If Square Enix made North American only or Japanese only servers and gave you the option to move to it would you?

No. That would defeat a big purpose of the game: For many different cultures to come together and accomplish things.

but they don't really come together...
if that was squares real intent i'd think they'd make an easier or more effective translater

To be completely honest I enjoy the diversity (no pun intended) and nice blend of NA and Japanese gamers. I get to play with loads of Europeans, Australians, and American gamers, but never Japanese gamers. So I am really enjoying this.
Unless it's a choice between performance and creating new servers, then I really would not migrate.

they come together at times and at times they don't
i've played with a few people that we couldn't understand each other but we helped each other out alot
then you got the jerks who are always saying "na players are idiots" that kinda ruin the uninity and the easy sence of getting along. if i said somone on the game was a idiot everytime they did somthing non perfectly i would be calling people from every culture a idiot and spend all my time in game calling them that.

If I has the option, I would. Generally when I'm searching for poeple to party with, most of the poelpe who have Japanese characters in their comment have "I don't speak English" or "Sorry Japanese Only" Others say, sorry I don't sepak enlish, when I send them a tell. Only twice have I partied with people whom I know were japanese, and both went more or less well. Nothing special, and certainly not the best parties I've been in.
There was an especially nice Japanese person who took myself and two others through Gugsen mines looking for ghouls, so I am grateful for that. Beyond those examples, it seems as though there are two societies within the world, each hessitant to say the least to ineract with one another. Sqareenix's plan for creating a melting pot has turned into a marble cake. I feel like I'm in fifth grade again, where the boys won't talk to the girls and the girls won't talk to the boys.

that's exactly my point and the reason for the post...
lately i've been seeing more "asshole" japs than i have NA players.... plus NA have a harder time trying to find parties cause japanese players had there servers for over a year and theres not as many well established NA players....
but of course if you asked the japs that they'd just say it's cause we're stupid

really please stop using the term japs.
Byut if you cannot speak japanese how do you know what they are calling you?
there are idiots on both nations. however the good japanese players and good import players outweigh bad the bad ones.
there are a lot of importers on these forums who cant stand NA players and they are the ones calling you idiots. I have yet to see a japnese post here calling you an idiot. EVen on japanese BBS boards I go to they talk about NA players but dont call them idiots.
They say things like you are to carefree:meaning you seem to be very individuallistic and not much teamwork involved.
This will change as you get better but face it we DO coem from different cultures even if we are both human. and IT does make a difference ask any anthropologist about the differences just in southern and norhtern africa.
The best thing to do Is play enjoy your time learn to be patient with each other the game is new here and the jpn will learn and so will you.
please enjoy ffxi and make the most of it.
ignore idiot importers and ignore idiot jp players. focus on growing and improving your skills to help your PT/Alliane.

You know what I am sick of this "get me away from the japanese" crap, that is so races, and I dont care if you really are or not that is not the argument, but I love playing with other people, and I have to admit there are some Japanese that are a little on the rude side but that is because they are frustrated with us US players, going in there and bugging them right from the start, well not all of us do that but I have seen alot that do, and the bad lack of RPing is sad as well......but nothing I could do about that :(
all I am saying is if you dont like it fine! but stop waisting space posting about it, move if you want and other will follow, but keep it to yourself!

I'd move.
Maybe not a strict "NA ONLY" or "JP ONLY" server, but I'd be for something like a "Official NA" servers, where it's generally acknowledged that the server is for NA players. JP would be welcome, but they would be aware the fact that it was a predominantly NA server. Likewise, vice a versa with "Offical JP" servers, etc.
Quoting something I heard on this topic: I play this game for enjoyment, not a lesson in cross-cultural interaction.
Besides, it seems something like 90% of the JPs on my server refuse to interact in any meaningful sense with the NAs.

