Was in a party last night... and well, here's the formation:

Taru WHM/BLM
Mithra MNK/WAR
Taru THF/WAR
Elvann RDM/WHM

to this point, everything seem fine....

Mithra PLD/DRK
Hume SAM/MNK

I got an invite by them, so I asked them what jobs are in the team and the level, level range was real nice, and the leader only told me the main jobs, so I thought the party should be fine, even though it's not the best combination ever(prefer 3 mages 3 melee)...
And so we went to Gustav.... I was thinking, great a PLD in party, I'll only need to be the scapegoat for TA... (didn't realise she was a PLD/DRK at this point) went in the 1st battle, wondered why the PLD doesn't provoke at all.... so I checked the party list... and wonders! PLD/DRK, said to be 1 of the worst combo(I don't know since I have only got a PLD to 11 and DRK is still untouched)... the THF got confused, because according to the main jobs.... me or the SAM should be the scapegoat for the THF, but with PLD/DRK... that wouldn't work... and so I decided to tank, being the only one with provoke(was not willing to tank at all, since I was using low def equips and I thought there's a PLD/WAR in party)...
After 1 battle, where things went real bad ( what can you expect? a MNK to have insane DEF and DODGE?), the WHM asked me to stop provoking, so I told her, I am the only one with provoke, so I have to tank...

WHM: 'You made the monster moved! Let the PLD tank, PLD can cause hate by magic'
MNK: 'Yes, PLD can hold hate by casting a lot, but if monster moves, magic isn't fast enough to save you mages'
WHM: 'The monster didn't move before, and she had provoke'
MNK: 'PLD/DRK does NOT have provoke, provoke is war's JA...'
WHM: 'Just let the PLD tank, they are made tank.'
MNK: '...... a class without provoke can't be a tank....'

I hope most of you know how hate works, its a hidden counter, regardless if I am tanking or not, it's still there... and to clarify, the PLD did tank, with THF's hate passing, and her magic, we managed to make the PLD tank... so for example:

PLD's hate is at 50, and the WHM's is at 51, the monster will of course move to the WHM, and if I didn't provoke, my hate will be at about 15? and let's say provoke gives 5 hates, so I will only be at 20 if I provoke when monster move.... basically the monster will ignore me. the WHM will be casting cure on herself if monster hits, if successful, her cure will cancel the hate caused by PLD's cure...

Another thing is, the reason why I should tank, is that... if say we let the PLD somehow tank with her magic-hate, the THF if he was that dumb, will use me or SAM as tank... which mean my normal attack-hate+my own JA-hate+ THF's TA-hate.... and if we are unlucky enough that our hate outrun PLD's, the PLD will have no way to provoke it back(she hasn't got provoke for christ sake!)... But, If I tank, the THF can at least do TA once every fight... and pass the hate to PLD...

Why would you want a THF in if you don't let the THF use TA and SA?

Now to the SAM/MNK.... what? MARTIAL ART SAM?? Boost gives little attack, he doesn't need Dodge nor HP bonus since he's not the tank... May be because SAM and MNK are both eastern, so you must sub eastern jobs to eastern job or Square will ban or something? Anyway, fine if he can do good with boost, I don't mind... He doesn't use meditate in battle, and woot, he kept using Enpi as soon as he got to 100% TP, I actually managed to get my TP up to 300%, miracles.
For the skillchain, no one willing to plan, the SAM knows nothing about skillchain, despite he is the job that is the best in skillchain... only the WHM planned a Enpi > Viper Bite chain... I mean... there are still a MNK and PLD in party, duh, and a good SAM can do multiple 2-men skillchain(though this one can't)... So I had to come up with something of my own, I only played with a Jpn SAM once, and thats my experience with SAM, so... I can only remember Kagero > Combo.. so we made it Enpi > Viper Bite, Kagero > combo, and PLD single WS....
Anyway, back to battles, so as planned, I was expecting to have to use WS as soon as I get to 100%, since a good SAM will have TP for endless WS.... but it was like playing 2 x 2-men skillchain with a WAR.... because the SAM always use enpi as soon as he got 100%, when me or THF are close to 100% TP... and he doesn't use meditate at all... so 1 skillchain per battle....

