Enhancing magic skill and certain items determine the base damage of the en-spell (possibly also day of the week and weather).
Enhancing magic skill and the monster's elemental resistance determines the chance the en-spell damage will be resisted and do less damage. Again, I'm not sure if day of the week and weather affect this.
All six en-spells have the same MP cost, duration and base damage, so which one to cast depends on the elemental resistances of the monster you are fighting. Using the right one makes a big difference, especially on monsters with very lopsided resistances such as elementals.
also that number goes up as you level. when you first get the spells I think the base damage is something like 5 at level 50 it's up to 11

I think it's more based on enhancing magic level, cause when I first started soloing after I got phalanx (really later, lv ~60 ; ; ) my en-spell was doing ~7or 8 but slowly started going up as my enhancing magic level capped out. now it's up to 17-18 and refresh really helps out with capping enhancing, I don't think I ever sat and cast enhancing spells.

The cap is decided by enhancing skill. How much you actually do when you hit is determined by elemental weakness by the day. Right now, my enhancing skill lets me do up to 11 with an en- spell. Whether I hit that cap is based of the other factors. Example: If I hit a Thunder Elemental with Enstone on, it will hit for 11, but if I were to use Enthunder, I'd do 0, and any other ones would probably do 5 or so.
