View Full Version : Still don't understand the Job/Subjob system....

Ok, I don't have this game and I'm confused about how the Job/subjob thing works. Say I want to raise a white mage to lvl 30 and turn it into a Bard/White Mage. Since all subjob lvls are half of main jobs, would my lvl be 1/1? And would I lose all the spells I learned while leveling up as a white mage? And while I'm on the road to becoming a bard, can I become a White Mage/Red Mage at lvl 18 then become a Bard/White Mage at lvl 30? And will I still have my Red mage spells? If someone could explain this to me, I would appreciate it greatly :handsdown :handsdown
EDIT: Also, if I have a Bard/White Mage, can I play tunes and cast spells with ease on the fly? I keep reading things about people switching jobs and haveing more than 1 subjob. I see things in people's signatures like "lvl 30 redmage/18 whitemage/6 blackmage" and what does that mean???
Not sure if this will answer all of your questions, but here goes.
When you get WHM to 30 then switch to BRD (after completing quest of corse) your jobs will be 1/1 at lvl 1 BRD. As you gain lvls as BRD your stats will increase but your WHM sub will not increase until lvl 4 BRD, where it will be lvl 2. This will continue in this pattern until you reach lvl 62 BRD. Because you only lvled WHM to 30, 30 is the max lvl of your WHM, main or sub. So at lvl 62 your main job/sub job listing would look like this
62 BRD/30 WHM, until you lvled WHM to 31. You don't lose any spells you learned as a WHM, you just will not be able to use them until your WHM sub is at a lvl it would be able to use it normally. (Example: WHM learn "Dia" at lvl 3. As a BRD/WHM you cannot use "Dia" until your BRD is lvl 6, when your WHM sub would be lvl 3.) For your other question, you won't be able to use the spells you learned as a RDM unless RDM is your main or sub job.
From what I have seen with BRDs in Pt's, it seems like they are able to swich between singing and cast easily, but I cannot give you a complete answer cause I am not a BRD. You cannot have more than 1 sub job at a time, but you lvl as many jobs as you would like, as long as you have access to the job and then switch them in and out as your sub job or main job. There are 6 jobs you can start out with and switch to at any time in your Mog house. The other 9(?) you have to unlock with quests. With your example of someones jobs, it basically means that they have RDM lvled to 30, WHM lvled to 18 and BLM lvled to 6. Hope that helps and didn't make you more confused.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post a reply. You made it A LOT clearer, but I'm still confused a little. If I got my Bard/white mage to 62/30, I can't get my white mage lvl any higher? If I can, how exactly do I do that. Also, if I chose a black mage as a main at lvl 1, got it up to 18 and changed it into a Black mage/red mage, would my red mage be lvl 1? Or 9 because the lvl of the subjob is half as the main?

your subjob does not get any experience points... but if you change back to make your subjob your main job.. you can get exp for that and get it to lvl up... so you would want to change back to a whm main job, get that up to lvl31+, and then change again back to BRD, to get your lvl to be 62/31...
you can think of it as each job having it's only pool of experience points... when you change jobs, your exp for that particular job will be saved until the next time you use it as a main job.

this was confusing as hell to me too. even after getting about 4 adv jobs i still didn't really get it. but you are, as i was, looking too much into it.
exactly as tfung said, think of each job independently. they are what they are and if you decide to sub one, it will be half of what your main is, if you leveled it that high as a main.
i was always under the erroneous impression that subs would rise in lvl with your main. so when i subbed my SAM3 to my MNK7, i was confused as to why my SAM didn't get to 4 when my MNK hit 8. it didn't get there simply cos i never lvled it to 4.
about your WHM question, if your char is BRD62/WHM30, of course you can still get your WHM higher. you just have to switch to your WHM as your main and lvl it. say you're set on BRD and you know you're going to get it to 75... use the WHM as your main till you hit 37 then switch back to BRD and you won't have to stop to raise your WHM sub anymore. since your main's max lvl is 75 there is no way your sub will ever hit 38.
i hope this makes more sense to you now :)

So if you switch from say a 30 white mage, and at sometime want to make this your main again, when you select it again it will still be level 30 with all spells an whatnots?

Yes, any job you have will retain it's level. Also you never loose spells, just may not be able to cast them depending on what classes you are using atm.

ah..
so you can always switch your main and your sub jobs as well.
example.
THF lvl 32
I want to have some warrior skills so I take warrior as a subjob, I can lvl that to 64 max (???)
after that I can switch again and lvl my THF again?
What I understand is that your MAIN job can never be more than 2 * your subjob?
