FFXI for Dummies - My dealings with N00bs, Dorks & Dipsh*ts.

Hi! Brand new journal from a relatively new person to this board.

Mind you, I am a nice person, but completely sarcastic...in a funny way. These are my adventures in dealing with the n00bs and dorks and your basic garden variety asshats while adventuring in Vana'diel. I like most noobs. Most noobs are just that, new to the game and figuring it out. NP. We were all noobs at one time. N00bs on the other hand are those that have been playing for some time and you are amazed by it because they dont seem to have the intelligence to remember how to breathe without machine support, let alone figure the complexities of pressing buttons on a keyboard/controller. The latter are the n00bs I am referring to.

So sit back, grab some popcorn and maybe some kool-aid and be prepared to be amazed at the blatent stupidity of some and annoyed at the idiocy of others and lighthearted at the simple and sometimes complex comedic genius of those around me.


To start you out with a taste of my Vana'diel life:


Some random dude who spammed a shout 3 times as he was running hellbent for leather from a Wight: WARNING!!! 3 WIGHTS 2 BANSHEES. STAY BY THE ENTRANCE UNLESS YOU WANT TO DIE OR ARE AT LEAST LVL 30+!!

There ya go. Now I know a lot of people complain about the stupidity of people in the game and have clenched their teeth in frustration a number of times. Sadly, the only way to cure stupidity is to neuter the older stupid people so they cant make younger stupid people as well as neutering the younger stupid people so they cant grow up to make more younger stupid people and eventually they would all die out.

Then again, if we didnt have the stupid n00bs, who else would we get to attract the attention of the baddies so we can run on by without fear of being aggro'd?!?

Hrm...I was hoping this thread would have more WAR's who won't provoke/WHM's who won't cure, but instead it has new people to the game being given intentionally misleading information.

One question, however; what conversation took place before "Are you sure the wights don't aggro"? It seems odd that someone would speak to someone else for the first time in a tone that indicated that person had told them something before, you know?

I actually find that to be rather funny. The old bait and lure trick,you should always be careful of any mob ina new area that you go to. It's called observation.

It seems to me that the person who was mislead was quite observant. You can't check a monster to see if it will aggro you, so s/he observed that it was dangerous and asked someone if there was a chance of aggro. It's easy to laugh at, but how would you feel if you were the one who was mislead?

So you automatically run past a mob after someone says it doesn't aggro? You don't observe other peoples reactions to the mob? I would never venture out into an area until I've watched what other people do and how they react to a mob in the area. Also, if you're in an area where parties level up monsters are going to aggro, it's should be common knowledge. Also if you read the original poster's post you'd notice that someone had just run to the zone saying that everyone should stay away unless they want to die. I'd think after being warned 3 times that someone would stay away. That's observation.

If the person asking the question assumed they were going to be lied to, they wouldn't have asked the question. They asked the question hoping that a (seemingly) experienced player would be able to give them an answer that would help them. Instead, the experienced player intentionally mislead the other player in the hope of benefitting from their death.

Secondly, any area where you can fight a mob is going to have mobs that will aggro. Certain mobs will aggro, certain mobs won't. Given that the asker of the question was supposedly a "n00b", it's entirely possible that they'd not yet encountered any skeletal monsters up until that point, which is why they asked the question in the first place.

To be completely honest, (even though I have been)my point was never to defend the person who ran out and was killed by a Wight; I agree, they should have been more careful. My issue lies with the person who intentionally gave someone misinformation in order to benefit from it. That's not funny, it's an asshole thing to do.

Ok, to clear up confusion for those of you bent at me:

This particular guy had shouted "Do those monsters aggro?" about 3/4 times after the first guy ran by with the warning. (He had also been cured by me and someone else after he was aggro'ed by a Giant and trained him to where everyone was waiting for the wights and banshees to disappear. Luckily for him, a party voked it off of him).

Anyhoo, the first time he was told yes and no by several different people.

The second time he was told YES, yes, and HELL YEAH by several different people, including myself.

The 3rd time he was told YES THEY AGGRO NOW STOP ASKING!

Then he /tells me "Are you sure the Wights don't aggro"

...and the story continues along the lines I've told it.

The story isn't very funny when you have to include each and every damn detail and it gets rather longwinded when having to do so and rather than post a tedious post where the humour gets lost, I shortened it to the part where it got interesting.

Now Pepsi and Gestahr, you can unknot your shorts. I'm not an ass and more than once I have died and deleveled myself trying to help some random person that needed help because he caused a gob train or bat train etc.

