That's what the hard drive is for. ;)

For Japanese version, the hard drive's driver is stored in your memory card. You need a memeory card to make the hard drive works. Memory card doesn't do anything to FFXI directly.

I don't know if it will be the same for NA version or not.

That's only if you have an external HDD, Jei. I boot up my model 30000 PS2 with the HDD all the time without a Memory Card in it. Japanese models 30000 and higher have built-in HDD drivers, and the Network Adapter configuration seems to save to the HDD somewhere.

I also bought a model 50000 with a BB Unit for a friend a few months ago. He had me install and configure the HDD for him and the system didn't come with a Memory Card. I was able to get it to boot from the HDD and connect to the internet without using a Memory Card in the console at all.

I only needed to install a HDD driver to my memory Card when I had my model 10000 PS2 with an external HDD, and the HDD wouldn't boot if the memory card wasn't in it.

I've put my HDD in my US PS2 and it starts to spin up, so I think the US systems have built-in HDD drivers too. The Japanese HDD software just won't boot a US console.

The US systems do have built in HDD drivers, during the beta test I only had to format the HDD and install the game (40min install... then the updates... on dial-up...) never needed my memory card at all.

I currently have two. A Japanese one and a US one. I used to have a Japanese launch PS2, but the external HDD for it broke a little over a week after I got it and NCSX wouldn't support the one month warranty on it that they advertised on hardware they sell. It was cheaper to sell that PS2, buy a Network Adapter, get a PS2 with an Expansion Bay, and remove the hard drive from the external casing to convert it to an internal HDD.

The friend I sold the Japanese launch system to says it's still working perfectly, and he's on his third US PS2. I bought that launch system used from a chain-smoker, and it's still working, while my friend's US system was handled with great care and broke down into DRE syndrome anyway...

Hopefully, since my US system is a Limited Edition system, it's put together a little better and won't break down into that...
