View Full Version : How did YOU defeat the Dragon?

Since I have not yet beaten the Dragon to unlock this job, I'd like to hear some stories about how others were able to bring the damn thing down. Did you build a good party? Beg a high level player? train up and smash its face in solo?
I don't have my own story, but one of my friends took the dragon down with a party of six ranging from Lv. 30-37. Everyone used their 2 hours, and scrolls of Re-Raise were used. Even with all that only two people survived.

Heh my LS went in a 6 person aprty obviously, they ranged from 30-33 and completely destroyed the Dragon. I might be able to help if you are doing the quest this weekend as ive already doen it. Maybe even tomorrow if im able to get off.

Dead dragon~
At level 50 the first round of combat was me hitting Cyranuce for 38 and him critting on me for 101. So I blew up and dropped 5 WS's on him. Could not have done it without use of 2hr.

I did mine with a 55+ DRG. I was 31 MNK. He took all the hate, I used my 2hour. No Deaths, and it was quick.
Oh yeah, Hello. New here.

LOL that was too funny. Sigh sometimes I wished for high lvl ppl who could do all the work for me in Beta :p
But I have to admit, it was fun helping a full alliance do M9 a few times(I think I did M9 about 9 times for other ppl #.#). Most of them being lvl 20-30, myself being 47. I was doing 600+damage to all the mobs with Sturmwind
I hope everyone gives the same favor to lower lvl ppl when they get high enough to kill everything with 1 hit :p

So far I've done all of the quest except for the final fight against the dragon. I'm also free for about the whole day up through monday, and I've got one friend who can help me out. (he's a Lv. 32 THF, the guy who was in my story)

I did the Dragon relatively early after I started playing (about 3 weeks) and really knew very little about the game. Basically I went with some people I met in Shakrami camping the excavation points, a 34 WHM in my LS, and asked a 52 JP DRG to help kill the dragon in completely terrible translator-speak ^^.
Basically the fight went like this : I hit sneak attack, I did 102 damage, poked it for 8, the 52 DRG jumped on it 2 times, did Pentathrust shortly after and it was all over. I had never seen Pentathrust and was completely wowed, was like "HOLY SHIT THAT GUY JUST HIT THAT 5 TIMES IN A ROW IN 1 SECOND". The dragon died about 20 seconds later, and the only damage the DRG took tanking was from the breath attacks. Inspiritational to say the least.
I think a balanced party of level 30-33's with decent equipment could take the dragon for sure, but I have no doubt in my mind my newb party would have been owned within a minute. If I knew then what I know now I would have been better prepared.

My strategy was simple : Get a 60+ meelee character to help me:spin:
After some unsuccessfull tells, a 61 WAR in AF ran by the hut and asked in translator if I needed help to kill the dragon
Guess what I responded:)
The fight took more than 20 sec, but less than 1 min W/O WS or 2HR.
70 Pld helped me with mine, I had grped with him a few times in qufim while he leveled his Ninja and he offered to help. He basically provoked and tanked it, he allowed me to do alot of the damage, he turned away from it so I would do damage, he did throw a penta thrust on it and we did a double--penta chain that did some nice damage I don't think he lost more then 400 hp, and he was facing away from the dragon for a good part of it, so parry wasnt a factor.

Helped a friend unlock this tonight. 5 of us , levels 30-31 took the dragon down without any trouble, although the fight was still challenging enough to be fun. However, the 5 of us were accustomed to working together, and we were sure to pack the appropriate foods/juices for everyone.
I popped meditate while the casters buffed/healed to full, so by the time we engaged, meditate had refreshed. Dropped 5 WS's on it right away (using 2h) , two distortion skillchains in there somewhere, putting the dragon at about 65% to start. The rest of the fight took a few minutes, but I didn't have too much trouble tanking the dragon as a sam even with beserk up...got scared once when it did a special for 350+ though. Towards the end, the rdm used chainspell and just burnt it the rest of the way down.
Like the other two expansion jobs (sam/nin), the difficulty is exaggerated a bit...all three are doable with even less than a full group of 30's, although trying it with pick up groups and the like will always make it more challenging. We had fun times unlocking these three jobs. g'luck.

I had a 58 WAR and a 61 BLM help me and another 30BLM getting the quest. The BLM got aggro and i was able to use Sneak + Trick to get aggro on the WAR. I was happy about actually doing something. I really wanted to do it the non-cheap way though. After I got DRG up some, I joined a group as 30THF/12DRG. With the help of the DRG def boost ability I was able to kill it normally. Doing it in a full group of 30-32 made me feel better then. :)

A lv 57 DRG and lv 60 DRG, the former in partial AF armor, the latter in full AF armor. Both had their wyverns out. Dragon was a cloud of red mist when they were finished ^^

Hi guys
I was wondering, how would a
42 RDM
25 WHM
36 PAL
2 30 THF or 30 THF and 30 BLM/ 15 WHM
30 SAM
would do in battle with the dragon fight needed to obtain the job dragoon. Please any help / strategy would be deeply appreciated.

