View Full Version : Ps2, Pc
I'm still on the deciding factor...PS2 or PC.
So can some people post the pros and cons of each version, PS2 or PC. It would help me a lot

PC pros:
-Superior graphics depending on the video card.
-The game only costs $50.
PC cons:
-If you don't have the proper specs (video card, memory, etc.), prepare to spend some serious cash.
-Hunching over the keyboard is uber tiring.
-Numerous computer problems can go wrong while playing, such as a pop-up slowing down gameplay, etc.
PS2 pros:
-Guaranteed to work unless there's a problem with the disc/HDD.
-More confortable environment.
-The HDD can be used for other games.
-Because of the cut-corners in graphics, the lag is less likely to happen than on the PC version.
PS2 cons:
-The game & HDD costs $99. You'll also need a network adaptor which costs around $40. Then you'll probably want to get a USB keyboard which will probably be about $10. There's a SWEET small keyboard specialized for the PS2 for $20. All in all, it's major cash.
-Many PC players will call you a 'PS2 n00b'.
That's pretty much all I can think off.
Hmm... ok sounds pretty good. How much different are the graphics from each other? (thanx)

Initially, the PC version's graphics are superior to the PS2 version. But if you have a basic PC video card that's barely making the specs, then it would look worse than the PS2.
If you need screenshots, you can find numerous screenshots around the board. Just find them and compare them. :)
ok,cool. Which version do you have?

a couple of things to add;
w/ PC release, unless u have 2 or more PC's, u can't surf the web (which could be very useful, btw) while u r playing. this is because ffxi doesn't allow us to be play it in a windowed mode. (well, there's actually a way around it, but as it's against the EULA, i won't discuss about it here.) on the other hand, w/ PS2 release, ur PC is eventually freed up, thus u can play & surf simultaneously.
also, w/ PS2 release, if u don't have a router, u might have to purchase one in order for both PC and PS2 to be on the net at the same time. of course, u can switch cables everytime u play ffxi, but not only it's a pain, but it loses ur ability to surf the web while playing. router's price varies depending on ur location, but the cheap ones i've seen cost around $30, at local retail stores. (namely, one of CompUSA's is 29.99, but i don't know their quality.)
Thats good to know, thanks.

I thought I would add a few things about the PS2 version.
1. You get a 40GB hard drive
2. You get FFXI and Rize of Zilart
3. You get FREE email. = NO COST
4. You get an updated DVD player.
Ihave driver version 3.02U and I get better DVD compatibility, slicker user interface, much better image quality.
5. You don't have to worry about the game not working or screwing up.
6. You can store backup copies of all/most of your save files from your memory cards.
7. You get Free chat.
8. You can use a standard USB mouse and keyboard.
9. Sony will be releasing new features for the hard drive very soon too.
10. Contrary to popular belief you can run the PS2 on a PC monitor. The Blaze VGA adapter does a fair job and it is only about $20.00. There are only a certian number of games supported by the Blaze adapter but many games work that are not documented. You can also try places like play-asia.com or lik-sang.com to get a better adapter.
IMO, get a Sony Wega Trinitron, some decent Component cables, and Calibrate the TV with the PS2's DVD player with a calibration disk and the Sony Service Menu codes.
Blows a PC monitor completely away when using the ps2.
If you don't believe me, watch closely on X-Play or check pictures in review magazines. All the good ones use Sony WEGA's or the new XBR models.
And all you need is a cheap Network Card in your computer to go online with the PS2. http://www.ffxionline.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39123
I paid $5.00 for mine. And I can surf the net while I play FFXI but since I have 56k it isn't very functional.
Still, it is completely up to the person. I have a 5700Ultra graphics card but I still chose the PS2 version because it enhanced my whole PS2 experience and I wanted to sit on the couch while I play.
If you have basically an average PC by todays standards, it will run just fine. Ive never had a problem with popups or gliches with my computer version.
I got he PS@ version!!! yay...I'm so proud.
I hooked it up last night,,,and I'm making my character today!
Another thing about the ps2 version is something that has taken me a bit to get used to...
the ps2ers move between areas more quickly than pcers and they look like they've been killed because their hp drops to 0 while they're transitioning. I haven't noticed this with ps2 members.

PS2 Pros:
-The HDD according to Sony was going to cost $99 anyway before the decision was made to include FFXI. So you are basically getting the game free.
-Playing on my comfy leather sofa.
-Playing with my Denon 6.1 surround sound.
-Playing on my 42" widescreen HDTV.
-Absolutely no lag except around a busy AH in the 4 weeks I have played
-Graphics will be easily comparable to most users PC setup; only a handful of people will have vid cards and PC's capable of presenting the game in its absolute best visual mode without performace lag.

1. Most PC's have at least a 40GB HD
2. You get FFXI and RoZ with PC version as well.
3. You get free e-mail with the PC version as well.
4. ....
5. I have never had a game screw up or not work on my PC. I have been playing EverQuest for 5 years. I also play Call of Duty and Halo online with my PC. I am very anal about removal of pests such as malware, spyware, browser hijackers, and the like. Ad-Aware 6.0 with the latest def file...and ran on a semi regular basis will ensure you will not have pop-ups and such interfere with your game.
6. Storing is not a problem on a PC
7. You get free chat with the PC version as well.
8. If your PC has USB ports..and most any PC that meets FFXI minimum specs will...you will most likely be using USB input devices such as mouse/keyboard.
9. ...
I am in no way bashing PS2 users. If you would rather play FFXI via a console, then have at it! Before EverQuest, I used to think that PC gaming was a waste of time and that consoles were the only way to go. Now I prefer PC's for my MMORPGs and my FPS games...but I still love my Xbox and PS2 because they have great games as well.

I know you get most if not all of those functions on a PC I was just pointing out the extra $50 you are paying for the PS2 version is worth it if you like your PS2.
It greatly enhances the PS2 in many areas other than the fact you get to play FFXI.
