View Full Version : Camping Minstrel's Coat

I'm going to be camping for Mistrel's Coat this weekend, as was wondering if anyone had any firsthand experience or advice on the endeavor.
Questions of note:
- Is Novv heavily camped? I wouldn't think so, since only BRD's have a use for the coat.
- Any idea what the drop rate is? I know I can get a group capable of defeating Novv, but the tough part would be to keep them around for a 2nd or 3rd attempt at getting the drop.
- Allakhazam doesn't mention his respawn rate... any idea how long that might take?
- Realistically what's the least number of people one should have to take him down? I've a bunch of friends my level (62) and I don't want to depend on high-level help.
I'll post my experiences here after this weekend.. thanks for any info anyone is able to offer!

Novv probably won't be completely uncamped - because he also drops Siren's Hair, and I think that sells for a pretty penny. Still, if there are any other campers there, see if you can alliance with them with the agreement that you're only interested in the Minstrel's Coat.

Killed it 3 times w/o coat or hair :( We did it with a blm74 and a thf74. The NM isnt tough the problem is to spawn it lol
Good luck~
I camped this NM for 8 hours without a spawn. During that time there was only a 75nin/thf camping... but they only stayed for an hour or two before leaving.
i guess you just have to get lucky and hope he spawns within a reasonable amount of time.

He's a lottery pop of the surrounding sahagins, so you have to kill off the placeholders. Just sitting there waiting for him to appear out of thin air, you'll be waiting forever.

the two NMs there (Novv and Yarr) are lottery Sahagin that pop instead of Lagoon Sahagin. Note that there are only three *3* Lagoon Sahagin in that entire room.
After the NM is killed, there is a 2-hour timer in which it cannot repop again (2 HR Lottery NM)
After the 2 hour timer is over (which is usually is when you get there unless somebody killed the NM in the last 2 hours), it's just a matter of getting lucky and having the NM pop instead of the Lagoon Sahagin.
From my experience, this NM is not that heavily camped. If you have a good party, you can also camp Charybridis (drops Joyeuse) at the same time, since the Manta's are on a 15 minute repop timer and there's only 2 of them.

which part of SSG is this guy in? i mean which key/coin do you need to get to the spawn spot?

i was under the impression that Charybridis needs an alliance to fight. are you saying 6 Lv 75s can kill it? i know of a PLD, RDM and a certain BRD that would die (many times over) to get Joyeuse.
Collector of (relatively) obscure but useful Key Items: Crimson Orb, Portal Charm, Rhinostery Certificate, Paintbrush of Souls, Tonberry Key, Moongate Pass get!
care to explain what they do and/or how to get them? i only know Paintbrush and Moongate Pass.

Everything he said but the drop rate is really sparatic. Out of the three times i've killed it i've seen the coat drop twice. But out of those three times it never once droped sirens hair. I have only seen competition there once and it was after we had finished. So best of luck to you on the pop and drop -