I have yet to meet a single rude JP player. They go to the limits of their patience to avoid being seen as rude. In a way, turning someone away from a PT because they are American is the polite thing to do, because it would be unheardof for a JP party to kick someone after the fighting's already started. They're avoiding a potentially bad situation just in case, you know, they invite you but it turns out the communication barrier is too great or you're just bad at playing the game.
At least most JP that I have encountered have the decency to express in English (either through tells or in their Search profile) that they only want to group with Japanese. I doubt I would have an easy time finding a xenophobic NA player who doesn't want to group with Japanese and can say "I only want to group with English speakers" in Japanese.
And what I really can't believe are the people who will go into a party that's partly JP and speak the worst form of English this side of the AOL chats. "hwo long til ur go upa lvel?" is not something that I expect any non-native speaker to be able to decipher; hell, I can barely read it myself.

I wouldn't. I enjoy the diversity and I have yet to find a Japanese player who doesn't know what to do in a party. Earlier I partied with a Japanese who probably didn't understand a word of English. It went surprisingly well because he knew what to do in his role.

Uhm its right that partys and players are very seperated at the lower levels but after level 40 almost every party is mixed with J and E players and everyone get along very well so why should they split the servers? just get higher und you will se what i mean.
Dreakon
01-01-2004, 10:33 AM
I don't want to sound racist but from what I have heard the JP players obviously want nothing to do with the NA players.
Perhaps seperate servers is a good solution. Maybe a choice of whether you want to be on the NA server, JP server or a mixed server would work. Then those that want to mix themselves can, and those who don't want anything to do with the other race can group and not be bothered. That would lower much of the belly-aching on forums and in game and would not effect anyone the slightest.
It's too bad it might come to that though.
EDIT: I personally don't mind playing online with any race, but it seems many JP players refuse to give any NA players attention, no matter how intellegent the NA player seems. I am saying this completely based on what I have heard, not experienced since I am only level 5 so far.....
If any of you have done an advanced job quest like ninja or dragoon with the help of a high level japanese player, you would understand why you wouldnt what to change servers.

The only way I'd switch would be if they made servers located within North America...and even then, I'd probably only switch if there was something on the east coast. Well, no, I'd definitely switch if they made servers on the east coast, but I would probably not switch if they made servers on the west coast.
Oh, and I'm fairly certain (or at least, I really hope) that mithrankitty was being sarcastic in order to be funny/make a joke or whatever.

There are rude Japanese players all the time... I'm sick of everyone saying "oooo the japanese are so nice" and "If you have the slightest dislike of playing with japanese people you are a RACIST!!!"
lets try not to be labeling people as racist, if you have to use the word "racist" to make your point, then you're pretty much ignorant. These people saying they'd rather play with people of all the same language is "Linguistist" if anything...
I've invited japanese people to join a party, and it seems like the only english they know is "I PT Japanese Only" then a bunch of japanese text, which is probbaly japanese for "stupid horse piss american asshole eat shit and die"
Now, that's only a few... For the most part, Japanese players are no different than NA players. That's right, I said it, We both have our good and our bad.
I'm just a little confused, with the people praising the Japanese people as being the most pure honest and trusting angels, and labeling the NA people as being worthless ghetto trash racists.... and anyone who disagrees with them must therefore be a racist.

No. I've come across nice Japanese, I've come across newbie/rude Japanese - but the same goes for NA players. I'm grateful for any help I get, be it Japanese or NA or European. I do get a lot of help from Japanese players though, recent examples: M-9 and Dragoon quest, and they were -really- nice people, too. Without Japanese players, I would have died about 20 times more than I have. Got help from NA players as well, but why ditch the Japanese when you can have both, American AND Japanese acquaintances? ^_^
I also enjoy the diversity and cultural differences, I can learn a lot about the Japanese culture via the game.