At some point of the battle, the SAM would suddenly burst his 2hrs in a middle of an easy battle for no reason, usually a SAM could do self-skillchains with its 2hrs, but no... this SAM just use Enpi nonstop... well mages didn't have time to MB, so that doesn't matter....

PLD would somehow decide to break skillchain whenever she feels like... I assume most of you have been in party where you have to do single WS, so checking other member's TP before using WS is common sense....

Got 2k exp in 1hour+.... >.>;;

Sorry wrote an essay... >.<;

Wow can't believe you got that much XP with that config.

I had a WAR join my PT last night and say that he didnt want to tank because he didnt want to die. At this point we had 2 WHM and 1 RDM along with 1 PLD and a THF. I hardly think anybody would have a serious fear of death with this much healing power. He then proceded to call me a prick as we all questioned him. He was promptly dropped from the PT. Sorry for the side story I just had to share it :p

Well... we have already achieved a lot of titles thanks to all those genius out there, for example, train, die as soon as raised... etc...

And since there were japanese in party, I didn't want to add another name to our list as 'Leaving party in less than 5 minutes, and have everyone looking for party again at the dungeon'.... So I stood for an hour, til I finally explode, and went off =_=;

NIN have it easy here -.- they can just wait for a tough battle pop on their 2HR which instantly kills them, return to homepoint and act like they have something to do there.

My worst PT experience: Valkrum the training place of n00bs. But to my suprise this horror story involves a rank 5 -.-

Anyways I got a PT invite, so I was just like, "Yay!" and hit /join.
I find out they are hunting Gobs as main prey. I was thinking, "Ok, I'll just not call out my Wyvern." Since he would die quickly due to the AoE. They wanted me to tank. Ok, first off I'm a DRG. My defense and Vitality is crap. But they said, "Any job with WAR subbed below lvl 30 can tank." Secondly, why get a DRG to be a tank when there are like 20 WARs LFG? This made no sense to me.

We didn't even have a full healer, we had a BLM/WHM, THF/NIN and those are the only two I can remember. Well the THF had to "leave" (he probably just left the group to get a better one like I should've done. But no. I had to stick it ut because I didn't want to seem rude by leaving -.-), so they replaced him with a JP WAR.

They didn't even attempt to talk to him or work out a SC. And yet they still made me main tank and puller. I told them it was a bad idea and they said they didn't understand. (Ok I had already died like 4 times in this party, they should've learned I couldn't tank) So I grabbed a gob and then the JP focused more on melee then tanking and never even touched provoke. Needless to say I died and I had had enough. They blamed it on me for being so negative and resistent. I just used my ever so freindly emote: t('.'t)

I returned to HP and they booted me.

EXP per hour: 0

I had died so many times and just when I got back the lost EXP, died again. After those hellish 2 hours I had gotten no where. Just my little horror story. Luckily I got a kick ass party soon after that and got 5 lvls that night :0)

Tonight we had a great set up for a group. Yet due to some extremely bad luck, it didn't really work.

War, Pal, Thf, Mnk, Whm, Blm.

Should be able to kill without much problems, right?

Nope, had incredibly bad luck with connection issues, stuff spawning on top of us, stuff aggroing on us, people having to go AFK at the worst possible times, etc.