If you found my story to be offensive, then I apologize and will ask that you stop reading my journal since I will be posting more of these types of stories, starting with the next post.

I trained a Giraffe (Dhamel) and was having it beat up another Giraffe while I started whomping on a 3rd. I guess the 2 giraffes fighting decided to move a bit so all 3 were hovering over me and someone tried to voke off one of them.

So I said, "Dude, what are you doing?"

N00b "I'm trying to help you but I can't cast any spells for some reason."

Me - "Dude, I'm a Beastmaster, it's ok."

N00b - "A what?"

Me - "Beastmaster. I can charm animals into being my slaves and make them fight for me."

N00b - "I didn't see that job when I started this game. I must have gotten an old version because my guidebook didn't list beastmaster as a job."

Me - checks the dude and sees that he's a lvl 13 BlackMage. "It's an advanced job"

N00b - "An advanced job?"

Me - "Yeah"

N00b - "Do they have other advanced jobs? Or is it just Beastmaster?"

Me - "No, they have maybe 6 other advanced jobs (I list the jobs)

N00b - "Wow, that's cool. Where do I get the quest to get an advanced job?"

Me - "You can't get the quests unless you have a job at 30"

N00b - "I don't make that much. I only work part time"

Me - "!?! >.<"

N00b - "Is that Japanese? I don't speak Japanese, sorry."

Giraffes are done fighting so I type
/em sicks the Dhamel after N00b and says "Tear him to pieces boy!"

N00b - "NO! DON'T MAKE HIM ATTACK ME! WTF???"

then I type
/em casts IQBooster on N00b (I really cast Aquaviel on myself)
N00b resists IQBooster. BrainDrain is in effect.

N00b - "I was just trying to help because I thought you were being attacked. You don't have to attack me.
N00b - "Stop casting magic at me and don't make your Dhamel attack me either or I will cast back on it and kill it. I'll leave you alone."

Me - "[Please use the auto-translate function.]"

Albeit I do admit the second story does sound a bit far fetched, I don't think you realize how stupid some people can be on our server. I don't think she's done anything to be considered an 'ass', she just hasn't gone out of her way to be nice. No one says you have to help someone new, hell, the most Japanese people hate us because we're newer to the game. It's just the same mentality. :)

These stories actually do happen, sorry to say. Granted, you might not think people this dumb play the game, but there are. I, myself have NEVER read the guidebook except for some basic stuff here in there in the first chapter or so for game setup and keypad config.

As a matter of fact, I got into an arguement (or rather a few people got into an arguement) with 2 players about person vs person play. They said there was no such thing and we tried to explain to them about Ballista and the teams playing against each other and they called us liars and idiots etc., because they didn't get any 'ballista disc' when they bought the game.

I don't hate people new to the game. I explained the difference between noobs and n00bs any why the latter are a source of fun.

Another case point, a friend of mine was lvling his SMN last night as he just recently unlocked it and was running through E or W Ron with carbuncle chasing behind him and someone started yelling at him to stop running. He asked why and they told him they couldnt catch up to him to voke off the blue cat thing so he could get away.

These things not only happen to me. Continue to think I am an ass if you must as I have a buddylist that shows there are 3/4 times the people that don't. As I stated, you don't like what you read here, don't come to my journal. Plain and simple. If you want to come here just to flame, you will find your efforts without merit.

Nahi, relating to your Dragon, I don't know the name/loc of the person, or if this is even the person you're talking about, but there is one NPC who'll give you a larger list of names. The only catch is that he charges something like 10,000 gil and I'm not sure if you can quest it.

At no point did I ever say that I am in need of gil nor did I ever say that I dont have other ways of making any. I farm and I fish and I craft and I do quests and missions. No I might not have a ton of gil, but right now having 20K (possibly more as I have yet to play today and not checked the status of stuff I have on the AH) and not in need of buying anything makes me feel all warm inside.

As for my newbie status, yeah there are still quite a few things I don't know about the game and still learning as I go. Again, there's a difference between being a newbie/noobie and being a n00bie, ar at least in the way I classify them.

Like gestahr said, what the hell does job lvl have to do with anything? Maybe I should stop pl'ing people or helping people with Rank quests and stop having a life outside the game.

What lvl are you by the way? You never said nor does your profile show any info judging by looking at your info box next to your post. For all I know, you might be lvl 5WAR and lvl 75DIPSHIT. Just because you say that you are higher lvl, doesn't neccessarily mean that you are.

