View Full Version : Is Penta Thrust overrated?

Considering that I rarely connect with 5 hits.

More often than not I connect with 1-3 hits against IT mobs. Occasionally I miss all hits.

This is as Mithra, with max possible +DEX and +Acc (excluding uber-expensive items like Peacock or Emperor Hairpin).

I have no problems actually hitting ITs with regular attacks. But when it comes to Penta...

I rarely go under 3 on totetote (IT) stuff, and 4-5 hits aren't that uncommon. I'm a hume with +7 dex, a life belt, those level 14 acc+3 gloves, and one sniper ring... Are you sure you've got all the possible equip?

Brigandine: +2 DEX
Centurion visor: +1 DEX
Spike necklace: +3 DEX
Ametrine ring: +2 DEX
Ametrine ring: +2 DEX

Lifebelt: +10 Acc.
Battle gloves: +3 Acc.

+10 DEX, +13 Acc.

I guess that amounts to about +18 Acc.

Can't find any other DEX or Acc. boosting equipment under 200,000 gil...and I'm doubtful I could make 200,000 unless I took a month to hardcore farm 24/7.

Get a peacock charm. Of course you'd have to take 2 years away from leveling and spend those 2 years in Ghelsba mowing down Orc's. Or you could of course spend 5 years camping the monster that drops it. Whichever you want. Peacock Charm gives +10 acc. It is approximately 4 million gil on Midgardsormr.

Yea, I was looking around at some items I'd need as higher lvl DRG and all I can say is "Damn." Exactly who prices these things?! I'd have to spend months and months farming just to get 1 item! I mean seriously this is ridiculous. 2million, for a grand knight's lance and 4 million for the peacock charm?! I'd rather farm for about a week and spend 30k on a life belt.

If you guys would look closer, they are 4 mill becuase the same guy put it on auction then bought it to show that he has a peacock charm and 4 million gil, no other reason, it was same seller and buyer im sure in both cases, peacock is 1 mill.

No, on Ramuh Jeuno AH was full of 4,000,000 sales of it. All were sold to different people.

There's ways to make 700k+ gil per day farming at high level anyway. Also 200k shouldn't really be a big thing to you if you're high enough to have Penta, you just need to work on your Gil farming method and maybe level a blm or whm sub so you can farm nonstop without resting much at all.

How?

I've tried every gil-farming method I've seen on numerous sites, and as far as I've tried, even 100k...or even 50k a day seems downright impossible. Granted, I don't have TH (which I'm currently trying to get).

It's not that I can't kill non-stop.....it's just that my luck with drop rates seem hideously bad.

Most of the cash I made was basically when I was wandering through an area without camping per se. Basically you just need to know what is valuable on your server and how fast it moves/how much effort it takes. I've been farming Banshees at night in Qufim and usually get half a stack or more of cotton cloth and a few escape scrolls each night. 8k per stack of cotton cloth and between 2500-3k for Escape scrolls. The occasional elemental crystal cluster adds up too, and Light Elementals is like winning the lottery. Try farming Skinks in Sauromugue for Raptor skins or Tabar beaks for giant feathers - on my server stacks are 20k-25k respectively. A lot of my farming is done between waiting for groups in areas near Jeuno and it does add up over time. I don't like NM hunting much because it generally amounts to sitting somewhere for hours til it spawns and you get ganked by a RNG/WAR who just showed up, making the time mostly wasted, and the drops are rare even with THF sub. So far I'm 0/2 on Leaping Lizzy, 0/1 on Leech King, 0 for tons of NM's. Of course if you do luck out, NM hunting can be very profitable. Can always try winning the provoke war on Argus, 4 million gils goes a long way (of course the item is incredibly nice too..).

Anyway, make the most of your time between groups and you will find the cash just tends to appear over time making expenses seem less daunting. The only fast cash methods I've seen is a day of BCNM farming, and DRG isn't so great for BCNM40 which is the one done most often with really profitable drops. Other than that, I don't think anyone has a really fast way to make money which doesn't involve farming a lot of sellables.

I'm lvl 20 DRG right now, so I can't expect to see some big gil in my pocket until 30 more lvls? Awww. Man in FFXI the most gil I've had is 5k when I was farming for battle gloves. :0( I'm so poor. /cry

Money comes very easily from BCNMs. Recently did a BC60 and earned 1 million gil in the space of 20 minutes. Damask Ingots, Astral Shields and Assault Earrings are all high sellers and they all drop from the Palborough Burning Circle.

