I don't currently have Final Fantasy XI, but am seriously thinking of getting it. The reason I'm a bit hesitant about getting the game is that I don't know if there is a lot of role-playing in the game, which is an important part of an MMORPG, if you ask me. So, my question is, is there a lot of role-play in FF XI? If so, is there a certain "role-playing" server, whether it is official or unofficial, where there is a lot of role-playing? Thanks for your help.

Isn't roleplay or not depend on players? There is no specific RP server to my knowledge, and if you want, just ask around for the most heavily NA populated server, since you can't RP with japanese because you can't speak their language(I assume)...From what I heard, Ragnarok is a heavily NA populated server ^^;

I doubt people will find RPers annoying... of course, if you RP to the bit like 'I am a White Mage, but my heart is the great warrior that fought in Great War, I always go infront and bash my monsters to death, and I will never heal anyone but myself'... then people will be annoyed... but If you RP normally... I don't think anyone care

There are some Role Playing groups around, just check around in the message boards, find a Linkshell that you like, and that roleplays.

I roleplay sometimes, but other times I just like to go ooc

Im in a roleplaying linkshell on the Fairy server. We usually get together, go on hunts, roleplay and have alot of fun. We also have a webpage with a message board that we develop our characters in and form new story lines. Check us out if you want.

Well in a way your allways roleplaying when you log into FFXI, it might not be the over exagurated "My name is "namehere" and I am the last remaining son of "namehere" and ive come lead in his path" thing but you go into some sort of semi roleplaying state.

You dont experience people talking like its a chatroom but more about VanDiel game matters wich in itself is roleplaying, I would call it a more realistic way of roleplaying since you talk like maybe a vanadielan would talk and not all Heroic sounding like a lunatic who needs to see GM jail.

So for me, yes there is alot of RPGing in FFXI
No there is not alot of over exagurated RPGing in FFXI

Out of all the mmorpgs i've played, this one has the least amount of roleplayers hands down.

The only people sort of roleplaying are some people who play Taru (Pretending to be cute constantly and nice and bouncy) and some mithra players being either shy or overly flirty etc etc.

But it's not really roleplaying, more like fooling around.

So is there any roleplaying in this game? No. Even the LS's who do it don't maintain it and it ends up being shallow and boring, or so i'm told.

If you're looking for a game to 'roleplay', this is not the game for you.

Yeah, Arguile's observations of "role-playing" in FF11 pretty well fit in with my perceptions of role-playing in general in MMOs. The kind of low intensity, spotty, inconsistent, fooling around RP that happens in FF11 and other MMOs can actually be really irritating to someone looking for what I'd call "quality role-playing".

Sometimes I "role-play" a persona in FF11, as a sort of typical (as the game's NPCs and stories that I've seen so far attempt to portray) Hume Bastokan. Cocky, prideful, non-religious, somewhat racist. It's not a role I play with any real consistency though, it's just a mask I like to put on for fun every now and then when I want to do some (hopefully humorous) posturing, joking around, ect. Since as a player I'm not cocky, prideful or racist, usually I don't act anything like the RP persona I sometimes I put on.

In a more serious RPG, someone who "role-played" like I do in FF11 would drive me up the wall. Here, though, serious role-play is non-existant anyway, so I only semi-RP when the mood strikes me or the oppurtunity arises.

I think it depend a bit on how you see your charracter. From My part, I intend to do as much RP as possible, giving a story and a life to my Charracter. I hope I'll meet other like me. On a milion People playing I think we will find the one we enjoy to play with.

For example, we ccan put the story of our character in a Topic somewhere on this forum. Expressing ou thaughts ...

I remember on Anarchy online, I knew someone whose friend married the character basically they all met somewhere and organized everything with 3hrs Role Play ... It these did so, so some others will ... ;)
