View Full Version : What keeps you playing, your motivation?

I have been playing pretty consistently since last December, but recently playing FFXI seems more of a chore than anything else, I am level 70, close to 71, and everyday I have to force myelf to log on and exp. I am so close to 75 that I have no intention on quitting now. I am not part of an HNM LS and my current LS has a lot of mid 50's+ and up players so we cannot go to Dynamis or hunt HNM's etc so basically when I sign on I don't have much to do but exp or help other LS members. So basically its pretty boring and has been that way for a while. I know I am not alone in this, as many of the people I exp with are in the same boat, I am curious what keep you playing consistently? This topic is more aimed at high level players, new players much like myself were instantly addicted and had a great time playing the first few months.

To be uber-leet dammit. You should get a new or at least another linkshell. The lowbies are holding you back man.

If it wasn't for the goofy Tarutarus, i'd be bored and quit already...

yeah man, go apply for a HNM LS, you shouldn't be a babysitter.

Lotta fun with the LS. But one thing me and my static does is we only grind 3 nights a week, 4 if we're lucky. Take breaks from FF and do other things, real life things even. That'll help keep the motivation up since you're not going, "Oh I have to grind tonight so I can keep going." You'll get to 75 soon enough.

There is one high level NA LS on Fairy you might want to look into that does Dynamis...Reinhart is the leader I think...I'd have to verify that. Might be something to look into. After all, everyone loves Bards.

I feel the same way you feel outaru. My motivation back then was my RDM AF and SL...and now that i beaten it and obtained my Afs, my LS and friends outside my LS kept my motivation in this game...then people I know in the game started quitting one by one slowly, and the people in friends' list started disappearing...

Then I had another motivation (try to do a bit of high end stuff) and joined an HNM (sorta) LS...it was decent but not what I was really had expected. I used to play a lot...but atm I'm not hardcore enough to pass sleep and go to work the next morning just to camp a dumb HNM for a benefit of someone else in the LS (not to be mean...but i'm not sleep working just so that some dude I'm still sorta talking to in an in-game name basis will become more uber). And the fact that I'm not really into having all uber items didn't really match what the high end FFXI has to offer(Wow, you got kraken club...while you were obtaining that, I knocked up a few women I met down the street).

Atm...the few things that are making me still play this game is 1) Fight Maat 2) sorta baby sit my LS (really help them w/ all their AF so that they don't have to end up like I did where the high level people in my LS ignored my pleas for help), 3) CoP and 4) Getting Sidewinder for my RDM

Definitely my friends.

I've been waiting on friends to catch up with me for months, I haven't levelled my main job in 3 months really. But it's been a great time for me. And now that everyone is all caught up, and we're starting to level together, it's just a blast that doesn't seem to end. And knowing that I have these same people and same good times all the way to 75 is what keeps me wanting to play constantly.

This game has more content than you could ever realistically get bored with if you play a rational amount of time a day. I find that most people quit this game because they just lack the right kind of people to play with, which is very unfortunate.

I wanna do the zilart missions with my friends and when the new expansion comes out I want to be able to do it with them as well. Some of them are lvling new jobs with me and some have found new life in the game in doing so.

I want to be able to be high enough to go to most areas with a couple of friends and kill shit, even if its not for exp we can try treasure hunting in areas most people don't farm.

That's a couple of things that keep me going. The lvl grind is just something i suffer to get there.

For me it's been the adventures I run into. I went and leveled to 54 and there just go from Jeuno and pick a route to walk threw, just about every adventure or place I wander was great. I never had a big intrest to level to 75 instantly, but of course I've been raised around quite a few different cultures. Add on top of that my Hopkido, Judo, and training with various weapons the philosophies they all implied all basically summed up to the same thing.

It isn't the end but the path you choose to take to it. I wanted my path to be one full of people regardless of their current status and really taking in the beauty and everything this game has to offer. So far I'm enjoying it very much, I've made friends and have had quite a few leave but I'm enjoying this game very much and with all I've enjoyed at were I'm at presently I continue to look forward to the new sites and people I've yet to meet or see.

