you will get stone from the start.. just buy all the elemental spells as you level up (can be found in San D port magic shop)

Blackmages start the game with a scroll of Stone in our inventories.

For level 1-9, I'd say you pretty much need every single spell. They are pretty cheap so you can easily afford them with reward gils from completing a few newbie quests.

The first scroll you might have problem getting is Blaze Spikes at level 10. It is a Windurst quest, so you won't be able to get it untill a bit later when you can travel to Windurst. It's not a critical spell for group, so you can probably get by without it.

Next is Drain at lv 12, fortunately for you, it's a San d'Orian quest. So while other blackmages spend 20k for it before they can do the quest, you can just complete the quest in castle dungeon with Novalmauge.

Generally, if you are tight on gils, get your elemental damaging spells first. They are what you are all about in groups. The area attacks are very nice to have but not really neccessary. The elemental enfeebles such as Shock and Frost are also important.

Spells to a mage is like weapons and armors to a melee. Skip a few temporarily if you are low on gil, but try to complete your spell list as soon as you can.
