When you start out you can choose Warrior as your job and start with the OS. Then inside your Mog House you can manually change jobs to RDM.
The sword will make goings a lot easier than with a dagger.

100% agree, the sword is much better. And also when you start, no matter what job you do pick, they all start with the same armor.

No, then you will have to buy the spell.
Start as a RDM; someone will be happy to give you the Onion sword, or you can work with the dagger until you have the 100 gil to buy a crappy sword.
Alternately, if you wanted to be really bad, start a Warrior, send the sword to your friend, then delete the character and start again as a RDM and have him send back to you.

starting equipments:
WAR: onion sword
RDM: onion dagger + dia
WHM: onion club + cure
BLM: onion staff + stone
THF: onion knife
MNK: not sure, but I think it's a white belt...
I wouldn't worry about too much about starting gears if I were you. The onion items are not as good as other lv 1 (bronze) weapons.
The magic scrolls are more useful though... so I'd start as one of the three mages if you were to play as a red mage.
Since your friend is already playing, I am guessing he will be footing the bill for your starter gears? For a level 30 thief, noob gears are just pocket change. Even if he's not paying for them, the beginner weapons/armors/scrolls are cheap enough that you can easily afford yourself with a couple quests.