First off, being lvl 40+ does not mean they lose their sense of humour once they get past lvl 39 nor does it mean that you've met every lvl 40+ out there. I know a good number of lvl 40 (and 50 and 60 etc) who ask me to do "the Taru dance" as well as knowing a good number of lvl 40+ Tarus that do it themselves.

Not much to report lately...been sick, then moved to a new house and helping my LS with various tasks.

Although there was a goof in Meri Mountains that was telling me that I could not fight the dragon for the DRG job again since I already unlocked it >.< and then proceeded to call me stupid and retarded *sigh*

Hence he followed us around from Meri to Sandy and then to Ghelsba and wanted to join our pt so he could "help" kill the dragon >.<

This kind of journal I'm not really sure if it should exist. Just from start you can get an obvious feel of why. Even though you are making N00b's the butt of your jokes, the jokes themselves are quite harsh to be doing. Even though some people can be pretty bad and idiotic, the manner and taste in which this thread was made is much worse.

Also seeing the previous posts to this thread, I have to say
Nahimana might want keep her rebuttal in a cleaner manner. I have no second thought in reporting language or actions intended to belittle others on this forum. Same I'd have to say toward Ithaqua, you got pretty close on your posts as well.

I will admit the first one when you explained it more, the joke made more sense. Some of the last comments though I could of done without. The second one is a little tougher to really see as a joke, to me it really is just a counter to the characteristics you claim to be.

With more detail around that situation for your second insult, I could see a possibility that the second player started to "Roleplay" sometime in the middle of it. Ofcourse weather he was Roleplaying or not needs more detail around the situation.

Not to mention I thought you said your focus was around n00b's and not newbies/noobies. However it is very clear on a couple posts that you are also insulting newbies/noobies by your own definition. First and obvious one to come to mind is it seems you calling the player that was chasing Carbuncle thinking it was a monster and not a summons a n00bie.

If a player in W/E Ronfaure made a mistake like that it seems they are most likely a newbie not a n00b and yet you still relay his action in the same distaning manner as you did the n00bie. All that and obvious anger from an opposing post does not make you appear to be a "nice person" it seems quite the opposite.

Re-reviewing the thread again, I have to say the definition of n00b you state seems off from what your actions are showing. It seems a clearer definition would be that anyone that doesn't know as much as another is a n00bie.

So as a curious venture I want to know what stuff you know of the higher levels. I'd love to see what knowledge you have of Dynamis, max number of people, the hourglasses use. How about HNMs, Cursed Armor, Abjuration Sets, Relic Weapons, upgrading relic weapons?

After all if you are not a n00b and yet a more accurate assesment of your definition by your actions would then state you know everything about the game. That is truely the only way you'd know more then anyone else about it right?

So as a curious venture I want to know what stuff you know of the higher levels. I'd love to see what knowledge you have of Dynamis, max number of people, the hourglasses use. How about HNMs, Cursed Armor, Abjuration Sets, Relic Weapons, upgrading relic weapons?

After all if you are not a n00b and yet a more accurate assesment of your definition by your actions would then state you know everything about the game. That is truely the only way you'd know more then anyone else about it right?

Sixty four players top i think? The relic weapons are special weapons that are upgraded by using dynamis money. Byne Bills etc. etc. etc. Once Relic weapons are fully upgraded they recieve a special weapon skill like the sword is Knights of Round from Final Fantasy Seven. Cursed armor is synthesised from a lot of HNM drops and the scrolls uncurse it at the church. There are Six different sets i believe. There is no Real term for HNM, but i refer to it as a once a day pop with the special exception of certain Notorious Monsters. Kirin drops an osode to all stats and an abrujation. Serket drops venomous claw used for scorpion harness etc. etc. etc.

But sorry again on the flaming when the person hasnt even experienced the annoyingness when you can barley chain with a good PLD at 52 because hes taking so much damage on robber crabs :3

And there are way too many out there. I am just sick of everyone anymore, and it's funny how all the n00bs can never come up with anything better then, "hey, fuck you," when you start to say stuff to them. >.<

What I hate more than anything are people that think they know more than everyone, and even tell you how to play your character, and the damn game in general. People like that are just...how can I say it? Hm, I am gonna have to make a word up for this one... um... scorpomptrilustrant!

Nahi, I do understand your definition on n00b, and I know quite a few of them (I wont post tales because is your thread, not anyone elses). Ignore Siya, just dont answer his/her "vokes". Keep the funny posting, even if you have to change stuff that actually happened.

