View Full Version : Thf Gear lvl 30-40

This post is mainly to ask advice on what gear to shoot for till 40.
Currently, i'm a lvl 32thf/nin, i think with decent gear, but like to keep my stuff upgraded. this isn't a bragging post, if you dont have this and ur a 32 thf, then u got some gilfarming to do.
other than NM drops (leaping boots, or the Emperor hairpin, or strider boots, etc... ), what other gear should i concentrate on? i can't afford dual balance rings, and will upgrade to ametrine at lv. 36(?)
I currently wear
Head: Merc Capt. Headgear (STR+1 DEX+1)
Back: Nomad Mantle (AGI+1 Evasion +3)
Body: Merc Capt. Doublet (AGI+1, DEX+1)
Legs: Merc Capt. Hose (Evasion +2)
Feet: Savage Gaiters (mith RSE, STR +3 CHR+2 HP+16)
Rings: Dual Amethyst (+2 DEX)
Neck: Spike Necklace (+3 DEX, +3 AGI)
Earrings: Dual Beetle +1 (attack +6, evasion -4)
Waist: Warrior's Belt (currently working on saving for Merc Capt. Belt, but 40k which i dont have on Midgard.)
Weapons:
Sword: Centurion's Sword
Dagger: Merc Capt. Kukri
Flame Boomerang (upgradeing to Long Boomerang at lvl 33)
What do other thieves around this level wear and what has worked for you?
thanks

I've probably been spending too much time farming gil for equipment and too little time leveling. ^^; Overall, I think its probably better to level to where you can hunt things like the Valkrum Emperor with some friends than spend aeons farming gil to buy them in most cases. Given my general ability to find the crappiest groups possible (not all of them, the good ones are really good and the bad ones are really bad - sorta like a evil McBLT), I don't think being decently equipped has ever affected getting invites (but that just goes to show how bad my xp grouping has been :/ ). It does get you hordes of examine spam though. <_<
Not having partied with other thieves in a while I'm not sure if all that extra dex and +evasion really pays off. I like to think it does, but I don't really have a point of comparison. I had been considering saving up for a pair of Winged Boots, but I couldn't resist going and buying stuff to level RNG, doh. Other than that I was planning on getting a pair of Drone Earrings at 35 and a pair of Deft Rings at 36, whenever I get around to leveling THF again. Maybe a Federation Kuhkri at 34 if one is for sale; if can sell my Scimitar for what I paid for it I'll break even between the two. @_@
One thing I've sorta been wondering about is where to upgrade armor before Brigadine at 45. There's Gambison and whatnot, but I was sorta wondering whether the stat bonuses are worth more than the added DEF at that level or vice versa.
-edited because I noticed I was leaving words out of sentences XD

How did you get the mithran scimitar? It's 80k on my server D:
Kerberos

Its only 40k on Odin. In reference to Sukari's original post, the Merc Belt is only 10k in Jeuno last I checked. I dunno, maybe I'm on the reasonably priced server . ^^;

yeah me and "nameless" are both on midgard.. you wouldnt believe the price whoring that goes on here. mithran scimitar for 100k (last time i checked), the merc capt belt is 40k (windy is in third, can't get the belt).
this sucks.

Just about +12 DEX and +7 STR and +2 AGI
Too broke for Nomad's Mantle, another ring and 2 earings. :(
I got the Belt for 10K.

I used to dual weild the Merc. Capt. Kurkri and Small Sword (DEX+2), but the delay is too damn long so I went w/ 2 daggers.

i wish i could get some balance rings on midgard... on my server its so much cheaper to get to lvl 36, and save for ametrine rings (dex+2) but STILL 15-18k a piece. i hate midgardsormr.
kerebros - do you know what level you need to be to camp the emperor's hairpin. 40 ok? getting the maurader's knife and the hairpin would be a nice present for myself ^^.
i've killed lizzy 4 times, no drop with TH1. come to think of it, i've killed about 12 NM's and no drop.
merc capt belt. we wantsssss it.

My brother camped the Valkrum Emperor with a lv 37 monk and had no problem. So you can probably do it with a 40 thf, though i'd bring a friend a long; especially someone subbing rng for wide scan.

The price got lowered to 50k.
(does math in head for number of tigers I need to kill for that san quest)
I need a better money source.

Anyone have suggestions for armor (hands, body, and legs) between 30 and 45? Is the +5 evasion of the Scentless Armlets worth keeping or have they outlived their usefulness and I should go for the +1 AGI (I think) of the Merc. Captain Gloves?

Hume RSE!
Oh....wait... ;)

i would suggest battle gloves.. +3 accuracy and +3 evasion.. level 14 item i believe, pretty useful for quite a while i think ^^;
i would choose these over scentless armlets for a few of reasons.. firstly, you shouldn't really be taking hits in the first place.. secondly.. accuracy is invaluable when added to your already 'dexy' (that's not a typo^^; ) mithra.. and thirdly.. your evasion bonus is almost the same as the armlets anyways ^^
alternativly.. you could go for +1 agi from merc captain.. but i'd still go for the battle gloves
-- edit --
for legs.. i'd be tempted to try the mithran rse, the merc captain.. or there are some avaliable with higher defence.. i don't think the legs are too important at the moment to be honest..
.. and for the feet.. leaping boots.. i don't consider any other boots to be their equal at that level.. (with perhaps the exception of the strider boots) ^^;

I just got lv 30, Mercenary Captain gear works very well. I have 2 +2 dex rings, warrior's belt, spike neckless, battle gloves, and a centauren sword.

