I have standard dial-up (28K connect speeds) and it runs surprisingly well .. The one major problem I've encountered is retrieving the updates .. Apparently, there is an issue there which resulted (personally) in 18 hours of continuous attempts (3 minute timeout each) to connect with update server to no avail .. my cure was to cart my boxes to where I work and tap the cable line .. That worked like a charm, but I hate to think that I have to do this every time there is an update ..

People still have 28k connections? It'd be faster to write a letter than send an e-mail.
Anyway, FFXI caps out at 56k so noone can use over that anyway apart from for updates.

I'm on 56k
There is only a few things I don't like.
1) When I have to update. When this happens I just goto sleep and leave the computer on. When I wake up, it is usually done
2) When I am in an area where there is like 2 to 3 PTs surrounding me. I lag

I'm on 56k too.
No problems really just what everyone else mentioned. You'll lag around the AH too but it's definitely not unplayable or anything.

I'm on cable and my friend is on 56K, and when I'm on his, (when you're at a Jueno AH, alot of PTs surround you, etc.) I lag in certain situations, while if I'm on my cable I won't, or, won't as much.

You should take this time to watch some cartoons and get rested because once you start.......well lets just say your not going to have a life too much afterwards. hahahahahhahaha
:)
yea dont sweat being a dial up warrior i have no problems
you can solve the lag issue by going in to the config and turning down the max char models displayed as i have found having a masive ammount of people on screen is really more the gpu on your vid card having a heart attack then your bandwidth geting strained
the only thing that is harsh is the updates they throw at us once in a while
i recently had my slave drive (the one with ffxi) play im gona tear my self apart (damn you maxtor!) so i had to patch from a fresh install my self.. one day and 4 hours later im back in the game
mind you i kept geting disconected in that time so you have to figure in reconecting time and the time it took for the patcher to scan all the files again is a good portion of that time. btw i love the patcher ffxi has much cleaner and well thought out the other games i have played i hope to see more mmos use a patcher like this in the future.
wow this turned out to be the longest short post in history.

Ok my friend just bought this game for his ps2. He set up all his network information, and his FFXI cerdit card info and even downloaded the POL updade, and bought his content Id. But on the screen with the Jungle and the moogle, He hits play and it says it needs to update. It says step one preparing to update. it Says its downlaoding latest information. He fully downloads the preparing to download thing, but then an error screen pops up. It says version update communication error- error code POL-0010, and says network is busy or there are connection problems. Then after that he hits the Network Connections Information on the error screen and it says "Default route adress not set"
has anyone else had this problem? please post here if you ahave

i had the problem with the first bit "error POL-0010" but that was because i got disconected or the sever was to packed.