I think it's fair to say that nearly every Japanese person is more familiar with English than nearly every American person is familiar with Japanese. Go to Japan, and you see Roman characters everywhere. In FFXI, your character name must be Roman, not katakana. The Japanese client can type Roman characters, but the English client can't type Japanese characters. etc. I would be happy to put little notes to JP players in my search comment, if I had even the slightest passing familiarity with the language in my every day life.
I find the "JP only" search comments extremely rude. I have to deal with the language barrier, why should you be immune simply because your country got the game a year earlier? I am infuriated by the Japanese practice of insisting that they are being super-polite (and in fact, are, by their interpretation), when in fact I find them to be anything but polite. In my eyes, polite would be to accept the group invitation and stay for a little while even if everyone is incompetent and you can't communicate. That's what I do when I'm invited to a JP party, regardless of whether we're getting mad exp or futzing around doing nothing (yes, it's happened).
I've partied with people from Spain, Italy, Germany, and probably many other countries I wasn't aware of. They seem a little "weird" to me because they talk a little "differently", but we get along fine and have a blast.
And at the end of the day, I'd rather play with people who can speak English, simply because I'm here to have fun, and it's easier to have fun with people I can communicate with. What frustrates me most is that there are so many different servers, and there are a lot of English-speaking players I can't play with. When I'm lv 40 and looking deperately for a party, it doesn't help that I'm a second-pick for Japanese parties. And if I do get invited to a JP party, I feel like an outsider because I can't communicate with them at all, outside of simple game talk needed to do my job in a party.
It saddens me that there will never be separate language servers.

Alot of people are making comments on how, jp players are taking so much time to learn a lil english so they can communicate and what not, but like alexander said, jp culture has more english refrences in it then na culture has jp. i really don't wanna feel like learning another laungauge to communicate and donno if others do either? is it ignorant of me to make no effort at all to want to learn another laungauge? maybe, i don't really care. People make comments saying when i have a jp player help me get a advanced job that i'll have a differant point of view? no i won't i'd gladly help anyone else with a advanced job if it was in my power to do so, once i've been playing longer and not think twice about it.
i think it'd be a nice option that you could choose, promently na server promently jp server or pure anyone server, you can choose whichever you want so whatever your views on the subject you can go the way you want to? i mean really wheres the harm in that
Hadoken
01-04-2004, 06:49 PM
The harm in that is that when people "can" do a thing, that carries the implication that they "must" do the thing. If there were JP-recommended servers and EN-recommended servers, people on those servers would get the idea that everyone on their server "must" speak the language of the server. Likewise, the in-between servers which are bilingual would get the idea that you "must" be willing to party with people of both languages.
Anyone who stayed on a bilingual server but turned away a potential party member with "JP only" at any time, for whatever reason, would be thought to be very rude for breaking the implied (but very much imaginary) rules of the server. Someone on an EN server who used Japanese at any time, for whatever reason, would probably get yelled at for breaking another imaginary set of implied rules.

Actually having a server labl;ed as the "English" server would be somehtign I would not mind moving to.
As for the language barrier, its not as much the language, which If it used letters that stand for sounds, instead of symbols which I have a hard time telling apart. For instance its easy for someone who uses english to over time figure out spanish or french, since we can actually read it. The japanse writting system isnt like that, those many symbols I have never seen before, nor can I identify, present quite a challenge to most(99% or more) westerners.
Because of this, I am quite glad that most japanse know enough enlish to say "I dont speak english, sorry." I know I cant do the same, closest I come is using the universal translator.
Now, if this game would be to convert the japanse spoken language into our sound based letter system, instead of displaying the random symbols I see, then maybee we could figure out and start to form japanse words. What i mean by this is words like
hai = yes
arigato = thank you
gomen nasai = I'm sorry
iie = no
eigo = English language
doko? = where
BAKA = Idiot
You get the point.
You can find more of these at "http://japanvisitor.com/jc/jl.html" Pretty helpful because I think the JP players understand it to.
Summary:
I cant read symbols.
I can read letters.
I would move to a majority english server.

