Alright, i know most of you are going to think, why isn't this in the Samurai board? Well, this is a question for everyone, not just people who play the class. I've been interested in playing Samurai for a while now, but i want to play a class that people like, and invite into their pts. My question to all of you is, what are your views on Samurai's and are they even wanted in groups post 30? Thanks for your time :biggrin:
I like SAM who can do 2x skillchain in a party with 2 different people, and not a SAM that spam enpi, and the team has to wait for the TP master's TP... >_>;
As for SAM, their real strength comes after lv30.. not before.. >_>; Meditate is what they are for.. but I don't know, hard to even find a SAM for PT these days..
For me, I choose SAM over DRK, but to find a good SAM is hard, most SAM spam enpi like no tomorrow.

The differences between different melee aren't that great up to L50 (I'm still in the fifties), but sadly the truth is that samurai is inferior to most, perhaps even all other melee....at least when it comes to dealing damage. Sure sam might be a bit underrated because it can usually participate in two SCs, but if you only have one SC, the extra tp won't help you very much.
Anyway, if you're looking for lots of party invites, forget sam.

sams are great, the problem is you gotta know your role
YOUR the one that makes the renkeis, discovers what the mobs your fighting at are weak to, and decides what the best dmg on weaponskills/ damange on burst ratio is
beyond that in later levels to be good you NEED to invest lot's of time and gils into your equipment... properly equiped sams are awsome, cheapies are half assed and don't much benifit the party
To add to Thark's post:
You may think "ahh I am fighting crab, monk can't create a good ice/lightning chain to it, we will just do an one-off SC"...
Don't think that, I have had parties with JP, where we do Fusion on beetles, for monk + samurai, then Distortion for samurai + ranger... it was actually better that way, it's almost impossible to squeeze in a MB in the short interval of a 3-men skillchain(my friend did it, though.. but it was a Holy MB, which mean sorta short cast time, compare to BLM).
Skillchains are for Magicburst, not for melee to own the monster, that's what make a team, right? Melee create a single chance for the mage to do great damage every now and then.

Thanks for the replies ^^ but one more question....how does their damage stack up later on in the end/endish game?

One more thing to reemphasize SAM usefulness. Do not underestimate the value of the extra skillchaining. They can skillchain with anybody who is ready and produce most all effects so that your mages can keep the bursts rolling. Experienced PTs can keep skillchains flowing through a SAM on demand.
Just FYI, SAM isn't about putting out the most damage with other jobs. RNG, MNK, and DRK are the higher damage jobs, but don't have the same level of versatility as SAM (until 60 if they /sam).
Now, as far as how damage actually compares to other jobs early on (pre-30), you dont see a really big difference in damage output if you are well equipped, but later on, I just don't know. I stopped leveling SAM at 43 to start up other jobs to see what I really wanted to play to 75. Maybe another more experienced Samurai can help you with damage output.

I personally love GOOD Samurais in parties. 2 Skillchains per fight, with 1-2 magicbursts off each really speeds up the killing. But you gotta organize the PT, set up the skillchains, make sure everyone in the party knows whats up, etc... If you take the time to do all that then Samurai show their true potential.

well a normal pt usually is a healer, tank, blm,or brd , and then 2 DDs usually one with backup voke. So yes, you will get invited as a DD.

sam was my first real higher level job. I took it to 60 then went back to thf. I stopped playing as samurai because i felt my damage output really dropped. In the beginning as sam you outdamage DRK so easily. but later they were hitting almost twice as much as me ; ;
In the end, maybe i should have invest more gil into more item, but i liked big damaging numbers. Hence, thf, then ranger, now monk too, haha.
Now though, after playing with higher level samurai, their Lv 3 WS are very nice damage. and I have some HNM drop samurai sword, i might pick up this job again someday ^^

As a blm a pt with a sam in it is godsend. Unfortunately, people don't utilize sams as often as they should =\

thf ain't a dmg job, your there to place the hate, and @ the same lvl as me, i'll blow you away on total dmg, despite the big number

D: sams have some small issues from 66-71.. namely the fact that everyone loves lv3's and drks at 65+ and sam cannot create any without the help of a 3rd person (except sam can finish with Gekko for lv3 dark if the PT wants that.. it works nicely sometimes, particularly if the sam's got THF sub)
End game.. if you're in HNM LS you'll be a spirits whore full time through the fight, or simply subbed in for spirits / fui gekko to put hate on someone, etc.. They've got their uses, and aren't entirely too bad from what I've seen and gathered.
Kitty loves sams.
I could break any job down in one sentence and make them seem like trash, too ( ̄。 ̄)y-~~

no shit a MNK can outdamage a thf. But to say a THF isnt a damage dealer is just plain ignorant.