I was considering mrc.cpt. since I think i remember reading that agility helps Trick Attack. I mostly have kept the Scentless around since I got it as a quest reward and at the time the extra +evasion seemed useful (I soloed more between 1 and 20 than anyone should have to as a THF ^^;). But you make a good point, I haven't really thought about accuracy too much since I'm usually hitting much more than anyone else in my parties anyway. It wouldn't hurt to be more accurate though and the difference of 2 evasion isn't such a big deal. :3

Already working on that, I'm thinking about getting Winged Boots instead since I'm already lv 30 and they cost about the same on Odin.

well.. agi does help trick attack.. at 33 you can buy a long boomerang +2 agi.. and at 35 you can aquire 2 drone earrings - +6 agi (+3 agi per earring).. if you have some other suggested items which other people have mentioned here, at level 35.. you can have an agi of +13.. perhaps higher^^;
fuidama damage is nice.. however.. at the moment.. +1 agi is not enough to sway me from the additional accuracy.. as i am only level 37 ^^
and a small amount of evasion does not hurt also ^^;
winged boots look very very nice ^^; ... nice because you can then hunt leaping lizzy to sell leaping boots while still having +3 dex and +3 agi.. i would like to aquire them very much^^ ..

Sub a ninja and use Blink ninjitsu and you won't have to worry that much about evasion. :D

Don't forget for legs you can wear Bastokan Subligars.
+3 attack, +3 accuracy.
And if you really have money, go for the Bastokan Subligars+1, which adds +5 instead of +3 ^_^

Hmm... I sold my Merc. Capt. Kukri and bought 2 Archers Daggers.
The Archers daggers each have +1 AGI, but the Merc. Capt. Kukri has 13DMG instead of Archers 11DMG. Was this a good idea? 2 more DMG isn't that big is it?
Can't wait for Marauder's Knife! :biggrin:
2 damage is pretty big...

I have to buy all my level 30-40 equip. And it was going to be pretty easy, I still had to pay up to 120k but now I have to pay more because Bastok lost first -_-;;
Gonna farm black tiger fangs I am.

is a mithra scimitar (+3) worth it at lvl 36? i know the requirement is a lot lower, but i now have the opportunity to buy it.... either that or i start the long road to getting my leaping boots.
suggestions?
yay! windy's first.. got my merc capt belt!

Mithran Scmitar is nice. I would buy it if I have the money.
It's expensive and rare too. I've only seen one for sale at the AH whenever I check for it. Last sale was around 40K gil.
I bought a Strider Sword instead for about 4K gil. It has +3 AGI so it's still nice. Now my DEX and AGI boosts are even. :D

- mithran scimitar - 19 damage, delay 228, dex +3
very good weapon up to 33.. (friend loaned me one untill i was ready for viper).. but dagger is required for viperbite at 33.. i would recommend windurstian or federation kukri.. only reason i can see for scimitar is to boost stats in ninja's off-hand..
.. but consider this ^^;
- marauders knife - 15 damage, delay 190 dex +2 agi +2
level 40 thief artifact dagger, very easy to obtain... nice, no?..

yeah, right now use dual wield.
i use a merc capt kukri and switch with a windurstian kukri when im in non-windy controlled areas.
in my right, i use a strider sword or a centurion sword, and am buying a mithran scimitar (40k) when my auctions sells to replace the strider sword.

Wing or Drone ear rings are good at 36 (+agil). The Long Boomberang at 33 is nice too, +2 agil.

lv32, almost ready to go back and level!
Equipment here: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/profile.xml?6193
Can I use Mithran Scimitar and Fed Knife till 40..? >>;
Invest in a winudurstian or federation kuriki at lv 34, it's a lot more powerful. Remember that even +1 damag on a knife can make a HUGE difference.
btw, a federation kuriki can last you well into 40+ till you can switch it out for a bone knife +1
I think I'll go dual knives. Having +3 dex on mithran scimitar is nice and all (I can get 471 damage on a sa+ta+fb and I'm a freaking taru O_o) but the delay is killing me!
I activate my macro and.... sit there... and sit there.... and the mob goes after the whm and then I decide to attack it in the front.... cause it moved and turned and did a sommersault, and gave me the middle finger during the whole time I was sitting there. I am seriously thinking of switching to /war or /sam just cause of the delay on dual wield thing is really making me mad.

Just reached level 35 over the weekend. Here's my gear:
Main Dagger: Federation Kukri (great since Bastok is sucking)
Alt Dagger: Federation Knife
Ranged: Long Boomerang
Head: Mrc. Capt. Headgear
Neck: Spike Necklace
Earrings: 2 Drone Earrings
Gloves: Hume RSE :)
Body: Mrc. Capt. Doublet
Rings: +2 dex and +2 str
Back: Nomad Mantle
Belt: Mrc. Capt. Belt
Legs: Mrc. Capt. Pants
Feet: Ryl. Ftm. Boots (lvl20, same as Mrc. Capt)
Is there anything I should look to replace here? I plan on replacing the +2 str ring with another +2 dex ring. Anything better for the back? What level is Bastokan Subligar? I would love Leaping Boots or equivalent but would rather not shell out the money and you can forget me fighting that overcamped mob.