I'd be all up for it, it's a serious pain in the ass to get a group together. Sure, when the right people are on in the Linkshell, there is no problem since we got the right classes to do the right things.
But sitting around in Jeuno looking for a party is not what I like to do with my time. Sure, it might just be my class (not really since as a backup damage dealer, I am needed), but that is really just a myth and overall ignorance of what a Dark Knight has to offer.
1-30 is easy, 30-40 presents challenges. 40 so far is a bitch, but like I said, good thing my linkshell has competent and skilled players around our level.
So in the end, NA server.... YES PLEASE!

i know i'm a little late in this, since the reply i am posting has to do with stuff on the first page, but here goes
i am an NA player, and i was in selbina for something, when i get a tell from a jp player asking me to join his party in jeuno. i tell him i am far away and i'm sorry, but he says that time is no problem. (i was around level 21 thf/10 war i think at that time) so i run/ride a chocobo the way up, and i have to tell you, it was the best party i have ever been in. the guy already had the perfect party planned, and when i got there we set out for quifim. even though we rarely talked because of the language barrier, it was as if we all understood each other. we all knew our jobs, and performed them well. we chained our ws just by knowledge of how they chained. it was great. i was out there all day with them. yeah, thats all i have to say.

yes, sadly this and another time were the only times i have successfully partied with jp players. the other time was when i needed my key from palborough mines, and i was running around all alone with no one to help me. i happened upon 3 people running through, so i followed them and one spoke english and japanese, while the others were all very high levels and did not speak english, but they took me into their party and helped me find the key even though we never really talked to each other. so overall i have had good experiences with jp parties, except that most jp dont invite me just because it has an "E" next to my name when you search. oh well.
Alexander
01-06-2004, 11:53 PM
Sure, I have successfully partied with JP players. But --
1) There was very little non-game-related communication (obviously); the party was efficient, but I might have well as been playing with good AI players. The point of an online game is communication and community building.
2) Getting parties with JP players regularly, especially at higher levels, is rare. They will almost always pick someone who speaks JP over you.
In my opinion, there is a serious flaw with this game's design with regard to higher level parties. There are 30+ servers, but only a handful of people on each server in your level range once you hit 35+. This flaw is exacerbated by the language barrier Square elected to force upon us.

It was a hypothetical question and to respond to your number 2 that's very well not true...
Kyolii
01-09-2004, 05:23 PM
I think the opinion that all Japanese players (or at least most) are rude or otherwise intentionally unpleasant to NA players can be explained like this:
There's just as many rude Japanese players as American players. Because there's just as many rude Japanese people as Americans, that's just life. The problem is, the language barrier exasperates this situation. A rude Japanese player is seen as far more rude than he might intend, and a polite Japanese player (or just a regular, average joe player) is unable to communicate politely. So for every concerned, kind-hearted American player you can depend on at least one equally concerned Japanese player who may not be able to communicate his desire to assist you because of the language barrier.
Some Japanese players may not bother being polite to NA players because they simply haven't the ability to communicate to us reliably. And Americans are renown for being short-tempered when it comes to non-English speaking people.
Additionally, many Japanese gamers might be of the opinion that American gamers are lazy or "soft" because we don't dedicate the same amount of time or attention to our games. This is true, to a degree. But it might not be our fault, considering our RPGs, after being filtered through a Japanese RPG company with the same opinion, are not remotely as difficult as they were originally intended to be. Ever played the imported translated version of Final Fantasy 2 (or 4, whatever) on the SNES? It's impossible in comparison. Squaresoft went on record at the time saying they felt the game was too hard for American players.
Anyway, I think it's a mistake for Japanese players to underestimate us Yanks, but I can understand where they get their opinions from, if they do indeed feel that way. Remember, if you really want to play effectively with Japanese players, you've got to set up a number of autotranslate macros for things you'll say often: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/dictionary/

