well as thiefs we dont get ANY high damaging weapons the highest dmg a dagger can do is 26 (Gully +1 level 71) and when i look at scythes i see that a level 10 scythe has a dmg of 27 (lng. scythe) i mean come on give thiefs some good weapons, there are staffs and clubs that have HIGHER damage than daggers do. many times my mithra thf/nin hits for only 2-3 points higher than the rdm who wants to melee a little. my thief is at level 32 right now, and i know that my sneak trick does more than a taru BLM's magic burst but only once a minute. we need a higher damaging weapon.
/end rant
sorry for posting this but i had to say it
and i know that daggers have the lowest delay. but whats the point of hitting constantly if i hot for 0 on some high def mobs.
right now my dex is at about 45+8, and str is about 32+11 with food. but i still do crap damage compared to any other melee except for nin's
the only thing i can think of that would be kinda high damage would be with guns, but raising marksmanship skills as a thf is very very though and expensive.

I've made peace with having to use daggers, and I HATE daggers. Until you hit level 50 and blackmages get ancient magic (that takes 15 seconds to cast), sa/ta will be hands-down, THE highest-damage attack you'll see. And it you can then apply all that hate to the paladin in the process, all the better.
And I've been trying to track overall damage recently in my groups to see how lame I really am with normal attacks compared to other melee guys. I don't think its all that bad. My hit percentage is WAY better than all the other melee jobs, Mithkabobs help a lot (I really can't remember the last time I hit for 0, and I'm a mithra with +2 strength), and I just make sure to have to best gear possible for my level. Not counting the sa/ta, I'd say I do 50-65% of the damage that drks do, and 65-75% of the damage that sams, fighters and dragoons do. These numbers are of course, estimates, but I'm trying not to exaggerate.
My problem with thief is that once we hit 60, any class can go /thf and do everything we already do. If a drk can sa/ta for more damage, and do more damage during the other 55 seconds of each minute, I don't see a lot of room for thieves. I guess this is why I've gotten used to making my own parties.

yeah i guess there is nothing we can do about it after level 60 i really think that SE should make subbed trick useless, and/or give back yokodoma(sp?)

Is that the new dagger added with the new weapon-based WS? It's godly O_O.

I find that using daggers, the damage isn't bad at all. Your skill cap is very high, and if you wear +attack gear and eat mithkabobs, you can do almost as much damage as one handed sword users at higher levels, plus you attack quite a bit after and end up doing the same damage over time. I generally find my dagger does about the same damage as the paladin with his sword over the course of a battle, since I eat mithkabobs and attack fast, and he eats boiled crab and attacks slightly slower.
The bad news is that after level 60, people with way better weapons than you get access to sneak/trick, the good news is you get dancing edge... AND your sneak/trick damage isn't nerfed like their shitty sub sneak/trick is. Thieves will always do more damage with fuidama than the other jobs, or at least close to.
Haven't seen drk with sneak/trick/guillotine yet.

The advantage of being a thief is the innate ability to score more critical hits. Its not a hidden job ability or anything, just a side effect of having an enormously large dex score. That being said, the damage on thief daggers isnt too bad. Our low damage weapons are more than offset by our ability to triple attack, crit alot, and do massive Renkei damage. Plus just TA/SA alone gives us some damage to smile at.
We use knives, simple as that. I dont expect huge damage on a knife because its not a huge intimidating piece of weaponry. But it is quick... a nice little bonus ^_^

you guys make a pretty good points, yeah out daggers attack fast and everything, and i just went into ballista, and guess what people had a pretty hard time hitting me :) and i rarely missed on a level 40 PLD's/RNG's/THF's/DRK's etc. so i am kinfa happy. and my sneak does about 100 dmg to level 40's i am level 32 rite now. so YAY! hehe but yeah we do critc more than anyone else.
thanks for the replies.
Every thief over lvl 60 that I have seen holds a greed scimitar in 1 hand... if you have dual weild why not use a sword?

It all depends on preference.
Knife + Sword = more delay and slower TP gain.
2 Knives = quicker hit and faster TP gain.
Too bad the TP resets when you switch weapons. It would be nice to be able to use Sword on main hand to do SA/TA and switch to knife to do Viper.

Yes, if you dual wield different types of one handed weapons, you should have access to both sets of weapon skills.

This is outright wrong. You only get the WS of your main weapon.
Though I believe you will still skill up on your off hand.

i have a hard time understanding why nobody has brought up ranged weapons. i realized early that daggers supplied no damage. so i picked up a bow and some arrows. at 28 i partied with a 30ish war and 40ish whm (was out to kill orcs just for fun and drops) i was out dmging the war who was weilding a gsd. and that is without taking sneak into it. a round for me (1 ranged attack [~45] and 1 dagger attack[~20]) took just as long as the gsd and hitting for 20 points more, add in sneak on top of that. maybe i'm off base and this is something that only works at low levels, if so, please let me know and provide any inputs.

Hey Aegir :spin:
Bows are great. You'd need to start training them really early on to be able to hit anything constantly in the mid levels tho. Boomerangs are great too.
Only problem is these are C and D ranked weapons for a thf and against IT HiDef/HiEV mobs in the high levels, this amounts to missing many, many times.

yeah, archery does great damage, but ever since i got to Garliage Citidel i have been slacking off on keeping that capped. i really want to use guns but i dont really wanna spend like 8k per stack of bullets just to raise my skill level.

The emphasis is on SHOULD, as in "should be able to". We can only currently use the weaponskills in the main hand when dual wielding.