care to explain what they do and/or how to get them? i only know Paintbrush and Moongate Pass.
What they do:
Crimson Orb: opens the barrier to the deepest part of Davoi. For the part where you have to reach for genkai 3, BRD AF3, Overlord Bakgodek (sp?), etc. Other people can go through the barrier once you've opened it.
Portal Charm: opens the three mage gate in Inner Horutoto by yourself, and you don't have to be one of the three mage jobs to use it either. Other people can go through the gate once you've opened it.
Rhinostery Certificate: allows you to enter Toraimarai Canal via the Priming Gate in Windurst Walls. Other people cannot go through the gate. You don't open it, you pass through as an event.
Tonberry Key: allows you to reset your Tonberry hate in the Temple of Uggalepih. Again, this one is only useful for you, other people need their own if they want to reset hate.
Paintbrush of Souls and Moongate Pass, you already know about, so I won't go into detail.
To get them:
Crimson Orb: go to Davoi and check the Wall of Banishing which you'll eventually be able to open. This is the hardest part of getting the key item, because there is a Dreadnought and two Warchiefs nearby, and it's pretty easy to die when doing it. Either:
a. have much patience with waiting for them to turn their backs, then un-invis, check it, and use a Prism Powder (faster than Invis).
b. let yourself get killed - may wanna go as a level 1 job and get there with oils/powders.
c. sleep them, check, then get out of there with Escape, Warp, Teleport, or bolting for the zone back to Monastic Cavern.
d. bring a party and kill them off.
e. bring a sacrificial lamb along who will get aggro and train them away - preferably without dying, but they're not called sacrificial lambs for nothing. Perfect Dodge and Invincible are good survival methods for them.
Anyway, once you check it (and return to the area if necessary), head north to the watchtower to find Sedal-Godjal. Talk to him and accept his "quest" to get the White Orb (only if you checked the barrier).
Then go around to the four pools around the lower level of Davoi and check each of them. There's one about west center, south center, east center, and north center - north center isn't marked on the map, just follow the river north off the map and it's off to the east at one point.
There are various aggro-capable enemies near each pool except the east one (which if it has anything nearby, is only a wimpy tier 3), but none nearly as strong as the ones guarding the barrier, so you should be able to cope more easily.
The orb will turn into the Pink Orb for the first pool, then Red Orb, Blood Orb, and Curse Orb - at which point you will actually be cursed, though a Cursna will remedy that nicely. Because of the curse, I recommend hitting up the east pool last because it's by far the safest.
Once you have the Curse Orb, go back to Sedal-Godjal again and talk to him to have him enchant it and turn it into the Crimson Orb.
Portal Charm: complete Windurst mission 3-2 (aka mission 8). There are two variants of the original version of the mission, depending on whether you've done 4-1 yet or not (since this one is skippable). If you repeat the mission, you always get the post-4-1 variant.
Pre-4-1: go past the three mage gate in Inner Horutoto (either via someone with a Portal Charm of their own, or actually bringing the three mages), and check the "Gate of Light" or whatever it's called for a cutscene. Return to Heavens Tower and report. Quite easy aside from getting into the room.
Post-4-1: trade three Rusty Knives to Zubaba, and they're AH-able. They're dropped by the Wendigos inside the room if you want to farm them. This variant, as you can see, doesn't actually require getting inside.
(If you do the post-4-1 variant you won't see the plot cutscenes, but you can use the Heavens Tower bard and the Inner Horutoto Goblin Footprint to "replay" them even though you never "saw" them. If you've finished 4-1 and seen the cutscenes from 3-2, you'll understand why you can't get the original version after 4-1.)
Anyway, to get the Portal Charm, you need to have done that mission (either variant) and you need to have traded a Rolanberry to Kupipi in Heavens Tower. In either order. Once you've done so, talk to Kupipi and she'll give you the Portal Charm.
Rhinostery Certificate: obtained automatically when starting the "Toraimarai Turmoil" quest, which is the last of the Rhinostery quests. Most of the prerequisites are quite easy (refer to Allakhazam or Mystery Tour for details on doing them, if necessary), but the final prerequisite is not.
It's called "Blue Ribbon Blues" and involves killing an NM in Eldieme named Lich C Magnus. He's a BLM skeleton mob in a (thankfully) empty room, and can use ancient magic and your typical skeleton attacks. He's also sleepable with Lullaby (by me at 56), so you can solo him if you have enough patience. He'll go down quite quickly if you bring friends at or above mid 50's.
Tonberry Key: it's the reward for doing the "Everyone's Grudge" quest in Norg. The prerequisite for that quest is simply to have Tonberry hate (maybe some Norg fame too, maybe not). So go get a party and kill some wimpy Tonberries in Yhoator to get a bit of Tonberry hate, if you haven't ever been in a party that's killed a Tonberry.
Then go to the quest-giver near the bottom of the stairs in the middle of Norg, get the quest, and do the quest (he asks for 3 Gold Beastcoins, which is a bit unpleasant on the wallet but not hard to obtain). Your reward is the Tonberry Key. The place to use it is not far inside the Temple of Uggalepih, in a square room southwest from the main entrance. The key item is not used up when you reset hate, but you do have to pay a fee in gil to reset your hate (the more hate, the more gil).

On Odin people don't compete over it actually, I don't know if it's like that on other servers.
Just check SSG and look for a comment that says γγ³γΌγγ? Which is the japanese term for Coat.
If not, you can be fairly sure that noone camps it.
So your best bet is going there deep in NA primetime^^

No, a party that is camping Coat won't be able to take on Charbrydis. However, you can kill the placeholders and then if it pops, ask your linkshell to help you kill it. It's not like somebody else is going to notice Charbrydis on widescan and steal it from you.

i knew a lot more about those things than i thought.
i already have a Crimson Orb, BRD AF3 is not in there though, it's before it. originally i thought it was in there too.
too cheap/poor to get Tonberry Key atm. the other two i knew of also, just didn't know the name.