Besides hunting BCNMs, you can always go Mining. In Gusgen Mines it is extremely profitable yielding Gold Ores.

If you want to invest time instead of money in a trade, try Fishing. I hear at around 60ish skill you can fish up 100k in around 2 hours with no real troubles. However, skill ups come once a year and then it'll only increase your skill by 0.2 ^_^

Err my bad, Damask Ingot was from BC70 that my LS member got because we had a night of BC hunting so when I looked in his bazaar to see what he got , he had the Damask Ingot in it as well :D

But the other items I listed are from BC60! Swear to god :)

Thanks for the tips guys. I am a lvl 32 drg and very poor ; ;. People in the my LS have recently started mining and they make about 30-35k everyday is gusgen. The lvl 50 whm farms there. I am not high enough lvl to do that yet but eventually i will. The most money i have ever had at once is about 80k. I got it from getting rank 4 then selling royal squire armor because Drgs can't wear it. Then i bought replacement lvl 40 armor with the money. I should have bought mining skill increasing equipment and some pickaxes and heading to pal mines or yughott grotto i think is the other place they go. >.< oh well money lost in hind sight but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I need to raise my thf lvl for treasure hunter. I only have gil finder at this point because i sub warrior with drg.

hi

what in the hell do you expect really?
if it was that easy to land 5 hit combos on IT monsters they wouldnt be very IT now would they?

generally i wouldnt really bother sacrificing the time that would be needed to get a peacock charm at lvl 30-50 unless you are willing to camp it yourself as you need the cash for other upgrades later.

elvaan here with life belt , battle gloves and approx +10 dex worth in assorted items and penta hits for 5 fairly often on IT mobs but usually its 4 or 3 hits which is not really too bad.

at some point additional ACC becomes redundant as the highest possible chance to hit a mob is 100%.

the trick is to find that point and then invest in ATTK gear for better DPS.

PS penta is only really abusive when you go the sub samurai path where by you can do 3 or 4 pentas in a row (within 30 seconds) with store tp and meditate. in that case it is worth your while to max out you ACC as missing penta hits would make a difference. for almost every other sub a balance of ACC and ATTK would be best cause you would not really be able to make the fast TPs and a more consistent damage base would be more effective in the long run

A question, is Penta Thrust considered more powerful than Guillotine?

sonova
02-01-2004, 02:35 AM
ummmm
thats hard to quantify
since DRKs have soul eater and last resort (maybe berserk too)

and 3x your ATTK bonus

even with your wyvern breath bonus added and assuming maximum hit on both WSes, the DRK's guillotine should be the more damaging of the two.

also the base damage of scythes are higher in general

however if it were a warrior using guillotine (assuming they get it) it would be another story

I have seen both Penta Thrust and Guillotine. Guillotine is a stronger WS it is the most damaging in the game as far as i know. Penta Thrust is good but not as good as Guillotine.
DRK/SAM > DRG/SAM and like the person said above me in his post. Drk's have last resort, soul eater, and maybe berserk. They may also have if subbing thf sneak attack and trick attack which are a nice boost too.

So in a fight if a Drk can land this this is a Drk/Sam

Last Resort>>>Soul Eater>>Guillotine>>>Meditate>>>Guillotine

That drk of course wants to die doing this and will die most likely but at least you went out with a bang.

Its not as amazing as people make it out to be, or the people who have it and say its great don't actually pay attention to how often it doesn't connect all 5 hits and how little damage it does if at least 4 hits don't land...or they are talking about the damage killing really weak crap (which THAT is pretty spiffy, but so is any ws really). Each hit is less than a standard melee hit (seems usually about 75% of a normal hit).

I have 2 sniper rings, a life belt and trying to get a Merman Gorget hopefully soon. While I do notice a difference from having 2 sniper rings vs 0, on most IT's the damage isn't impressive. Skillchains > Penta spam. Its something to do while you wait for others to get TP mostly.

As far as saying you should invest in + atk equipment...the only ATK equipment a DRG can use by 56 is a Tiger Stole, Spike Earrings, Assault Earring at 58. Past that I haven't exactly seen much in the way of + atk equipment, so +15 ATK isn't much to get excited over. I'd rather get more STR gear...which isn't exactly in any great volume to say the least.

sonova

ummm + 15 attk is roughly 30 str?
