View Full Version : Question about FF LS, just curious

Is there something about the high end game of FF that's unsupportive of the close knit "guild"? I come from EQ, where it was pretty much all about your guild. I only started FF about 2 weeks ago, but doing all the research on what the high end game is like, it seems as if there isn't really a close knit guild community in the game. LS' seem to be chat room that people just sometimes hunt things together?

Of course I could be wrong, but I noticed there isn't the same amount of guild web pages, the fierce competition between guilds, the high amount of updates of a xyz guild has killed abc monster.

I was thinking maybe its because of the alliance limit of 18 players? While in EQ you would need every member to go on a raid. While here, you can only have a max of 18 members attend a raid. So it would be like, "Ok we're downing so and so HNM today, lets take 18 volunteers!". As opposed to a GL of a guild calling a raid, and everyone having to drop whatever they're doing to race to the mob quick? Just some thoughts, since thats one thing I thought EQ did well. The sense of guild community was very close, and sometimes the guild rivalries would keep things interesting in game.

It all exsists here. It just seems that because of the fact you can carry around more then one linkpearl at a time some people may belong to 1 or 2 LS.

<---- Ex EQ Player 65 ENC --; quit around when LDoN came out because I was sick of farmin Plane of Time.

If all your LS serves as is a chat... then you need a new LS my friend. Granted you still are reletively new to the game, but even right when you start up, having a helpful LS makes all the difference with your experience.

In the endgame, your linkshell makes or breaks the game. The people who are still playing now and who are in the endgame usually have a fairly large and close-knit ls like a guild (at least on Midgard and from what I can observe). Those who have quit usually quit because they don't have such an ls (either they are unlikeable people who get denied one, or something).

Currently my ls is pretty much all I'm playing for, so yes, you can say it's the centre of FFXI for me.

Guild sites yes... they just aren't that publicised as those in other MMO's I believe. Try looking in people's sigs here for links to ls sites. Fierce competition YES OF COURSE. Linkshells try to outcamp each other and there was one occasion where one ls held Fafnir for 12 hours just to set his spawn on JP time so the other ls's would be less likely to claim it. As for who killed what and where and when.. there is a lot of such information going around, just that it's kept mostly among players.

There are many things an LS can do together. Dynamis for one, and sometimes people take more than 18 people for some God HNMs.

A lot of people think badly of the linkshell system, but it's actually up to the players to make linkshells work like guilds.

Hrmm Fafnir? didnt they do that with Behemoth on your server also, remember reading about it somewhere.

Hehe no NA LS can kill Fafnir on Titan he was up for a good ooo 8+ hours yesterday.

Yeah and about the public boards etc, I havent even really found a reason to start up a message board for my LS, everyone pretty much knows everyone else in the LS, so any information we are passing around gets around to everyone very fast.

My LS hasent killed much yet, Guivere, Vivian, Serket, etc but we are working on it slowly and its very noticable how people start to feel about the LS as harder monsters are tackled, I mean Guivere isnt that hard, but when she was accidently pulled last night and 4 or 5 crabs got aggroed at the same time and the only death that occured was the person who accidently aggroed Guivere I found it amazing.

Agreed, a lot of the sense of brotherhood, kinship and kindred spirit you feel in linkshells come from killing big tough monsters together. ^^/ That's probably why endgame linkshells tend to be more close-knit; they simply have more stuff available for them to take down together.

Just a bit off topic but are RDMs wanted in HNM LSes at all? I'm from midgardsormr and when I get my dark staff and my morion earrings which mite take weeks, ( don't laugh  ) I'll be doing a mad rush to 70 and start looking for HNM LSes (my mog needs start using that dustry type writer for my ffxi resume  )

Go Valor!!! Heya Whren : )

Post 60 your linkshell becomes the largest facet of your gaming in FFXI. Its your connection to HNM fights, Dynamis, getting quick parties, camping NMs for Rare/Ex drops, and avatars. There's really no end to the roles that a good LS will fill. Like Whren, I'm really only playing because I'm in Valor. The members of my static broke... but thanks to the community I have in Valor, I have plenty of opportunities.

Don't worry, Leoric- Red mages are a necessity in an HNM linkshell. We're pretty much the only class around that can land enfeebles on HNMs. Bards don't replace us, because most want Mage's Ballad 1 + 2 and Refresh (especially for fights against monsters like Cassie).

If you have a fairly large and dedicated LS then you could call it a 'guild'. The current linkshell i'm on (BCNMAssassins) are all lv.40+ (level requirement for joining is going to be 50 soon) and we do BCNM with each other all the time. It's a LS composed of 11 linkshells put into one huge linkshell. Having an active linkshell makes the game all the more enjoyable because you'll always have someone to do something with and talk to.

That's good to hear. Thanks Calixxta :) I haven't seen you for awhile in game btw...prolly it's me because i haven't been in jeuno for a week now.

I am enjoying my LS too and would've quit by now if it wasn't for my LS. I really don't do much 'high level' things w/ my LS exactly since they're all low levels (but I tend to do a few high level stuff w/ some other LSes), but it's ironic that i'm still enjoying this game.

Linkshells are pretty much the only things that would keep you sane from pting in dunes, quifim, or khazam. It really helps when you want to find a decent players to pt w/.

I haven't really experienced the so called "close knit" LSes either. I've had some really nice guilds with great team spirit in other games such as RO and AO, but the LSes in FFXI haven't been that good so far. Usually they have too many members, some more or less annoying members or the levels are too far apart, which makes parties with lots of LS members impossible.

My current LS isn't doing that well either I would say. Some nice people have left and I'm the only one in the level range of my current active job.