Yeah, I just did AF3 this weekend, and it turns out I was totally wrong about where the altar for that was. Much nicer, though, you don't have the NM orcs to deal with, only the champions/dreadnoughts/etc.
Still, the Crimson Orb is still needed to get into the genkai 3/NM orc area, which is good for skillups if nothing else. (Not to mention testimonies. My AF3 group went on to skillup there for 2-3 hours afterward, and without any lotting, I ended up with testimonies for DRG, DRK, and PLD. All of which I tossed.)

Hmm, is AF3 the body? If so, we had to fight the Orc Warlord before we could spawn the BRD NM ghost. It was blocking our way.

But the Orc Warlord is in an entirely different part of Monastic Cavern ... there's the part where you enter at south center Davoi, and go through there to a path off to the northeast that leads back out to the ruined church in Davoi. That part of Monastic Cavern is where the altar is (where you'd take the south path to exit back to Davoi, instead continue east).
To find the Orc Warlord, you have to go out to the ruined church, cross the bridge to the east, get past the barrier to the south (need aforementioned Crimson Orb), and then zone back into a different part of Monastic Cavern, where there's this huge room with Protectors, Hexspinners, the Warlord, and of course the dragoons and champions and such. The room you have to pass for genkai 3.
So they're in different places. Unless the Warlord has more than one spawn point, or the Warlord/altar used to be in a different place ...

Maybe someone killed the Warlord, cuz I just went to the Altar to make sure I knew where I was going since I'm running an AF3 alliance on Saturday. I found the Altar, but it's a good thing I didn't run into the room because there definitely was an orcish Warlord in there with the altar that conned Impossible to gauge. O_o

06-30-2004, 07:08 PM
There is one harder Orc type in the throne room, but nothing too tough. I think the ones you guys are referring to is the Orc Overlord (Overlord B-somejunk), who's surrounded by other "Impossible to Gauge" orcs ( who remembers names:spin: )
Vilurum

So are there two altars, or two spawn points for the orc warlord (who occasionally spawns as overlord bakgodek rather like lumbering lambert from battering ram)?
Because having done AF3, and having subsequently been dragged along to skillup in the other area (including on the warlord O_O), I can definitely confirm that there is an altar in one place and a warlord in another place. So unless there's a second altar or a second warlord spawn spot ... I don't see it as being an issue.
Remember: the altar is in the first part of Monastic Cavern (the part you pass through in order to reach top-center Davoi), not the second part past the barrier.
Layoneil
07-01-2004, 08:14 AM
in the first area (before the gate that needs to be opened with the Crimson Orb). there's an Altar, that's the Altar you need for the BRD AF3, that's also the part of Monastic Cavern where the Coffers are located.
at that Altar there is ONE - Orcish Warlord, it has True Sight.
---
in the second area (after the Crimson Orb). there's another Altar, to the NW of this Altar is the Orc Crest for Genkai III.
around this Altar are a number of Orcish Warlords, Orcish Hexspinners and Orcish Overlords. all of them have True Sight.
Overlord Bakgodek is the HNM, he's a lottery pop of the Orcish Overlords in this area.

I'm wondering, have any of you Novv campers ever seen him more than once in a single day (24 hour period)? The reason I ask is because last night, my LS had groups taking shifts on his spawn for over 12 hours while others were hunting Hakutaku eyes and Novv never showed up, at all.
Now personally, I've seen Novv 4 times, and killed him 3 times, and never seen minstrel's coat OR siren's hair. Strangely enough however, as often as I've camped him (now at over 50 hours on his spawn), I'd never seen Yarr the Pearleyed until last night, which I saw twice, but I've never seen Novv more than once a day.
So anyway, I realize he's "lottery" but most NMs that are lottery have a repop timer, then it's just a matter of chance if the NM spawns, within a certain time frame. However, Novv seems to be unique in that he doesn't spawn within most lottery pops' 2-8hr time period. That said, it makes me wonder if in fact he's not a 24hr spawn, simply due to the fact that I've never seen him twice in one day, and have had many 5hr~ camps on his spawn end without ever seeing him.
An interesting note to add; we camped Novv from about 7 or 8pm central up until after 8am. Around the time the second maintainence from the other day would've ended, 2 Japanese Novv-hunting parties showed up right on his spawn and started killing placeholders. This furthers my thought that perhaps he's a 24hr spawn, simply because this would've been within the pop window for a 24hr spawn after the maintainence server outage.
Any thoughts? Anyone seen him more than once a day? I'm really fed up with camping him, and I want some concrete information about his spawn conditions, instead of rumors, or mistranslated JP site info.

i personally camped him twice, saw him twice both times. both times were similar
start camping and killing PH's
2 hour later he pops
kill PH's for 2 more hours
he pops again
same thing happened the 2nd time, about 2 hours before he popped both times.