That is what my motivation is. Besides I've had a great time doing various stuff, NM hunting without even being a THF has been a blast. Especially since I figured out how to determine the NMs next spawn location for NMs like Leaping Lizzy (12 times done and all 12 times it worked perfectly), you can just feel the stupified look on the THFs faces when they find you there already killing Lizzy time and time again after they just spent flee getting there.

Well right now my motivation is to find that Castle Zvahl Baileys coffer since I got 60 and my key last night, and then beat up the Orc NMs and get my AF surcoat. After that, my motivation will be to raise my fame since I've been rushing through the game and couldn't even accept the quest for the Zvahl map o_O

And after that, get as far as I can until WoW comes out, and then hang it up for awhile, only to come back a every so often to see that everyone passed me, and catch up again.

Its very interesting reading the various replies and one can note that the opinions vary by level. I can totally agree with the folks that said their motivation was their AF, that was mine too, but that came and went. Next for me it was rank, at the time I was 60 soemthing and I was like wtf I am only rank 5, so in 1 week I organized parties and became rank 9, I can be 10 but as I eluded to in my ealier posts everything to me at this point is a chore. My #1 motivation for this game back in the early stages were my work friends, they all played and it was fun as hell, but they are avid gamers and saw the shortfalls of FFXI before me and quit. It was hard continuning to play when they quit, but even after they left I still had fun playing so I continued playing.

There are a lot of things I have not done yet that I would love to try, but I can see at least at this current stage that I will never be able to do some of them, some require 18 70+ people. Its not like when I sign on I am like hey I am going to go try x thing today becuase more than likely x thing requires a high level party, a huge amount of gil, or simply put a requirement I cannot meet.

Some of you mention to be elite, are u willing to put in the months or even years to become elite in a true sense? That movtivation drove me for a while then I looked into what it takes to have truly uber gear, and well "Thanks for the offer, but I will have to pass."

Reguardless of it all it comes down to one thing, are you having fun playing, for me the answer is no. That faded about 5-10 levels ago. With so many games, not just referring to MMO's, why spend time playing a game you are not having fun playing.

One last comment, some people mentioned about not being in a rush to get to 75, I think that was my downfall, I feel into the trap of keeping up with everyone and quite honestly burnt myself out. I wish I could have back my 51 days of game play > most people work in a year

In my opinion, I think it's because of the simple addiction and the fact that you've worked so hard over your character just to put them in hiatus.

I just recently (ok just a few mins ago) watched the old videos my LS members (who most of the members in the video quit) made when we made some LS events and some funny stuff...and let me tell you...it feels so....depressing I guess. People who you talk to since Level 1 up to like lvl 60 suddenly just disappears....it's like dealing w/ death ><

Alot of people get bored with the game because all they do all day is play FF. I think if you take a break during the day, maybe go to work or hang out at the gym and work out maybe things would change for you. After long hours in the office then busting a sweat in the gym FF becomes a welcome escape for me. FF is meant to be fun, not a chore so I wouldn't abuse it by playing all day everyday. Too much of one thing is a bad thing ;)

AF, especially all those notorious AF3 NMs (LS got beaten pretty badly by Aldetour a couple days ago, myself included).

SL, made an attempt at him a few hours ago, abbandoned it when the PLD couldn't get in the arena -_-; didn't speak to Halver..... :dead:

AAs, Teffie's video of his AA fight looked so... awesome.....

Healing myself to Maat's doom!

Can't forget the Gods and various other HNMs...

I remember seeing a JP WHM in an armor I hadn't really noticed once. Noble Tunic, Peacock Charm, Emp Hairpin, Assault Earring, and Sun Ringx2... /envy

Bastok Eco-warrior.... hateful jellies....

Becoming wealthy enough to lvl one of those elitist jobs (jobs that I consider requiring above average skill to be good at, like NIN). Or getting RDM high enough to be able to solo weaker HNMs...

WHM in an Optical Hat, need I say more?

A few of those will die out eventually... some will be checked off. But I'll find something new eventually an become envious of someone I know and I'll try to emulate their accomplishments... or something like that.

One last thing.... need Kayoto to be humbled....

