While lvling my alt the other day I got into a minor squabble with one of the paladins in my linkshell. The person in question is a lvl 52 pal on midagrdsormr which will remain nameless, anyway he started complaining that he did not have a party in 4 hours or so, and I said some times I wait long on my monk without a static trying to find a pick up party can be tough some times he then answers back well your mains a monk no one like them.... I was a lil angry at that remark and asked why ? He told me they are the worst dmg dealers and that his paladin out dmged a monk at lvl 45 I tryed to defend this by saying maybe the monk was not eating food and did not have good equipment but it didnt matter anything I tryed to tell him he would not listen saying how he hates monks now because he thinks they are worthless and a waste to a party and so on and so forth so I ask all monks please keep your gear up to date and eat some food.

Yes, its sad sometimes... Lots of noobs playing this game, I saw one level 50 Monk with the same equipment as I have at 37.... (I actually had somewhat better equipment - my STR is +12 without food, his was +6 or something, he had less +Dex and less +Acc than me too.... He was wearing level 30-40ish armour.... ). I've played with Samurai I outdamage with a single fist, Paladins I can pull hate off with normal, non-berserked hits... When I play my Warrior subjob I've come across Monks who hit for 5-10 damage per fist (while my greataxe does 50+ per hit)..... Thats one reason I am quitting this game - its no fun to play with a bunch of noobs (which most english speaking players are).

Anyone and I mean anyone who labels MNKs as crappy damage dealers is a complete and utter fucking idiot.

To be fair, when I first started the game (Everyone was basic job), monks seemed like the crappiest job in the game, getting out damaged by the warriors easily. I was with this mind set for the longest time, until I had an Eldieme party at 55... my perspective of the world changed :spin:.

i know it's a little tough to know how some jerks think of MNK's. but try putting ur anger or sadness aside, and just ignore that PLD.
and... by the time that PLD hits 66, if ever, he'll know the importance of MNK's. and of course, ignore his invites and laugh at him. ;)

Monk is a tough job to level however.
I would almost suggest for all people aspiring to become mnks to be thieves first at least until Treasure Hunter 2. Make some money so that once you hit LV 40+ you can keep up to date with gear.
Mnk AF is really good. So once you're in the 50's you should definitely be going for those.
I feel kinda sorry for Samurai and Dragoons because their ws just can't compete with ours, and we're not even the creme of the top damage dealers. (RNG, BLM)

I'm glad somebody else noticed how saturated with newbies FFXI has become. It is a HUGE problem. Most people that play this game take advice as an insult, and won't play any other way no matter what. I was lvling one of my alts in boyada and the newbies even reached pass level 50+. I asked this BLM to help heal some and quit using higher tier black magic that our mobs aren't weak against. He said "No you f**ing idiot white mage sub is just for an mp boost, don't tell me how to play my job." And these types of situations are extremely common. The mentor thing square did is a complete sham. Most newbies will not take advice from anyone if its different from the way they play then. Most of my friends refuse and are terrified to level any job under 60 as am I because of this problem.
And your PLD LS friend has a very very deluded view of what monks are. MNKs really-really do the most damage out of all the melee classes. Its in my list of favorite classes and I'm sure you can show him the light sooner or later.

Makes me wish there was a Job-based Limit Break at 30 you had to accomplish to get flagged for levels 31-50, sad but almost neccisary, it would be a test to help determin if you knew your role..

The worst thing is seeing that level 50 monk with out dated equipment get invites faster than a level 50 monk with the best equipment possible.
About the comment about most english speakers being noobs...I agree. However, there are english speaking players that are not noobs and please remember that.

Show your Pld friend my parse from when I was level 56 in boyahda (should still be on here somewhere, page 1 or 2). I easily outpaced a well-geared drk (mainly because he knows how to play his job, and didn't go all-out damage w/ soul eater, etc.), and kept pace with a ranger until she switched to guns.
Monks are the kings of melee damage over time, and are one of two jobs that can reliably close both level 3 chains for good damage (light at 65, dark at 71).