I camped Novv over a period of 4 days:
Day 1: killed all sahagins in the area; 1st pop (hair, no TH) in about 2 hours, but 2nd didn't pop (hair, no TH) until 3 and half hours later; the other worthless NM also popped twice during this time.
Day 2: only killed PH in the southern part; 1st pop (nothing, no TH) in about 2 hours, 2nd pop (nothing, no TH) at least 4 and half hours later; other NM popped once.
Day 3: only killed PH in the southern part; 1st pop (nothing, no TH) in 1.5 hours, 2nd pop (2 hairs, TH2) about 3 hours later.
Day 4: only killed PH in the southern part; 1st pop (coat, TH2) in about 3 hours.

I managed to get a PT to go camp this for me. Luckily they were that bored. We killed placeholders for about 4 hours before he spawned. We were the only ones in the area at first, and then another small party (skill up perhaps..only 3 people) came and were killing some too. We had been there so long and saw neither NM pop, we were going to give up at midnight (my time) which was 20 min away, when we decided.
10 min before we were going to give up, the thing spawned. I got lucky, hehe. He dropped the coat, no hair. I had a thf 2 with me. (Who, after 4 hours, came away with 16 gold beast coins, the rich bastid tarutaru, haha.) I'm glad too, as getting people to camp that was rather hard.
Now if I can just get people to go kill Hurrican Wyverns so I can get my skull..I can finish the Opo-opo crown quest...

A 62 SAM friend of mine, along with a 70-something RDM friend of *his*, offered to hunt the coat with me while we were waiting to do Windurst rank 8 missions last weekend. So we went there, and encountered another party of 70's which was skilling up and testimony hunting there.
We joined forces, I got to witness the glory and power that is a taru SC, and the testimony dropped after about half an hour. About two thirds of them were kind enough to stick around and keep fighting until the NM popped about an hour and a half later - and joy of joys, it dropped the coat (no hair).
So yeah ... I was really incredibly lucky when it came to getting this item, but I'm still very happy to have gotten it. Next on my list, as well, are Opo-Opo Crown items. And maybe a Kard some day, but I'm a bit attached to my Light Staff so I'd likely not use it much for debuffs. And for melee, my Cermet Sword +1 is my current favorite choice (even though it's some 30 levels under cap, unlike my near-cap dagger).
(Incidentally, my luck continued later with the missions. I walked out of Uggalepih with an Unlit Lantern and an Uggalepih Offering, though I did lose the lot on the Tonberry Board.)

Was there 5 hours, no pop, we left, 10 mins later it pops and the other party that was camping (and arrived about 20 mins before we left) gets it. Oh joy.
My LS went with another tonight to camp Chyrbadis (sp), and half of us camped Novv. Novv spawned after about an hour of killing, got the coat first drop

I actually thought it looked very nice and warm and comfortable. Pretty, no - I thought the Royal Knight's Aketon I had before that was *way* classier. But I still liked its appearance better than the Minstrel's Coat, if only because it looked unique (and warm-n-comfy) rather than like a TM coat.
And for the record, the ugliest piece of equipment in the game (imho) is the normal Justaucorps. Bad cut *and* bad color.

I use a printed map when I'm playing... here are some verbal directions. If you know where the gold beastcoin door is, you are practically there. If you don't... from the jungle entrance, hug the left wall. After going down some one-way steps, and coming to the ornamental door, you hang left down a passageway. This goes down into a fairly large room with a lake. I can't be 100% sure on the direction, but I think it's southwest. Reguardless, if you go right/forward at about a 45 degree angle, you'll come to the gold beastcoin door.
After you enter there, go forward. A very short distance away, along the left wall, is the pond area where the saghrins pop. The times I've been there, groups were usually camping behind a small crop of rocks along the right side of that passage.

well-formed pt of 55 might take him - but they would need to be top-notch
directions:
enter SSG from yuhtunga
use sneak if you are 60 or below
follow left wall to the big room with the raised walkway (k-12 i think)
go south-west to an unmarked door
use sneak now even at level 75
check it repeatedly until it asks for a gold coin, then trade gold coin to it to open
go through tunnel and follow left wall into big room. head south then west and look for some rocks sticking up out of the ground. near those rocks is where Novv pops

Check your local AH, under clothcraft I believe. That price tag is why most people want Siren's Hair. As for its actual use, it's used in a number of high level synths, including some cursed armor.

