Well, if haven't already read or heard, Paladins are THE tanks of the tanks. It's what their bred to do. So for starters, and as much as it will suck, your best bet for starting is a Warrior. Warriors learn provoke at level 5 and that is one of the many tools Paladin will use later with War sub for tanking. And also Warriors tank pretty well themselves when a Paladin is abscent. Another class you -may- want to also give a shot is White Mage. Playing a White Mage would prepare you for the magic side of the Paladin. Learning how to time cure, and their affects of aquiring hate as well, and when/when not to nuke higher level cures on pt mates. It will also get you the spells early in the game so that when you do get Paladin you won't have to buy the spells later on.
As far as soloing goes. I've Soloed my Paladin up to level 14. 15 is probably possible as well, I plan on getting 15 so that I PT with Shield Bash. It's all up to you, you could probably stop soloing around 12/13 and find a PT if you want and start going that route, but the exp is almost the same for that level in a PT or soloing in my opinion. Paladins also specialize in One-Handed Sword and Shields. So use those and level them, but also don't ingore that Warriors are versatile and very well with Great Axes. Dunno if any of the higher level Paladins recommend it, but I also carry a bow in the off chance, people have me pull since I'm the tank. Im not expert and as Paladin either though I hope to be later on. Hope you find my info helpful. and If I did miss anything or get something wrong please correct me so I can know myself

If you plan on to be a human PLD later on, start out as a WAR. The benefit of been a warrior is you don't have to level it 1-30 again when you start your pld.
The normal route many PLD take is:
WAR 1-18
MNK/THF/WHM 1-15 (once you get subjob as war @18)
WAR 19-30 (get pld job @30)
PLD 1-60 with WAR 1-30
I chose THF as my sub when I unlock the subjob. For the following abilities: Treasure hunter, gil finder, flee, sneak attack. It's nice to have a high enough thf sub for farming these days.
Raising magic skill to prepare pld is nice, but it's not necessary. The casting skill will cap fast as long as you cast spells in the group when you play your pld. (cure yourself, and flash later on).