There is a rich galka monk/warrior in my LS lvl 50. He has The best gear possible, a few million in gear including cross counters. He has yet to meet a tank he couldn't pull hate from. This includes when he was 49 with a jp pld in an xp party. His WSs are almost as good as my SATAs(Of course when they're not some of my better SATAs :p ). He's outdamage everything he's come against, although he only faced one ranger ever(not the best rng in the world though).
The pld you know really needs to come away from the game and do some research.

Ok, I think we've established that yes, monks do very good damage. However. I have 2 chars in the 50-60 range, rng and monk, and when I play my rng, I am very very hesitant to pt with monks that I don't personally know. At this lvl, equips make a huge difference on monks, and I have pt'ed with too many monks who hit (whiff) for 10-15 per fist because they haven't kept their equips updated. It is very understandable that other people have the "gimp monk" stereotype. I think the original poster just wanted to make sure we don't reinforce it ^^

Exactly, lately I have noticed many under equipped monks and im not saying they should have all the main items at lvl 40 but they dont give an effort to try and obtain them it seems. I had a party yesterday when I was on my paladin and the monk was wearing lvl 14 rings lvl 16 ear rings lvl 30 armor not eating food and this was at lvl 40 ><

At around 50, how much damage should Monks be doing. I want to know if I'm atleast doing ok damage. My equipments are here http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/profile.xml?14750.
you just be doing above ok dmg wif yer current equipment, i would guess you dont have accuracy issues as a tarutaru ? if yes, then get yerself 1 or 2 sniper rings

I actualy felt that it is time to try something else until I have money for all the equipment.... I am lvl 42 and was thinking of getting mt Thief to 25. By that time I might have accumilated some gil to buy the stuff, or then at least use it to farm.

Not to brag or anything, but that PLD is nuts. I'm currently 55 and have only been outdamaged one time by another melee. That's when we started on Robber Crabs at 52. Well, there was one other time. When I first got Raging Fists and was closing a Fusion chain in Gustav with 455+255...The DRK went Last Resort + Souleater + Berserk and promptly died to Jet Stream shortly after.
If you take the time to get the best gear possible for us (Minus Cross-Counters, i'm getting by with the Hooks and I love them. Spartan Cestis coming up in 3 more levels.) you'll have no problems at all. I preach so much Monkism to my linkshell, everyday a new person is leveling it "for fun" or "I want to see what your talking about". Makes you feel really good.
I think the main problem with the n00bs/newbies, what ever you want to call them. Is they are basically all leveling whores. They level, and level, and never give time for earning gil or buying/finding new equipment.
This is at least what I have noticed.
And your PLD friend is a moron. Just tonight I was keeping up with a RNG one level lower than me just fine. MNKs are awesome.

By all means he is not a friend so everyone stop saying that lol and your correct on that alot of people just want to lvl and lvl and not farm to get even semi decent equipment

Yeah I had a similar thing happen to me. I was looking for a party and it was me, another mnk/war, thf/nin, whm/blm, war/mnk I believe. I decided to get a pld/war bc he was the only one searching around our lv for a party.
Well when I invited him and he accpeted he looked at the group and then said "U have no dd, so I'll look for another party, bye."

The way I see it is this
When I first started the game I wanted monk and was very poorly equiped because of the fact that I was still a n00b because the job of monk is opened to everyone and their mothers. Put it this way I thought mnk/rdm and mnk/drk would be the best combination (Way wrong now IMO). Took a break from monk and started lvling Brd which is at 59 now. Stopped that and came back to my mnk and have made a good impression on most people because of the fact that I am now decently equiped & I will not lvl without food. (still not the best I possibly could be, still want the kote) and I am no longer considered a n00b. Atleast I think I'm not. That could be where the monk is recieving the bad name. mnk/war do not have to open any advanced jobs. So that person could just have lvled mnk and war where as others lvl three or four other jobs previously. This is just my view on it though.
