Ok this may sound like a stupid question but....how do you lot for an item? Like say I would want to lot for the damselfly worm, so how would i do this?
Target yourself and select treasure. Select the item and lot for it. You may want to check with the group leader if lotting is allowed or not, but since its for a subjob quest I see nothing wrong with lotting for it.

Unfortunately FFXI is full of nutty fanatics that have very extreme opinions on what the proper etiquette is on lotting. And of course there are extremists of both possible persuasions, either "never lot, its easier", or "always lot".
So regardless of whether you lot or not lot, there is a certain danger that you meet somebody who doesn't like it. It is therefore advisable to ask how loot is distributed when joining a party. Especially if you join the party for the purpose of getting a special item, like the sub job stuff.

How to Lot:
Press F1 to target yourself then press Enter. Scroll down to where it says Treasure and select it. Then it will bring up a list of the items up for lotting and you select it and either Cast Lot or Pass it up.
Buy yea, make sure to ask the group if you can lot or not.