I soloed the dragon back when I was a level 52 RDM without Phalanx. I just kept casting Stoneskin every time it wore off. I didn't have any problems thanks to Refresh.
Celeras soloed the dragon back when he was a level 50 BLM, but he almost died. XD

Well I was the first in my ls to do the Dragoon quest, so I was sol for friends that have done the quest. I was in Sandoria and looked for high levels who might have already done it. I found a high level Ranger (50-60) who had the Dragoon class unlocked, she said no though... So I was half way to Ghelsba and she said her plans changed and she'd help me. She took the first hit, I ran in and did what I could, and it was over before we knew it, some very low levels that were doing sandorian mission three, watched the battle. If anyone is in Unicorn and needs help with it, I'll be more than happy to, you'll have to find a party of course, since I'm not to high in Dragoon yet.

Dragoon_K... I hope you realise you have misspelt "Under" and actually written "Uner" in your signature banner.
PS: Just got the game, Lvl 10 War. Hoping to be Drg within a month.

Haha! I finally beat the dragon last night! My team was such:
Lv. 32 RDM (me)
Lv. 30 THF
Lv. 30 WAR
Lv. 40 THF
Lv. 67 DRG
The Dragoon was a very nice player named Seville, and he made short work of the dragon and helped three of my LS friends get DRG!

Ehh, Im not too sure about that. While i was Lv. 36 or 38 I tried to help my friend do the dragon and the dragon completely destroyed me with his Breath attack for 400+ dmg.

Doubtful. The Lv. 30 WAR in fully updated Centurion mail nearly died from the dragon's AoE attack alone. I highly doubt four guys in their 30s could pull this battle off.

A group of 6 lv30-33 can beat it fine. It was kinda tough but we did it.

killed the dragon easy
the dragon doesnt really hit hard?
only real damaging attack is its breath
and the dragon stops attacking to cast dispell quite often?
i'm quite sure we debuffed him too so its a piece of piss?
the warrior only came close to dying once which was remedied with a benediction.
how much easier can this possibly get?
it was probably harder for us since we had to use THFs for DPS rather than BLMs or even RDMs

A dragoon let me have my fun with the dragon for a while (arcane circle) allowed me to fight it 1 on 1 for a couple of mins then it took half my hp in a couple of hits :spin: lvl 30 warrior at the time

Well not like anyone gives a damn, but ...
After running around for 2 hours doing all the work, here's me resting before the big fight (http://www.waterdoggy.com/ffxi/drg1.jpg).
All buffed up and ready to go (http://www.waterdoggy.com/ffxi/drg2.jpg).
OMG The dragon. It's so ugly. (http://www.waterdoggy.com/ffxi/drg3.jpg)
The fight begins (http://www.waterdoggy.com/ffxi/drg4.jpg).
Recasting buffs. Not that I really needed to, but meh (http://www.waterdoggy.com/ffxi/drg5.jpg).
Dragon dies (http://www.waterdoggy.com/ffxi/drg6.jpg).
Choosing a name (http://www.waterdoggy.com/ffxi/drg7.jpg). I eventually decided on Delphyne.
I don't have a pic of me with wyvern, because I did call wyvern, then went into pet abilities menu and selected the option not knowing what it was, and my wyvern flew off :spin:

I had a 56 Ninja Help me do it. i took off MAYBE a 1/10 of its health. Battle was over in like 2 to 3 min max. Ninja Blink or whatever its called owns. He was only hit like 3 time during the fight. I then went and did BST and im doing Bard now. like 25 Dragoon now heading to Kazham after Bard quest.

Well I just beat the dragon about an hour ago.
With the help of a lovely Paladin level 61 of course. ;)
We pwned the dragon in 2:43 or something... not too bad considering Paladins are not damage dealers.
Basically he buffed me up with Protect III and Shell III then we entered the battlefield. He Provoked it straight away while I was attacking Cyranuce from behind.
He used Sentinal but then realised that the dragon was doing tiny damage so he used Berserk.
I got paralyzed halfway through the fight but it didn't really matter because the Paladin used a Banish II and ended the dragon right there and then.

What do you think the chances are of me killing the dragon solo as a 49 Sam/War?

Killed it myself. I had originally employed a level 52 darknight to aid me however i found out he couldn't enter battlefield. So the fight went fairly quick. Dragon couldn' t do more than 12 dmg at a time excluding criticals. He never used his breath attack either. It was kinda fun too ^^ Took a screenie of it.

50 pld
33 rdm
37 mnk
Pld voked, I 2 houred, rdm debuffed...I ended up tanking most of the fight (monk) because I wasn't taking any damage for the pld to heal to get aggro back. By the time the rdm finished debuffing (everything landed without issue) and went to use chainspell to nuke it down, it was already dead.
This isn't a difficult fight...the dragon is probably only level 35 or so. Like all fights where you have 1 target you want to kill as quickly as possible, monk 2 hour kicks arse. ^^