After 2 hours of this, just made me incredibly cranky and I just logged out :/

Although to the group's defense, we were killing stuff pretty nicely when we didn't have issues, and we had no deaths. :sweat:

Sorry for the confusion ^^;

Now to explain...
I am not sure which part you meant, so I will just try to re-explain in a different way ^^;;;;

Hate counter: I will use a small party as example, WHM, WAR... at start of battle, all members are at 0, but WAR provoked, and now WAR is at 5 hate, each normal attack adds 1 hate, and each cure adds 2... so... WHM cure thru out the battle..

for 10 turns with bad WAR and good WHM:
(start value)
WAR : (5) + 1 + 1 + 0 + 1 +1 +1 +0 +1 +1 +0 =12
WHM: (0) + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 +2 +2 +2 +0 +2 +2 = 18

WHM's hate outrun WAR's, so monster switched to WHM, and WAR is unable to provoke it off. 1 provoke = 12+5=17, still lower than 18, and WHM will be spammin cure on self, so the hates take longer to get back to WAR

Now with a good WAR:
[provoke]
WAR: (5) + 1+1+0+1+[5]+1 + 0 + 0 + 1 +1+ [5]+0=21
WHM: (0) + 2 + 2 +2 +2 +2 +2 +2 +2 +2 +2 = 20

Even at worst moment when WHM had to spam cure to keep alive, WAR still have slightly higher hate, and if monster does move to WHM, the value will be so small, that the WAR can immediately provoke the monster back to him/her...

Now with my party combination, if followed WHM's order:
{THF's TA}<magic>
PLD: (1) + 1+1+ <2> +1 +1 +<2>+1+0+<2>+1+1+<2>+1+1+<2> = 20
WHM: (0) +2 +2 +2 +2 +2 +2 +2 +2 +2 +2 = 20
MNK: (0)+1+1+1+1+{10}+1+1+1+0+0+1+{10} = 28

so if I am to be the scapegoat for PLD, the hate on me will soon get over PLD's in 10 turns, assumin I missed a few hits and PLD hit all, and with me being the tank, the WHM will have to spam higher lvl heal, lets assume that adds 3 points, so PLD have absolute no power in gaining back hate once either of us gone over her hate.... solution? no TA? then THF is wasted...

Now with my plan:
PLD: (1)+1+1+<2>+1+1+<2>+{10}+1+1+<2>+1+1+<2>+1+1+<2>+{10} = 41
WHM: 20
MNK: (5)+1+1+0+0+[5]+1+1+1+1+[5]+1+1 = 23

Although not as good as having an actual PLD/WAR... this would still work better than example 3, no? and that is to assume PLD hit all, and I missed a few... and at least this way, THF could keep the hate on PLD instead of me... and making the PLD tank... if monster do move, the magic from PLD will be cancelled since the WHM is casting as well, so a provoke is a must if that person is needed to tank.

I hope this clear things up ^^;

just say that it was a horrible party experience and explain simply that thf wanted aggro off him, pld/drk is a bad combo and had no provoke and could hardly hold aggro and you ended up having to tank, just say that, too many numbers and thinking involved in reading your original posts

Cali
02-08-2004, 07:41 AM
THF didnt get any aggro, you will... or may be understand when you get to lvl 30 ^^;; (for mage, it's harder to notice what happend in the front, according to my mage friends)
And the most important isn't PLD/DRK being bad combo, we know that... but the fact is, I can't believe people at lvl 39 still havent learn the following:

1. Job combo
2. Skill Chan
3. Tank needs provoke
4. Hate system
5. How to play your job to its best

Mine was tonight in CN. Was setup as a decent party. Brd/Whm, Whm/Blm, Blm/Whm, Nin/War, Thf/War, and War/Pld. Looks decent on paper doesn't it? But amazing how one person refusing to do their job screws a party. The Ninja and the Warrior couldn't get coordinated on who exactly was tanking and who was pulling. And I don't want to even get into the renkei. On the last mob we fought, the Ninja refused to do it despite us telling her to do it as soon as the warrior used Warcry. She just stood there and swung away. We managed to kill it...but we also managed to piss off the Whm who was a Japanese player nice enought o bring in a lot of American players to work with her. You could tell she was getting really really frustrated with the Nin and the Warrior.

Thankfully the next party in CN I had worked out much better.
