banner, or that comes from a pop up ad. this will only make thing on your system alot worse..

the truth is most anything you download from the web now will have 3rd party programs on it. doesnt matter what it is. download, games, music, video clips. most time then not it will have these 3rd party programs. now even AIM come with site tracking cookies..

Firefox is great, and can be your number one defense.

Other than that, search for the following programs and seek out forums for them:

Spybot: Search & Destroy (HIGHLY reccomended)
Adaware (This is the lavasoft product, it's really great, and picks up some stuff spybot doesn't)
AVG Antivirus (I believe the website is www.grisoft.com Free antivirus software that is pretty good quality for what it is)
HijackThis (In case you think your browser has been hijacked, most likely IE. This produces a logfile (Txt file) that has a scan of some registry keys. If you don't know what to remove, post this on a good forum such as 'net integration' (Sorry I don't have the URL on me. Been a while since I've used it) and try and get some feedback)
CWShredder (This gets rid of the "Cool Web" registry keys. A form of Hijacking)

Good luck!

This website has pop ups? Never seen them and I'm using IE most of the time (Firefox when I'm bored).

This website doesn't have popups, just banners.

The only problem with Firefox (not that there is really a way around it) is that it only blocks images you tell it to or, if you download the ad blocker plugin, images from sites you specify or set as part of a regular expression. Firefox is a lot safer, though.

Most likely the spyware isn't from this website. I would wager you have some trojans on your machine that just pop up unrelated ads whenever you use your internet browser. That's the only explanation I see for getting pop ups from a site that doesn't have pop ups. Try out Zonealarm. I use that all the the time now. Blocks all pop ups and banners. Plus, it lets me know whenever a program on my machine tries to access the outside world along with acting as a firewall.

actually adware programs take into account what websites you visit the most. then on some versions they will stick a adware program onto your favorite website. pull up the website. an bam a pop up.

on the other hand some websites allow 3rd party programs to be installed on there websites for a small fee. that way the website gets money to stay up an running, an there 3rd party people get there advertisment out..

I had to reformat my computer awhile back from some adware/spyware I got from these forums. I've since gotten Norton antivirus and internet security installed. Love it. No problems since. I know it was from this site because I use my laptop for every website except these forums for convenience.

I got an adware virus from a banner on this website about two months ago.

Yes, it is actually a trojan. The virus slips on to your computer through a security hole in IE involving Windows Media Player and cannot be removed by any spyware removal programs such as Ad-aware or Spybot. To get rid of it, you need to use an anti-virus program such as Norton.

The virus is *very* annoying because it installs like twenty spyware programs on your computer in less than a minute the second you connect to the internet. The spyware then spams you with so many pop-up ads and random garbage that that your computer becomes completely unusable. You could manually remove all the programs and run Ad-aware or whatever to regain control of your computer, but every time you restarted, the programs would reinstall themselves on your computer.

You can fix the problem by running an anti-virus program. To prevent it from happening again, either switch to Firefox like I did, or download all of the Microsoft critical security updates (which you should do anyways).

I got assaulted by spyware from this site today. Took about an hour to straighten out and reminded me to install Firefox. Don't view these forums without it.^^

I had this problem a few months back. I guess the site owners haven't resolved the issue with whoever is doing their banner ads.

In any case, I've switched to Firefox too. It's a great browser. I remember trying out Mozilla a few years ago and remember it as a pretty horrible browser. Firefox/Mozilla has since come a long ways and I'd say it's just as good, if not better browser than MSIE.

Voila!

I use IE, I have no clue what your problems are, but I get no pop ups, no adware, no viruses, nothing.

I have a Yahoo bar that blocks pop ups, and a M-W.com bar for looking up words real quick. I use Adaware every once in a while to catch the 2 or 3 things that make it in.

If you go into IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced you can really customized how weak or strong your IE can be. I have a lot of sctrict options set after going through what you guys are going through on a different site.

Firefox is just IE's little jealous brother.

Ad-Aware is for Adware. You have spyware, which is what Spybot - Search and Destroy would take care of.
