I just wanna let you know... EXAMING PEOPLE IS RUDE..., anytime somebody examines me, I change into Bronze Harness, and Bronze Sublingar, and threaten to take the sublingar off and follow them all day until they give me 1000 gil. Unless they have a bazaar, it is rude and you shouldn't do it.

No it's not.
Japanese people just tend to keep it as a rude action because the text we see ['Player examines you.'] translates to something more personal to them [like 'Player stares at you intensively.' or something like that.].
Some of them don't know that we only wish to check their equipment, not 'check them out', like some would say.
I think that is why some JP-players don't like being checked. Unfortunately, some americans have copied the same habit even though they have no reason for it.

I occasionally as a WHM or RDM check people out to see if I can help them i.e. casting cure or protect, especially some of the beginners. I get checked out all the time and it doesn't bother me. In one instance a player checked me out and asked me about my Chariot band how to get it etc. He now has this band and knows how to use it so that has helped him.
it also gives you an idea of what equipment you can have at that level especially if you are close to it and wanting to know what your next enhancement can be.
If you can't examine a person how do you know if they are good enough or (rephrase) whether their attributes can assist you when you wish to create/join a party.
When the NA version first came out, I felt weird being examined. I never got offended when people check me, it's just that I haven't been chekced at all for 2 years and all of a sudden people start checking ^^;
It becomes a normal thing after a while and I don't feel anything being checked anymore (unless they spam it).
Altho I still stick to what I'm used to and don't check anyone so much.

I don't mind if I'm checked, it's a part of the game and there's nothing wrong with people looking at other people's equipment. Although I never check anyone unless they're wearing something I'm interested in. I use the command, /sea <t> to check their levels though.
Also, if you don't like people examining you just turn on the /check filter

I'm fighting the urge to show you what rude is right now.
Seriously, if you don't like seeing the message then turn it off.
Don't start another thread on a long dead subject because if I see you posting next month that gilsellers are evil or you're waiting too long for party invites I'm going to hunt you down and beat you with a wet haddock.

i typically try to avoid /checking jp players since they can find it rude, but most of them are used to it. if i see someone walking by in some equipment i don't recognize, i'll examine them to see what it's called. anyone in my party is free game, i have to know what gear they are using. also, anyone with a bazzaar can be checked.
if some stranger /checks me for no reason, it does annoy me, but it doesn't bother me.
and if you want to /check someone, just do it. i had someone send me a /tell asking me if he could check me. that's even more annoying than the check itself lol ><
rude? no. slightly annoying and invasive? maybe. expected? yes.
and the /check notices can be turned off, if it bothers you that much.

There is nothing wrong with being checked and people that get offended by it are just uptight. I actually never check people because I know that some people think it's rude. I can't believe that someone can get so upset that they end up acting childish about it.

I disagree. Some people do find it rude and there isn't anything wrong with that. It's the way they feel and who are we to tell them how to feel? BUT....there is a filter to turn on and then you'll never know if someone does it. So complaining about and "threaten to take the sublingar off and follow them all day until they give me 1000 gil" is just downright stupid. Makes me want to follow you all day and /slap you constantly.
When I first started playing the game with NA's, that was the first time I was checked often. I found it creepy and rude. It could just be a woman's point of view but it was like a peeping tom. LOL But I filtered it out and never worried about it again. Simple and effective.

i tuned on my filters once, but then i kept finding myself paranoid. every time i was around anyone, i kept wondering if they were checking me or not.
finally i just turned the check notices back on and have never thought about it since lol
i don't know why the put these in the game. either you hate it or you don't care, but there is no benefeit to being told when someone looks at your gear.

Feeling rude about an in game action that effects real life in no way shape shape or form means you are paranoid. I can understand the JP getting offended, but WTF, it isn't rude at all. IT IS A PART OF THE GAME! If anything it is a helpful tool. Ppl are just looking at your equipment not your nude body while you are in the shower at home. There is nothing offensive about being checked. As mentioned above by another person I too will check someone if I think they are at a lower lvl and may need protect or a cure. I'll check my pt members all the time through the pt to check out equipment. I'm mean nothing rude about it and there sure is nothing rude about doing it either. Thats my opinion and you all know the saying.

Go attempt emulating Japanese culture elsewhere.

This thread is absolutely fucking ridiculous. First off, why is it "OK" for JPs to be offended by being checked and not NAs? I think that's a little idiotic. If its "part of the game" then JPs shouldn't get to be pissed over it either. Its almost like some of you guys are like "no no its okay JPs are cool, but if NA does that then FUCK THEM." Really doesn't make sense.
Personally, after playing this game for quite a while I've come to ignore the check comments. I do notice it though when its from somebody I recognize, or when I am spam checked. One thing I still think is rude is when somebody I know examines me, then doesn't even wave or say hi. Some people, while not spam checking, have a repeated habit of examining "acquantances" and not otherwise acknowledging them, which I find extremely annoying.
When I first started playing the game I didn't like being checked either, due to similar reason as JP. I felt like it was an emote which was singling me out, and "so and so examines you" even in english isn't exactly a welcoming gesture. Why didn't I turn it off? Well I'm the type of person where I like to know if somebody is trying to be an ass by spam-checking me or what not. Basically so I can know about people I don't want to associate with. Like I said, it doesn't really irritate me anymore unless somebody is TRYING to be an ass by repeated use of it. For all the prejudicial comments in the thread though I just thought I'd point out how ridiculous it looks.

This subject has been beaten to death already. There are several other threads on whether or not checking people is rude or not and why, most of which are locked. The longest and most civil one is probably this one: http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31560
Why did we bump this thread, which had been inactive for over a year?

Yes I agree with you on the part of repeatedly doing it, I can understand examining someone once, but last night this player kept doing it over and over and over again I just didnt understand it, oh and some guy who I saw standing near the ah, I wanted to see what armor he had b/c it looked pretty cool and he "/slap" me for it o.o I mean seriously some people just take the whole "rude examine" thing too far I could understand if I did it like twenty times but the fact of the matter is I only did it once, and another thing you need to watch how you voice your opinion, "cursing" and yelling is not the way to go, I learned that the hard way, you have to do it with a calm manner and then more people would be opt to listen to you, I didnt even read your whole post just b/c of how you were talking. -_-;;