The only item i know of for sure is like Siren's Macrame, desired by summoners i guess. Other than that i think there's some other higher end synths that require it.

Got my coat last night! Camped with SasakiKojiro 75 NIN, Amaterasu 70 PLD, Kleftis 60 DRK, Jericoforsaken 70something BLM and me-62 BRD. All friends/members of my LS.
I camped out this area for a week and a half maybe. Never ONCE did I see other people camping in the room, except for when we showed up. -.-
The other campers were friends of the PLD so they agreed to let me have the coat if it dropped, and they got the NM. We were there for about 2.5 hours, so they must have killed him right before we got there. They gave up at some point, and my PLD left. 10minutes later, he popped and left me my Coat (yay!) AND the hair (double yay!!).
A few days before, I saw a large group of 70+s in the room. I asked em for help, but they were going for Charybdis. Oh well, I hope they got the drop!
Thanks to my fellow Bards for all the great info. Without you guys I would still be wearing the ugly green jacket +1.

but they were going for Charybdis. Oh well, I hope they got the drop!
Charybdis is camped for Joyeuse a 100% drop. problem is with getting him to pop (24 hours) and than killing him (not that he's a super hard HNM or anything).

Finally got the minstrel coat today. I was 1/5 for it.. Camped it on 5 seperate days over the course of 2 weeks. Never seen the NM pop more than once a RL day. Tho we haven't camped it more than 5 hours, so might be wrong. 2/5 for the hair, which was a nice bonus for the friends who came to help (I think it made them keep wanting to come back). Had pretty much the same PT setup for all the camping, which was 75drk, 75sam, 72rdm and 70drg and we had no problem keeping the entire room clear of sahagins. The mobs gave good skillups.. and should be good till about 200ish skill (EP to lvl75). Also good place to get testimonies for drg, mnk, whm and brd.. Must have seen over 100 of those drop in total...

Congrats, i know how much of a relief it is lol.
Finally got this last night after being 0/2 and the last spawn taking 5-6 hours...vowing never to go back.
A friend was actually solo'ing it for a sirens hair and I screwed over there to help.
This was a goal from way back in the day, but depending on how much the new JSE body goes for it might never come out of my mog house ; ; ...not to mention I still think errant is better :p
I was wondering, are most people only getting the JSE feet/body? It seems like AF gloves, opo crown, and errant legs/AF legs are better than the other pieces. I guess the legs could be a toss up, but I don't think +1 chr, +1%mp (+2-3 mp) is worth a million gil more..

Gloves are well under 100K (last I checked they were 65K on my server, I got mine for 85K). Offer 12 MP, 1 more CHR, and a nice little 2 seconds off recast time, compared to AF gloves. You lose 5 singing skill, but as far as I've ever observed, singing skill doesn't affect success rate on debuffs the way wind/string skill does.
(It affects *potency* of songs, of course, but any high level bard can tell you just how much statistical difference even 23 skill - Wind Torque + Minstrel's Coat + AF pants + AF gloves + Demon Helm - will do for your songs. Namely ... 1-2 more points, if even that, to whatever they do, and no visible stat change at all for some songs like etudes and carols.)
I suspect that although singing definitely contributes to song potency, resistance is purely based on the appropriate skill for how you're using the song - wind, string, or singing if you use no instrument. If resistance were based on wind + singing ... a level 75 bard (capped skills, no skill+) would be working with the resist rate of 450 levels of skill. Which is quite obviously not the case.
Having established this, we're talking 4 CHR and an extremely slight effect on song potency vs. 5 CHR, 12 MP, and decreased recast time. My AF's now in the mog house.
As for the rest of the pieces, the head isn't as good as an Opo-opo Crown, and the body is a tradeoff of 2 less CHR and 5 less MP while resting (though you can switch Errant in for resting) for all the various other goodies it gets compared to Errant. Also note that the JSE doesn't have all those big minuses that Errant has, either. And there's definitely something to be said for looking stylish.
The main consideration on the other pieces is whether their benefits are worth the expense. Needless to say, if you're in a situation where MP is more beneficial, pure MP equipment (with possible incidental bits of CHR on it) is gonna be better anyway. Like Zenith. But if you're in a situation where CHR is more beneficial, you'll definitely want to use these ... if you can afford them.
