Hello well ive finally decided to become a thief (i lvled all the starting classes and liked thief the best)
Im just wondering if i go dagger at the start will i be gimping myself at early lvls until higher levels. Everyone in game that i asked said that sword is better until 33, but i really dont feel like lvling up 2 different weapon skills and buying 2 weapons..
If you want. But u cant use sneak attack with any weapon skill except wasp sting.....................Its your choice between a few thousand gil and you caring about how good you are.

You really do need to level sword, dagger and H2H. This will make you the best THF and more attractive to groups.
It doesn't cost that much for weapons, the weapons I am using are around 2-5K each.

I only lvld Dagger and Sword, no H2H and i was never asked for H2H. They delay is too long anyway... Swords are better damage and have better WS than Daggers.
Im 32 now, started dual wielding Daggers at 31 and got the skill maxed out already. Its not very hard to build it. Do swords, beter damage and WS, then switch...
A good thief will raise both and keep current weapons of both types for renkei flexibility.

I capped Grapples, sword, and dagger for awhile, then at 24 I kind of stopped with grapples. Today I bought a pair of Lynx Baghnaks and decided I'd skill my grapples up.

Yeah, that's what I do and I think it's really beneficial.

The first couple of levels of my Thief. I did Hand2Hand with Monk subbed. Made the levling WAY easier.

I use a MNK sub and the damage done by grapples seems on par with a sword if not better.
It certainly seems that I build up TP faster with grapples and combo is awesome to finish on as it is usually nucleate heat (fire) and many things are vulnerable to that.

H2H to lvl33 then nothing but dagger don't worry about sword.

I mean, it's fully doable. But forget about sword renkei?

um, hth is an E rated skill for THF. So, how the hell do you ever hit anything?? whiff, whiff, whiff??

Where are these weapons "ratings" coming from? I've never seen/heard of them before this forum...

Sword > Grapples.
And if you're one of the 100 people that want to be THF/NIN then using sword is better. It also seems to (me) that Sword is faster Grapples.
But, I haven't tried this, I think shoulder tackle connects with sneak/trick, so grapples might be better for that.

Prior to 33 and Viper Bite I'm pretty sure the only two techniques that stack with sneak attack are combo and fast blade. Only ones I ever noticed doing it, anyway.

hand to hand works great with thf. i'm lvl 23, and at 300% tp, i can stack sneak/boost, and release with combo on clippers in qufim for 229 damage every time. i keep a sword and dagger with me at all times, because i lvl dagger every time i lvl, and i have the sword if we need to renki with it. this 'E' rating doesnt effect much until about 30, when there is a huge skill cap gap between weapons...
besides...thfs sword rating is D and h2h is E...you get 2 hits with H2H, so i normally get more TP with H2h than sword....
