What is the best way to farm as a ranger. Is it a good idea to level a beastmaster just for farming? maybe level another class?
Where are good locations to farm and what mobs are best to kill?
Thanks

as with all gilfarming missions, I'm going to attempt to get taru thief up to 15, so I can sub it for rdm/rng/whatever I feel like.
taru thief... to 15... ugh. x_X
treasure hunter and gilhunter are just too much to pass up.

It all depends on your level. I would recommend Thf @ 15 for all types of hunting. TH1 and Gilhunter are useful for both mass monster farming and NM hunting.
As soon as you can kill a monster that drops items that sell very good in 1-2 hits go for it. I hunt with my 37nin/15thf to pay for stuff right now.
I kill crawlers in East Sarutabaruta for silk thread (10k a stack) and the occasional Spinni Spipi for Mist Silk Cape.
As I grow in levels i plan to change this to accomodate he growing cost of a Ranger/Ninja (yup, my first FFXI character and I took ranger/nin. Didn't know what I was getting myself into, but now im in too deep!).
Fishing is a great way to make money. Especially if you smoke a large amount of pot on a regular basis like me.
If you have a lot of time or money take up woodworking. You can make money off of it and make your arrows for cheaper. I plan to do this when I get more cash. No way I'm buying arrows the rest of my careers unless they drastically drop in price. Not likely though... greedy bastard non rangers with high level woodworking I curse you  !!
It all depends on what method you want to take. Personally I would go mass monster farming/NM hunting because they go hand in hand alot fo the time because most NM's require the placeholder to be killed.
You will need to spend most of you Ranger life farming though so learn to get good at what you pick. Practice makes perfect. Good luck.

/THF sucks for RDM.
For RNG, I have no idea.
And THF is a bitch to level as any race.

I find that TH and gilfinder is Extremely helpful if ur farming for gil and what i normally do is kill rams and which type varies usually in my server its like this:
La Theine Plateau:
-Battering Ram: drops Lanolin (quest item and also sells for npc for 700), ram skins (600), horn (1200)
-Also a long the way ull see a lot of Wind Elementals which drop clusters that sell around 1200
-And rarely ull see a NM called Lumbering Lambert
Konschat (sp?) :
-Tremor Ram: almost identical drops except i dont think any Lanolin
- ull also see a NM Stray Mary (appears kinda often) which can drop marys milk (6k ish) and if ur lucky marys horn (150-200k ish)
I find that i was getting good profit from doing, just make sure u have room in ur storage  and the konschat one is kind of harder because you'll have lots off competition (everyone wants to kill mary)

Wouldn't take thief for my subjob.... just to get it to 15 so I can actually gilfarm when I hit 30, crazy stuff.
I picked rng/nin, I didn't know what I was getting myself into either :P, it'll be fun though.

no no not true! Lumbering Lambert and another Ram NM called Bloodtear Baldurf (dont expect to kill this by urself maybe if ur really high lvl) is in La Thiene and Konschtat has a thing called Rampaging ram (not sure how hard) and Steelfleece Baldarich (another hard guy) :spin:

rampaging ram and lumbering lambert doens't drop anything out of the ordinary from normal rams other than a special rare/ex horn. Bloodtear and steelfleech will take about a lvl 70 with potions to solo that thing, so don't think about that anytime soon.
