Yes, last night I accomplished an FFXI first:

I stole a GOLD beastcoin from a goblin.

That's right, fellow thieves. The goblins in Newton Movopolis have gold beastcoins to steal. The Goblin Packman is a confirmed steal, but I'm sure all the similarly-leveled gobbos have them, too.

hrm. Are the goblins sight-only and what level are they?

Sight only, hide works on them. VT-IT at level 62, so they're in the low-to-mid 70's.

Yay, I got one too  They were VT still at 67 in Bibiki (Hobgoblins aren't direct goblins I guess, but they're close enough).

Urm ...

Your topic makes it sound like such a huge deal ... but ... thieves have been stealing gold beastcoins from non-CoP beastment for ... as long as I remember ;o ...

Yeah, and until CoP, high-level goblins had beastcoins to steal. Not gold beastcoins. Not mythril beastcoins. Regular beastcoins. 90 gil apiece beastcoins. So yes, to thieves, having the value of your steals increase by a factor of 100, is in fact, "a huge deal."

Uh? You can certainly steal Mythril beastcoins from Goblins, I did it all the time back in Kahzam. My THF isn't high at all, so I have no idea about Gold Beastcoins, but I'm positive you can steal Mythril.

Guyincorporated meant the high level goblins, like the ones in Cape Terrigan. If you steal from those you'll get a regular beastcoin. It'll be a plus while I explore there but I don't think its life altering or anything.

Um, that may be true of Gobbies, but you can certainly get Gold Beastcoins from high level Yags, Orcs, Quadavs. I witnessed a 65 drk/thf steal gold beastcoins over and over from Yags in castle oztroja during a skillup pt. Since they are sight only, hide works fine. I really don't see the big deal about being able to steal from the gobbies.

You're right, I don't understand, but I do play as THF on occasion, even if its not my highest job. I also use it as sub in skillup PT's or coffer pt's on occasion.

Anything better to explain yourself with? Fact is that gold beastcoins are already pretty damn abundant pre-CoP, what's so "impossible" or special about stealing them from CoP mobs?

Voila!

Because they in Moval they drop the 100k a stack silk(Seraph), and in combination with stealing gold beastcoins you can make a pretty hefty pay-off.

Stop hating.

1. Totally unrelated.
2. Not mentioned at all by the original poster.

Now I'm not saying that stealing gold coins isn't good gil, on the contrary when lvling off beastmen or doing skillups or key huntes occasionally I've wished I was thf main or played a job that allowed being a thf-subjob. What I'm saying is that even currently as early as late 50's lvlup PTs you could already steal them.

That wasn't his point.

His point was that they could never be stolen from Goblins. Now, with the exspansion, they can.

The reason why this is a big deal to thieves is because at high levels Steal doesn't succeed as often as you like. So when you fighting high level goblins (or even certain other high level beastmen) you see the animation trigger and you expect a gold beastcoin from such a tough monster... and you get a crappy beastcoin. Its a big letdown. I curse any high level beastman that only yields a beastcoin from a steal. Every time it happens.

the problem is, these gobbies dont get killed much so you cant really make constant money stealing from them. also, coffers in newton have pretty high mimic rate and you cant attempt to kill them cause theres mobs at all spawns.

I botched a coffer in newton...actually just got weakened, not mimiced. I was shocked. The downside...the coffer moved some place that was completely inaccessable. In fact, I actually got myself TRAPPED in the zone while trying to reach its new spawn location (pretty bad level design imo), because I went off a ramp and was in a (large) area where I could not escape. I assure you, I had more than enough time to check every possible exit; there were none. The only way I could get out is for those round platforms with the 2 gates to shift, but I don't know how to do that. (Firesand in those machines maybe? Anyhow, I didn't have any firesand) I ended up having a buddy blackmage come in and rescue me. (I was down to 3 shinobi-tabi! )

And whats worse, this path that I thought would bring me to the coffer deadended at another round gate-patform and I STILL couldn't get to it!

yea firesand opens the gates, also some people in my ls think that they might eventually change on there own like the vapor in atthwah and fire spouts in ifrits

Can you give me some more details about the shifting mechanics? I would put in firesand to a machine and it just shook the area...the gates didn't change. do you ahve to put sand in all the machines in the zone or something?

Hmm was there a couple hours one night with a bard friend trying to get plat beastcoins for my goldsmithing. I brought a stack of firesand, and we duo'd the VT gobs. (thief's were the biggest pain, haha) Opened 3 coffers and stole like8, didnt get any interesting drops except a coffer key for my bard friend.

for the firesand, just toss one in the furnace and teh gate should change, if not just try again. We eventually had to leave cause he died when he said he wanted to fight the red gob (Goblin Swordsman i think) but regardless we pulled it solo, the other 3 gobs followed it like they were in a PT...

I've done my fair share of wandering in Oldton/newton movapolos, and I have the oldton map - I assume the first thing in the newton coffer is the map for newton - what else is in that coffer? Do you have to cross the gates to get to it? What about the levers in the room with the goblin ashman? If you flip all 3 levers and go across there from oldton-newton, does it lead to the coffer area? I've managed to get around to the other side of the gate without using firesand - just a long run with invis (none of the bats seem to agro). I've also missed probably 10 steals on the VT gobs...i want platinum! I guess I'm asking a bunch of stuff here - talk more about your newton experiences. Oh, and where is the zone to Mine Shaft #whatever?

Kastel

First thing is the map, i opened a few not sure if there are coffer items there. To get to mine shaft zone, you have to pass through the area in Oldton where you have to hit the 3 rusty levers and cross the bridge. As for coffers, some pop in places where you need to cross that bridge in oldton to get to, while some i had to drop down and couldnt get back up to that area without going around. For working the furnaces, just wait until Gob turns, then Drop a firesand in the furnace, the gates will change. Then just use tonko, if you get aggro just hide ;p