I have quite some motivation for this game. Couple of goals to acomplish which could take several months I guess. As you can see from my sig my rank is still sitting at 6. I have this goal to achieve everything with my friends so I waited. Meanwhile to make things go smoothly we needed a high level. We had a 69 Pld when we formed up this LS. Now he is 75. He is a JP player who played from release of JP version. He is still rank7 and at 74 is when he achieved sky access which was a couple of weeks ago.

My motivation resides with my LS which was made with group of friends who I could play with during my prime time (euro). We are only 8. Yes 8 of us in this LS. Most of them are past 60s and only 3 members are 70+ includling me and I am the only person who has 2 70+ jobs. My goal is as follows:

Complete Sandoria Mission = Current 6
Complete Windrust Mission = Current N/A
Complete Bastok Mission = Current N/A
Complete Zilard Mission = Current ZM5
Lvl my Rdm to 75 = Current 71
Lvl my Mnk to 75 = Current 72
Complete my sub = 33whm (ugh) 35blm(errr) 35war(I suck) 34thf (yep...) 23nin (priceless -_-;)
Get map for all the area = In progress. Did onzozo yesterday
Start crafting = 57 cooking 23 Tailor ... so ya quite alot
Buy scorpion harness = now this is going to be a pain in the arse
Complete all quests in vanadiel :P
Get all avatars = Fenrir Remains

So far these are my motivation. Most of Mission related things I do with my LS. We do funky stuff like challenging 65+ avatars with 4 of us. Map hunting is fun as hell beating everything get the drops and when we found the key proceed with coffer. Usuall alot of my ls members get agro and when I turn around I find like 4 mobs chasing them -_-; Was hilarious when we were doing our key hunting in onzozo and only to find Lord of Onzozo pop in front of us :P Big thanks to my Whm friend who is 70. Alot of high level whm are inpatient, and they leave to go to an HNMLS for their own benefit. While this one stays in this mild LS without any hope of going to an HNM anytime soon. He comes with me all the time everywhere we go. The only high level whm amoung my friends. His goal is to be a summoner, and now that he is 70, Fenrir is nearing his reach. I will help him in everyway I can. Here... this is where I get my motivation. So many things to do...

I'm only level 30 on my main job, but I played EQOA for a year and got my Monk to level 55 (60 max), so I'm somewhat qualified to answer this question.

In EQOA the only thing that kept me playing were the friends I had made. If it weren't for them, I'd like have quit sooner. I wanted see if the rumors were true about there being class specific armor in Plane of Sky (think AF), but I never got around to that. I also never got my Master Class which was Ninja. :/

In this game, my motivation is to level to 75 (no rush), get the "shinyz" (points to whoever gets that bit ;) ), fight some of the strongest monsters, explore Vana'diel and learn more of it's lore, and to make more friends. Oh, and to see what's new with Chains of Promathia (can't wait!).

Way back when I was a newbie, I had just unlocked the Samurai job with my level 30 Black Mage and was leveling Sam in Konschtat by Gusgen. Just turned nighttime and a ghost spawned next to me while I was healing... it aggro'd. I run for the zoneline and a Blm out of nowhere stuns it, and Firaga IIIs it. I switched back to Black Mage the next day and want to learn the spell that saved my ass.

Also, a newly acquired goal of mine is to be able to craft Opaline Dress for a close friend of mine... only 28 more levels to go~ >.>

Leveling... I'm trying to get to 75.

Heh, finding parties can be hard at time, and de-leveling sucks... (I deleveled today -_-, damn you Eldieme Necropolis... lvl 68 now)...

So, now I'm armorless, I have no pants... but what can I say? All I can do is get shafted over and over again on my trip to 75.

After that's over with, I'll do the same again, with another job.

I just set little goals for myself and do my best to accomplish them. After hitting 75 I wanted to finish up the story so I achieved rank 10 in every nation and finished up the zilart missions. I also did some of the larger scale quests the game offers.

Then I worked on more things like trying to complete all of the BC the game offers, with the recent patches this task just got bigger which is great for me.

Eventually I was invited by a small group of players from a wide variety of linkshells to go on friday night Tu'lia god fights. This was hardly even the highlight of my week, just another thing to do. The various HNM & Gods in Vana'diel aren't that hard unless you bring along a troupe of monkeys. Use your head, make some more friends, and try to do more than just exp groups. If you don't group with EN players a lot, try talking to some of the JP players about helping out with various tasks. Or try making your own linkshell with the players you group with. Eventually your current LS will catch up and they can come along as well.

