View Full Version : Viper Bite - over rated?
I was able to get Viper Bite over the weekend. After much excitement and heart pounding waiting to see this outstanding damage, I instead saw something that hardly outdamaged my Fast Blade. After reading these boards I was expecting to see 600 damage from my Viper Bite alone (I then realized that everybody must have meant combinded with the renkei) where instead I was hitting for around 300-350 with a renkei of 100-150, only getting 400-500 damage (almost exactly what I was getting with Fast Blade).
Both were against the same mob, using the same food, using the same skillchain. I also make sure that both hits land before judging. Even now it's hardly anything more and I have gotten +2 dex and +7 agi from items since then.
Does Viper Bite soon get better at around 40 or something? As of now my Taru DRK friend nearly outdamages it with Slice + Sneak Attack + Last Resort + Souleater (again reading these boards, I was told Viper Bite would be the single most damage attack for awhile; that still hasn't happened), making us only useful for hate control which most people don't even know about anyway.

At lv.46 with good equip, our thief was pulling 500+, giving a renkei bonus of 150-200. At lv.51, she was pulling 600+. It's all about the dex. Leaping boots, hairpin, merc. cpt. belt, bone knife+1, spike necklace, 2 agi+3 earring (are those drone?), long boomerang, and probably some other stuff too, i can't remember since it wasn't my character/equip ^^; At lv.45 it gets really easy for you to make enough money to buy all of that with steal/mug/hide/flee.
The reason your fastblade is outdamaging it is because it's a 2-hit ws. So my guess is that you still need to pimp out that DEX and AGI to get your damage up. Slice + sneak attack + soul eater will probably out-damage you for a little while, but few drk's sub thief pre-60 since it gimps everything except for 1 attack per minute. Chances are pretty good that he has to cancel souleater right afterword, which is a pretty big waste :/
Yeah, I'm stuck regular items. After buying my 30-36 gear, I'm stuck with a wopping 600g. I tried farming, but wasn't really successful at all. I figured I'd wait until 45 for TH2 and Hide before upgrading into HQ gear.
Thanks for cleaing that up for me.

Fast Blade is 2 hit? I was always under the impression that Fast Blade was only 1 hit.
EDIT :
Offtopic, but can somebody tell me a site which says when the RSE quests are? I really need to do Hume M, and I didn't know it was Sunday until it was too late.

Yeah, it's a 2-hit, watch your tp, you should get back 11-13tp, depending on the delay of your sword. If you get back less than that, you missed one of the hits (it happens even with DEX+23412341234 on occasion). Nice thing about multi-hits is it reduces (though not abolishes) the chance that you'll totally ruin your skillchain with a complete miss. Ask a DRK or RNG how much that sucks. If you could see our faces when that happens... It's devistating.
The description in the menu is "Delivers a two-fold attack. Damage varies with TP." ;)

at 43, I'm doing SATA+Viper for 600+ not in a renkei.
Mithra, as much +dex +agi as I can get w/o hairpin or boots.
So no, its definitely not overrated.
I love making my pt memebers go Oooo and Aaaaah...

well a thf/nin gets tp alot faster than a drk/thf so u would get more viper bites off then he would get his off. Also dont alot of those drk abilities have a 5 min wait period. Im not complaining vipering for over 400 once or twice a battle.

Viper is great because you can chain for Distortion. The BLM can MB after for great damage.
SATA + Viper = 4xx
Distortion = 2xx
Freeze = 1xxx

I have leaping boots, no emp hairpin. At 44/45 I typically do 540 Viper against Flys. Less against crawlers. I imagine its less against beetles.

If you have +30 DEX and +30 AGI you will notice a good difference in your Viper Bites attack. If you have around +5 for each..you wont becuase there isn't that much of a boost. With our without VE hairpin and LL boots your Viper Bite damage will range from 300-600 during your PTing period. Not all Vipers will do the same damage constantly. And the hound for Genkai has like - defence..so you really shouldn't count that. Flying creatures have weakness towards Viper as well. That's why you get such good damage off them.

Even though it's possible..I highly doubt you could do this at 43. At least not everytime that is.

ZQM, I thought the same thing when I acquired VB; it was doing less damage than Combo, when I got it.

My VB didn't get really good until I got Drone Earrings at 35. Of course, fighting bats in Garlaige will change your perception of VB immediately.
P.S. VB is one hit, not two, so you don't have to worry about "both hits connecting."

Then why do I get 10% tp back sometimes, and 5% other times? And I look in the log to make sure that I didn't hit the mob with a normal attack.

My friend who, at the time, was a 41 THF was doing this, with only the hairpin. I think it might make a difference in that she is a mithra - the elvaan THF's I PTed with at this level couldn't even come close, were more around 150-200.

you get 5% sometimes instead of 10%? maybe that is when your trick doesn't go through? i dunno that is wierd.

10% TP return is /NIN Dual Wield.
Dual Wield adds a hit to WS.

My thief at 36 could deal from 300-500 SATA+Viper Bite
on worker crawlers in crawler's nest. FUN FUN
At lv.45 it gets really easy for you to make enough money to buy all of that with steal/mug/hide/flee.
can you elaborate on that? how would mug bring a decent amount of money at all ><. 45 you get hide and treasure hunter 2 which are both good but how would you get alot of money just doing steal/mug/flee/hide, i know you're not hunting coffers at lvl 45 since you cant cast invis with a whm sub ^-^

I think it might make a difference in that she is a mithra - the elvaan THF's I PTed with at this level couldn't even come close, were more around 150-200. not always, my friend he was an elvaan same lvl as me, used about the same gear i think, except at the time He was using Elvaan rse gloves and boots and emp.hairpin which he borrowed, and acid knife vs my acid knife/merc.kurki, leapin boots, emp.hairpin, merc gear san'dorian gloves, used cheifkabobs both of us. He outdamaged me which confused me >< he had less dex and agi compared to my mithra but im guessing /war gave more damage to his SA/TA/VB vs my /nin now i only sub /war for the occasional berserk and get to use a pretty frost shield but i'll probably sub ninja after 40 because i dont want to level up warrior.
We were 34 at the time hunting at garliage

can you elaborate on that?
Find a good zone-line with beastmen, E/W Altepa near the outpost is pretty good. Run up to the mob:
/ja "Mug" <t>
/wait 1
/ja "Steal" <t>
/wait 1
/ja "Hide" <me>
You can manually engage flee if you want.
Run back across the line. You only get 50-100 or so gil per mug, but you have the ability and need to wait 5 minutes after stealing anyway, so may as well use it.
I've also heard theives do this near the Rabao zone line. There is an Ant ranger there. Hide doesn't work on ants, but he's not much of a danger at lv.45 anymore, you should be able to get away safely.
There are a few threads with more info on stealing. Not being a THF, I can only tell you the places I've seen others do it, I haven't actively been seeking them out.
