it used to be difference. then it didn't work out so well so it's back to normal now, since long time ago.

How did the Exp work before they changed it?

it still is from lvl 61. take a look at this site (http://www.geocities.com/bside_ffxi/).

right after the expansion (when the cap was raised to 65), it was indeed different.

1) the lvl range for IT mobs was too high that leveling parties couldn't kill safely, thus we ended up chaining T's and VT's.
-> changed so that more IT's.

2) after lvl 61, exp u get was based on the lvl difference between mobs and YOU. meaning, if there's a party of lvl 65, and have one lvl 61 player in it, and a party kills a mob that's VT or T to 65 but IT to 61, that lvl 61 player got a lot more exp than the rest of members.
-> changed so the current equation applies, where exp is determind based on the highest lvl within a party.

oh man...I remember right after they changed the algorithm...

OMIGORZ we got 130 xp!
This is so AWESOME
XD

before hand, you just chained 50-75 xp monsters for HOURS...

It's pretty equivalent to the typical xp system now...

originally it was what DJ said. a 61 mages would join a 65 fighters and enjoy the super fast 200exp non stop while fighters getting 60-80 ; /

That's what no longer exists.