Sometimes I'll just farm money and buy a bunch of ridiculous equipment, like trying to get up to 1500HP as a taru bard or getting the best melee equipment I can.

Recently i've been playing Ballista a lot and trying to become a great player in that aspect. Soon I'll be working on leveling a variety of subjobs to use in higher level ballista and as mainjobs in lower level.

I was also invited by our server's top HNM/Dynamis LS and will be working on conquering all of the HNM & Dynamis areas as well as upgrading my equipment.

Promathia will be released soon, and I will be eating up all of the content that offers. Just another thing to do on my list.

And yet, sometimes I simply will just take short breaks and do other things. FFXI isn't life.

If you seriously have to stop and think about something to do, just log off for a while and come back with a fresh mind later.

I'm still young in the game and deciding what I want to do in the game... I had thought I'd take WHM all the way, but now am truly enjoying playing THF/NIN so I think I'll take that through Genkai quests.

My LS rocks too... Its had ups and downs, but the long term members like Ichy, Meyoh, Gavin, Omecle, Vashts... and so many others make my day so much better in game :)

I am really taking my time and doing things right, gotta stay grounded and keep your head in real life as much as in game.

3. The desire to whip major booty. I WILL roast all these gobs, tonberries, and all that other trash that killed me 70-esque times in all my days. Rwar!

4. The desire to keep on going and become a legend on my server. I have no idea how I'll ever do this, but if I keep trying, there's a better chance of doing that. ^^

5. Because .Hack screwed up my brain and because not enough of my friends play RO.

I think I'm done with this game itself, I dont like to put my self though the BS japanese players create, why do they have to make simple things such as xping so complicated? I've never seen and english speaking player saying "ENGLISH PT ONLY!!!" or have rude comments on their bazaar line like "[English] [No Thanks] [Leave]" I mean WTF is that? These people have no respect, what they do is called racism. I've never seen an NA player have rude comments against Japanese players either specially in public search or bazaar lines.

Farming in games like EQ is more ideal, you go farm at 2AM, there is very few people. If I do that at 2AM there will be a million JPs, thus its worse because obviously theres more of them than NAs.

If I go camp an NM, it doesnt matter at what time, if that NM drops anything valuable there WILL be a JP camping it. And as you all know they get spawns first and there's no way to compete with them on claiming NMs, you just have to be really lucky. There should be a 50/50 chance between you and a JP claim a target buts its more like 90/10, favoring the JP.

Crafting, JP's Powerlevel through their crafts since they already have millions, they inflate AH prices to the point where its almost impossible to advance through a craft and ever hope to make the money back.

Conclusion? They ruined the game for me.

I can't craft.
I can't farm.
I can't camp NMs.
I can't get PTs.

They stop me from doing EVERYTHING.

Atleast I learned my lesson, Online RPGs on another country's server = NO.

It's really not hard to see that we are not welcome in this game.

Hmm, I might as well

To see what I haven't seen yet. To fight what I haven't killed yet. To wear the things I always see from people. And most importantly, my friends. They keep me here, cause without them, the game will turn into EQ for me. And I don't want that. Not that I didn't like playing EQ back then, but with me having no RL friends that's playing it, it was hard to keep myself motivated with it. Sure PvP was fun (I was from Vallon Zek if anyone that played EQ is wondering, but it was getting gayer and gayer day by day, minute by minute). That's what keeps me motivated. Also, I love the challenge of having a small LS and trying building it as well.

Hmm..hard to say what keeps me playing or addicted should I say... I guess it would have to be the thrill of other jobs that i've never put time and effort into. I think the most boring thing is to be level 75 and fight HNM's every day, it's not like it would be fun...just plain. Basically the same thing everyday. For me, leveling a few jobs to 60+ and searching for a PT and saying that I can be either of these four jobs for the PT would be more fun. Then when I go help friends I can use a differen't job everytime instead of using say Thief75 and doing the same stuff over again. When I get bored, I always sooner or later come back D;/