I've only ever been able to get one pt with JP's, and what happened? I died almost right away, and they started saying stuff, and then I was booted. O.o

If you get invite from jpn PT just ask:
how long is gonna last
where they going to fight
what other jobs will be in the PT
if there is anything you need to bring (item, spell, silent oil, altep crystal, etc)

Before accepting invite, inform them:
How long you can play, or for how long time you will have food, tools, etc.

what u are supposed to have but dont have yet, or are not carring with you ie: dispel, erase, fenrir, utsusemi, kabobs, next level scrolls, pies and so on

and 5 more things:
Dont expect a /befriend at the end of PT even if it was a great PT
Remove LS if they not wearing one
Dont expect to be chating with them during/between fights
Forget about one nice and long smoke break, actually forget about having breaks longer than going to BR while mages heal MP
Most if them difinitly know more Areas of Vanadiel, and camps that are now forgoten. If they are gonna take you to a place where you are not familiar, bring the basic non-mage survival kit (Warp Scroll, Prism Powder/Tonko tool and silent oil)

Now if you are farming... thats another story. Now back to Nahimana funny tales, right?

Just a small point I want to point out: While it's always funny seeing a new player trying to provoke off a Carbuncle that's running after someone...

That player does risk himself/herself to try to save you. No, you didn't need being saved at all, and the player really didn't know much about the game.

The fact still remain that they were willing to endanger themselves trying to help you. Think about it: It was his/her first time seeing Carbuncle. What they knew is that someone was running away, with a monster following them. In general, that means that the person is in danger and try to zone safely. The poor warrior was brave enough to try provoke off an unknown monster to let you live.

To me, a person like that is very noble. It is the kind of player that will become very helpful, gentle and nice to everyone. Personally, that is the kind of players I want to play with, and definitively undeserving to be called a "n00b" in my opinion.

I don't need someone telling me what an asshole I am, when there have been numerous times where I will just help out some random low lvl person and power lvl them without being asked. I have also traveled from Sandy to Sauromogue to Raise someone because no-one else would/answered his /tells.

I also tend to buy/bring extra stuff for the people I party with. Not unusual for me to trade off a stack of kabobs to my damage dealers or pumpkin/melon pies to the mages. I've also left parties I've been in to change jobs when our pt was in danger of disbanding because we couldnt find a 6th for damage or healing.

I go out of my way for LS members, friends and pt members just because I like the game and I like to play and I genuinely like most of the people playing it with me.

I have a HUGE buddylist that numbers well over 100 and I constantly clean it out and remove people that I do not remember. If I am thought to be such an asshole, then I hardly think most people would befriend me.

I look at it this way: Ignorance is usually something that is not purposeful and something that can be remedied by learning. We are all ignorant of many things in this game. To be ignorant simply means to not know of something. Stupidity on the other hand, tends to be blatent and purposeful, and I have no tolerance for that. Sometimes both are humourous, and I post those stories.

If I come off as an ass, then I apologize, but dont sit here and flame me when I know very well a great number of you flamers do the EXACT SAME THING, both online and in your daily lives to others.

Now with that being said, this is the last I will speak about it. As I said before, you can choose to read it or not. Since some of you have found my stories to be distasteful, you will know to avoid this thread in the future. Plain and simple.

How to make Instant Taru Toejam or A Nahi bonehead moment...

Couple days ago I finally get around to lvling my RNG. With a friend of mine and we decide to go hit LaTheine (both of us lvl 9) and pt up and smack about rabbits and sprouts. We come across a BLM who wants to join so we said sure and the 3 of us banded together and started looking for Orcs. We were just running around like a bunch of fools with no sense and the whole time here, I'm playing without sound cause I have a headache (I was bored silly so I was playing FFXI instead of laying down).

So anyhoo, my friend David knows I dont have my sound on and is picking on me telling me to answer my phone (like he was calling me) and we come across this Orc...I take AIM and POW! The fight is on! Then another Orc decides to join the fray so we're casting and smacking and I'm shooting my arrows like a Taru possessed and the orcs turn on me and start smacking me up. Next on my screen I see, "NAHI MOOOOOVE!" and I said, 'It's ok, they are doing little damage and missing' then all of a sudden I got hit and my almost full life bar goes down to almost empty and I was like WTF? Then my screen goes whitish for a sec and I see, "Where'd she go" and I was like "Where'd who go?" and BLAM! I'm dead. While we were fighting the orcs the BLM seen what was about to happen and was spamming <call1> to get my attention but it got swallowed up in the battle scrolling so David tried telling me to move in as few words as possible, thinking I'd have a clue and say "What?" or at least move.

Evidently Bloodtear spawned behind me and thumped me before some other high lvl RNG was able to pull him off.

And there you go...Instant Taru Toejam.
