Frankly, I knew about this game when it was released in the US... I never gave much thought to it. My friend is one who has played many different MMORPGs in the past. He had bought this game and told me to go buy it so we could start playing online together. So I thought nothing of it and went out and bought the game. Little did he tell me how addicting these stupid games get.

Anyways, I've been playing this game since October of 2003 and up to this point, I've enjoyed playing this game... Not saying there's nothing wrong with enjoying a game, but when you've put as much time towards this game as I have, you'd tell yourself it's time to pull out and get on with your life. They seriously need to put a disclaimer on thier box that says the following: "WARNING! This game may contain effects similar to Cocaine! Extreme caution is advised!" To make a long story short if you're one of these pathetic people (like myself) who spend countless hours a day playing this then I have a solution for you:

I'm a bit bitter right now as you'll probably when you read this solution...

1) Start a new job as a Red Mage.

2) Waste all the time you have in the world leveling that sucker like there's no tommorrow

3) Once you've got your RDM to 70, fight Maat and lose 20+ times....

4) If you have any rationality left, something in your mind should click and tell you that fighting Maat is based solely on luck and not skill. Hopefully your frusteration will get the best out of you and it should bring you back to your senses.

If you're fed up with the bullcrap that RDM's have to go through to pass 70 like I am, then this should be your ticket out of this game. I've wasted way too much time strategizing out ways to defeat Maat... I've studied out numerous techniques mentioned on this forum, waited until the time was right for a certain day (like darksday for sleep to be extra effective) and still CANNOT beat this piece of s**t Maat.
Everybody else I know has been able to easily beat Maat 1-2 times with their other jobs, but the RDM's in this case really get screwed over.. This has taken all the fun out of this game and I've finally come to my senses. There is no point in continuing this game.

Building up frusteration towards this game is the only way to break yourself free from it if you're one of these addicts like I am. Just keep losing with that RDM 10+ times and you'll finally have a legimate reason to leave this game...

Just thought I'd put my two sense in. (I apologize to anybody if they find this offensive in anyway. I have so much rage in me right now as I'm writing this, I do not mean to sound negative, it's just that everything in FFXI is designed in a way to where you always rely on parties, and having to solo Maat is a huge turn in events.)

I beat Maat in 4 tries (mithra). Elvaan friend of mine beat him in 2. In every single one of my losses I never felt like the fight was impossibly hard; I was disappointed at the loss of course, but I knew that just a few tweaks here and there would definitely give me the win.

Honestly I can't symphatize with you. I never got any more frustrated with Maat than any of my friends who fought him with various jobs.

Depends. Some luck may be involved in the fight. I beat him at 10th try. There are times when Maat has used asuran fist at 4min when I woke him up with aeroIII, totally freaked out of course. There were time when my sleep failed and he casted waterIII and StoneIII repetively which is bad luck aswell but of course my sleep fail was the reason. There were times when he used chainspell and used asuranfist while he was casting waterIII now this one was nice -_-; The time when he used blink/steneskin/cureIV in this order while he was on chainspell mode surely was annoying.

All in all, after doing some serious upgrade I beated him in a very odd, interesting manner. Yeah I have not used chain spell to beat him, but a kiting style. Totaly unreliable, unapropriate but sometimes it is good to try fighting in different way and get some surprising outcome.

Did you try the sleep, aero III method?

sleep, aero III, sleep, aero III, sleep, aero III until maat is dead.

coached a couple ppl through it already. Just make sure you have a dark staff and enfeebling torque to decrease the chances of your sleeps getting resisted.

Beat Maat on try #16,

Other thing you can do is to practice on those Ruby Quads in Beadeaux. I tested my Maat macros on them until I have them memorized (I created a whole new set of macros just for the Maat fight). The Ruby Quads are a lot easier to sleep and can be silenced, but are otherwise a good Maat clone. You can get RDM papers from them too...

Try once every other night. Its a stupid fight. Even if darkstaff does help with sleep and I personally don't think it does as I shouldn't have problems with sleep anyway and you should never HAVE to buy a darkstaff, you'll get it.

Weeks after I beat maat I went back for fun and he was cake. Its just a stupid fight and everone knows it. He's not a rdm more of a mnk71/drk60. There's a lot of good endgame 71+ stuff to get, don't quit now.

I already told you how I beat maat, he is not hard. However you cannot solo the test mobs in the temple and you spend 500k on a sword when you should have spent it on something for INT. You said yourself you cannot land sleep, if you cannot then you will not win.
