I love my macros that I use in game but I'm worried that there will come a time when I will have to reformat my hard drive or something might corrupt them. Is there a way for me to back these files up or maybe even better, edit them outside of the game? If anyone has any ideas about this please let me know. Thanks!

I'm sure this program would be nice if it actually worked on the English version of Windows XP.

Just back up your entire ab1234 directory and copy it back into C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SQUARE\FINAL FANTASY XI\USER\ after you re-establish your account/login info on the new install. This is how you can backup your macros.
just so u have a better understanding, the name of the folder may be of any combination of 6 letters/digits, thus it's not a fixed "ab1234." in case u have more than 1 character, there r as many folders in that directory as the number of characters u have. u should simply back them all up if u don't wanna deal w/ finding which one's which.
also, while macros r stored as mcr*.dat files, other files in the same folder include the map markers. unless u don't ever use that feature, it's better to back up the entire folder than just the mcr*.dat files.

Faranim wrote a good guide to using Vanahand for editing your macros. It should help a little with getting your way around Vanahand.
