It can be done, I saw pics, I saw the method. But stupid me did'nt bookmark, take a screenshot or actually take the time to do it because i procrastinated.
I'm not sure if it were here or another forum that I saw it in, but if anybody knows how could they PM me with the link/method if they don't feel comfortable posting it in here  :handsdown

Vanahand's not IME input. That's for making Japanese macros. You still can't type Japanese ingame, just have Japanese in your macros.
Sean, I also saw a method to type in Japanese in an IME-ish way. Actually, I saw pictures of it. The person who knew how to do it wasn't telling anyone. >_< If you find out, tell me. Likewise, I'll PM you if I find anything.

IME stands for Input Method Editor. It lets you use an English keyboard to type in Japanese/Russian/Chinese and other languages. 早 (´_㠂?`)
Kawaru, he wanted to know how to get the macros. ;)

i don't mean to be rude, but i must tell u that u have a misunderstanding about IME. (or at least u r misleading others.)
IME is a software module that lets us type in non-alphabetical characters, such as those u mentioned. even w/ the keyboard specific to one of those languages, u still need an IME for input of those lanuages. (i.e. even if u have a Japanese keyboard and Japanese Windows, u still need IME to type in Japanese.) thus, it's more like a "converter" that has to come in between the keyboard and the system. keyboards themselves r mechanically almost the same as the English ones, w/ little keys added for our usability, and native language markings on keytops.
in other words, it's not a keyboard that's making input of non-alphabetical characters possible, but it's an IME, which is a software. and this is precisely why there's no problem using an English keyboard on a Japanese Windows, just like i'm doing. to say even more, there's no preblem using a Japanese keyboard to type in, say, Chinese.
just wanted to say this so others won't get this wrong.

Oh, ok, lol, I was talking about the English windows and keyboard. On this site IME is basically used for typing in Japanese from an English keyboard. Thanks for the in-depth explination though, I didn't want to confuse anybody.

While at E3, Nodachi had a conversation with Square about the IME input into FFXI. Aparent Square is extremely wanting the program inhibited, but acording to sony, the software instilation into the PS2 version is impossible at this time. It's sony's decision, and because of this, they refuse to only have 1 version of the game have the IME, and not the other. Straight from the mouth of a Square rep from jpn.

OK then you saw it too...Someone had multiple pictures of someone typing JP characters in the NA FFXI Client...something to do with using the JP POL viewer and the NA FFXI or something to that extent...

was always wondering why they were blocking people using the NA realease from using IME.

Yeah, at GameFAQs I saw a thread on the FFXI boards about someone figuring out how to type in Japanese on the English version. They linked to a site where the person who could do it put up 15 pictures proving it. It's a cheat site and it was sad to go there looking for this information and the person who has it only giving it to people with paid accounts there, not to mention how it sucks seeing people in LSes you're in asking for fishing bots. >_<
Oh, but this is also different than what you're talking about. From what people have said on these forums, the version of POL you're using is what determines the language for everything. So, with the JP POL client, all menus, NPC text, everything will be in Japanese in game as well as having enabled IME. Several screens this person who can do it on the English version took showed English menus in game and in POL, as well as someone fighting something closeby(with the "Person defeated monster" message in English), and the server message in English.
