View Full Version : Role-playing and stuff.

Sorry if this question has been asked before; I quickly read through some of the stickies and the first few pages and didn't come across anything except for Seraphim trying to start an RP linkshell on Cerebrus and getting literally no responses at all. That doesn't bode well for me, but anyways...
Does anyone know any role-playing groups on Ragnarok that would possibly also have a webpage? I do not have this game yet because I am waiting for the PS2 version, but the Ragnarok server will probably be the one that I need to hit for certain reasons. Unless Ragnarok's community is as ass-tastic as they are overpopulated, I probably won't look elsewhere unless there are far more RPing groups that I could find on other servers. Search engines have been somewhat unfriendly to me - especially since the word "Ragnarok" ties in with Ragnarok Online, which has nothing to do with FFXI. If you could help me find some places that I could refer to in the future after the PS2 version is released, I'd really appreciate it. Or you could just give me some confidence by saying I'll have no trouble finding such groups when I'm actually in the game - either way is good.

Playing FFXI for 3 months now. Over 300 hours of /playtime. Number of role-players met in that time: Zero.
My advise would be to look for a role-playing group on ANY server, contact them, and get a world pass from them. There must be some role-players somewhere, but they are definitely a tiny minority in these online games.
Well, I'm still playing pen and paper D&D every two weeks. :)

Good news:
1. I have a linkshell which is dedicated to Roleplaying. KnightsofSandOria.
2. If you pay the cost (no I wont jip you) I will buy you a world pass.
3. I have found a plethora of people on Cerberus to RP with... you just need to look for them...
Bad News:
1. My linkshell is for San dOrians only... as the whole premise of the RP is to further the signifigance of San d'Oria...
2. I currently dont have the money to buy the world pass. but if you give me a day or two, I can earn enough up for you.
Final thing: If anyone else is interested...
(stares at all the powergamers) Dont rush to RP with us or anything, guys...
Please contact me via Playonline, my handle is "Lancelot".
Or email, Izlude1984@pol.com
Its not that Im against people who play the game for nothing more than to get strong... its just that us RPers are the minority and that causes me to be a little cranky towards the tons... and tons... of people who just go in every day to level up and get stronger...
My question for you is, for what purpose do you play? I play to experience a world and interact within it... I play... to Roleplay and have fun... I do like to level up... alot... But it seems like that would be so unfulfilling in the end when you have to stop playing. I mean, I want to be one of those people who walks away from this game one day saying.. I have so many fond memories and friends I have made and roleplayed with. Not one of the... MAN I had a level 60 Paladin/Warrior! It was great...! What did you have?
I'll not continue because I really dont want to start an argument... but please people... Why do you play a game taht is all about interaction with other people if not to actually interact with them, beyond the whole:
"Whats up guys?"
"Not much d00d, we r0x0red that dr@gon though!"
Meh, to each thier own I guess...

and purpose to play without RP?
quests, missions, storyline
rp'ers are just as anoying to me as non rp'ers are to you

Everybody has their peeves.
Personally, I enjoy role-playing, but MMOs designed to appeal to the masses, and the masses, by and large, don't have the sustained interest that's necessary to do any quality role-playing over time.
The harder it is to find role-players, and the more surrounded you are by "d00ds" whose behavior will make suspending disbelief even more difficult, the less willing I find myself to invest the necessary thought and energy in role-playing.
In GemStone III/IV (http://www.play.net/gs4), I was a highly active and dedicated member of the role-playing community there. My character had a modicum of fame in that world, I was involved with ongoing storylines (both player and GM-created/driven) and was never "out of character" or "out of genre" except in exceedingly rare circumstances. I had a good time with it, it can definitely be a "richer" experience than what any MMO can offer you, that's for sure. Aside from the fact that I can sometimes lack imagination and initiative, I'm probably what you'd call an ideal role-player.
In EverQuest, I played on the "Role-playing preferred" server (Firiona Vie) shortly after it was created. It was something I'd wanted to see for a long time. For the first few months of its existence, it was actually a pretty impressive display of a RPing community in an MMO, but due to the low server population, SOE relaxed the ruleset, making it more appealing to the masses and diluting what RP did occur. My character and none of the things I did on FV ever approached the depth of what I had in GS3, and eventually I didn't feel compelled to bother with RP in EQ at all.
Why play these mmoRPgs at all if you aren't going to participate in the "RP" aspect of them? Because the gameplay is fun. Because the social element is nice, even if the socialization isn't role-played (indeed, many people feel more comfortable "being themselves".) Because the quests, missions, environments, storylines, creatures and details of the world are interesting, even if you don't invest a lot of effort into "adhering" to them and "becoming a part of the world".
So most of the RP that happens in MMOs is of the shallow sort. It's cute stuff like Mithra and Taru accents and making clever use of emotes, or making little jokes in the context of Vana'Diel. I role-play a little in this game, when the mood strikes me to immerse myself a little deeper, but if I tried to stay "immersed" full time, tried to create a consistent character and stay "in character" and "in genre" all the time in this game, I think I'd go nuts.

I know exactly how you feel... I think it is because of the push away I get from Non-RPers... And really I think the only way to fix that is to create the groups I speak of, to create the ideal LS or Guild (for eq) that belongs to us who dare to dabble in the ways of Role Playing. Only then, among like minded people can we fully grasp the joy that COULD be attained without being taunted... I would LOVE to see Squenix make a RP only server but I'd fear that what happened in EQ would happen in FFXI as well... So because of that, my offer still stands... Come to Cerberus if you want to RP, I'm always available to meet people In Game...
Sincerely,
Seraphin

I understand all of your points, but i have the feeling, that around Jeuno or Kazahm the peoples who play only to gain Levels grows fewer then in other areas like Valkurm Dunes or the first touch Party playground LaTheine and Konschtat. Sorry for the Windy ppls, but i play mostly on Quon ^^
To reach Jeuno you'll have to pass two Areas (Forest and Batta down) and the powerlevelers aren't suited to pass these fields alive ^^ Maybe some higher level char helps them, but then i don't think they ask hem "wutsup?" <-- i do hate these strings and this nasty short talk as well.
Also on my Server there are many persons (who i playd with) who have their macro in a RPG Style.

You see this too much as a black and white thing. I'm certainly not a power gamer (3 months played and only level 31), but I'm not a role-player either. I don't talk in-character all the time, and I never use "thou" or other funny speech.
You ask why I play? I play for the exploration of the game, and the fun of playing together with other people. I don't care what level I am, because frankly, whether you are killing goblins at level 15 or at level 50 in a group is largely the same. I level a bit, because each level opens up new quests and new zones, but that is not the yard stick to measure my fun in this game.
Games like Final Fantasy 1 to 10 (or X-2) are fun. They might be mis-named if you call them role-playing games, they are more adventure-games-with-character-development. But there is nothing wrong with that kind of game, and nothing wrong with playing FFXI in a very similar way, plus added chat. And I would feel limited in my options if I wasn't allowed to use chat for "normal" out-of-character chatting as well as in-character speech.

I know what you mean. I would love a RP only server, should have been one from the start.
My main excitement in the beginning was the rp, but I was dissapointed to see no one rping. Though some do, it's hard to find them because the ones who want to as I do are usually intimidated by the power levels, and thus feel out of place trying to rp.

The best roleplaying I have experienced online so far has been Neverwinter Nights Multiplayer on Three Kingdoms server.
Pure, hardcore roleplaying and lots of fun.