Maybe it would be best to have own servers for Japanese and American players. But then European and American players should play on the same servers.
We don`t understand what the Japanese says anyway.
when i played with my friend we met many japanese, australian and such who spoke english.
Ha ha, Australian speaking English, strange...:p
When i first started reading this thread, i was getting really angery and realy wanted to speak my mind, but by the time i finished i noticed most of what i wanted to say had already been added to the thread. That being said, I beleive form MY expeiances that the JP players are very nice, but do have a tendonsy to want to party with other JP. I mean really...if you want to do some serious lvl'n then you need a good party. Well to have a good party you need the right players. If you already have a palidin, whm, blm, theif, and ranger, and there is a DRK and a BST that want in the party. Who do you choose? Of course, the DRk because he is a better damage dealer, so he would be better for the party. Same thing for choosing a DRK that is english or JP. It would be EASIER to lvl if you choose the one that spoke the same launguage as the rest of the party. And what happens to the BST?? Does he go off crying that the party was rude racist (or like classist or sumthin) because they chose the DRK?? No, he jus looks for a party that wants a BST. And on top of it would you want to be in a party that is uneasy around you? What i mean is its better they say no, then be "polite" and say yes unwillingly.
I have actually jus started a chara that is lvl 16 now, and i have only had japanese parties. I dont look for Jp parties, i jus happen into them. I have never had a problem with any of them.it might help that i know a little japanese myself, but still. if you want to seriously lvl then you dont need more than the translator (which could be alot better) to at least lvl with them. well im tired of listening to your guys stupidity so dont expect me to post again...

I would definitely switch if they made servers located in the US. I hate the lag I encounter with everything I do (/heal, for one). Not to mention, when they implement PvP we will be at a severe disadvantage, and already are when it comes to agroing NMs - 4 second delay doesn't help much.

1. JP (japanese players) never invite NA unless your some sort of mage then they don't care about language barrier.
2. In all my time playing i've got 3 invites from JP's and as soon as they found out i was english they came up with a BS story about how they were full (even when standing next to them seeing 5 members)
3. There is less than 8 mages on around my level at all times of day, Black mage has become an exclusive luxury now, I almost never have them in parties because they simply aren't around.
4. Some JP's that i have partied with some were nice, most we're rude like bailing without reason when the party was clicking on all cylinders.
5. From what i've gathered high level JP's 70-75 do help people alot because they don't have nothing else to do or accomplish so this might be their highlight of the day.
6. sometimes LS mates around my level will sit there with flags up for hours at a time (longest i've seen was 8 hours with flag up)
7. Theres still some boneheaded stuff players do at my level.
8. people still leave when they level (this will absolutly kill a party at my level, you need 6 at all times. If you have to leave atleast let people know to find a replacement)
9. NA players with the ability to speak japanese have the biggest advantage in the game hands down.
Basically what this says is its a whole new ballgame after level 40.
Some of the JP's i've partied with were very nice and i noticed they tend to share as a family when in a party but more of them have been rude than nice, so if they did ever come up with a server with mostly NA i'd move in a heartbeat because its not NA who has problems with the language barrier its the JP

Really? I'm tired of all the JPN-NA crap that goes on, some of my best friends (IRL) are Asian. That's beside the point though...take how many NA games speak Japanese, and compare that to the Japanese that speak English. On Fairy, there are alot of Japanese that speak English than the other way around. Other than that, I agree with most of the things.

Maybe communication should be strictly limited to the usage of the auto-translator.
That way no one know who's JP, NA. Everyone will group with everyone. Problem solved.
lol...just kidding =P

I can't speak for how it is on other servers but only from my experiences on carbuncle but what i say is 100% true, I've only seen my whm/blm/rdm friends get invited to JP parties. Mages are so rare around level 50 that i guess they don't have much choice, I've never seen a JP invite an NA player that i know who wasent some kind of mage.
This game favors mages BIG time because of that, every non mage friend i have will go ridiculous amounts of time during JP primetime hours with seek up and a mage will wait 5 maybe 10 mins and be invited to a full JP party.
Some tendicies i've seen with JP is that
1. They all leave at the same time, if one goes they all go.
2. Most of them will synth items during downtime
3. Always has food on them
4. Will carry 3 to 4 different weapons on them
5. Don't care about skill chains unless a BLM is present.

I know you guys are worrying about language problems ect, but soon europeans will begin playing with greater numbers than before, i know many european nations can speak good english (belguim, netherlands ect), but there are many countries that cant, so soon youll be having more communication problems. But i woudnt worry about that, ive played many online games and a great thing about it is making friends from other cultures and learning from them. If we seperate nations from playing online we may aswell forget playing FF Online and go back to the singl player Final Fantasys. We can all make some effort to speak other languages.
Cheers :D
